INTRODUCTION
Yoshi: おはよう、サイパン。ヨシです。(Ohayō, Saipan. Yoshi desu.)
Take: おはよう、サイパン。タケです。(Ohayō, Saipan. Take desu.)
Peter: Peter here. Beginner lesson #97. He guys are back again. Take-san. 昨日、本当にすいませんでした。(Kinō, hontō ni suimasen deshita.)
Take: まあ、許してあげるよ。(Mā, yurushite ageru yo.)
Peter: ありがとうございます。(Arigatō gozaimasu.) Yes, for those of you who missed yesterday, we threw Take-san out in the middle of the lesson. So we felt a little bad, a little, not too much but just a little bit bad about that.
Take: 今日は来るのやめようかなぁ、と思ったんですけど。(Kyō wa kuru no yameyō ka nā, to omotta n desu kedo.)
Peter: We are very, very happy that you made it. All right, now today, what we are going to do is work on please don’t. Now in previous lessons, we learned how to ask please do something for me, of course. Now in this lesson, we are going to learn how to say please don’t. Now this is a really important grammar point and we are going to take today to look at it. So again inside the conversation, this will come up a few times. Listen to the conversation, take it in. Now this conversation is actually a continuation of Going To Tokyo To Meet a Friend and then we had a meeting at Ueno park and then decided to go to Sushi. This is the continuation. So our hero has returned home and met his friend who went to Yokohama to have an interview. So let’s see what happens with this story. Again this will continue on and on. This will be the new Thursday drama. Here we go.

POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Peter: That was so depressing. Let’s ask Take-san how we did that?
Yoshi: タケさん、これ、どうしてしまったんでしょうか。(Take-san, kore, dō shite shimatta n deshō ka.)
Take: まあ人生生きてると色々ありますからね…。(Mā jinsei ikite ru to iroiro arimasu kara ne…)
Peter: Let’s get him out of here today like yesterday we had to politely – we felt bad about getting him out. Today, you are out of here.
Take: 晴れの日もあれば雨の日もあるってことですよ。はっはっは。(Hare no hi mo areba ame no hi mo aru tte koto desu yo. Ha, ha, ha.)
Peter: Do something, Yoshi. There we go.
Yoshi: 困りましたね。何が起きたんですかね。(Komarimashita ne. Nani ga okita n desu ka ne.)
Peter: I don’t know. We are going to find out. Now this drama is heating up.
Take: いや、僕もよくわかんないんですけどね。(Iya, boku mo yoku wakannai n desu kedo ne.)
Peter: But you have to admit the girl, remember the girl with the dog? I don’t know. Well let’s find out what happens and we will get her side of the story. All right, for now today we are happily going to ask you to leave. 帰ってください。(Kaette kudasai.)
Take: また言われちゃったよ。(Mata iwarechatta yo.)
Peter: でも、今日理由があります。(Demo, kyō riyū ga arimasu.)
Take: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.)
Peter: 悲しすぎるでしょう。(Kanashisugiru deshō.)
Take: 悲しすぎますね。まぁ、全ては明日わかるということですね。(Kanashisugimasu ne. Mā, subete wa ashita wakaru to iu koto desu ne.)
Peter: Out! Okay, into vocab. All right, Yoshi-san, guess who is joining us for vocab today.
Yoshi: Yes, I know the pretty Madonna.
Peter: There it is pretty Madonna. I think she is better than everyone.
Takase: 頑張ります。(Ganbarimasu.)
Yoshi: 頑張ってください。(Ganbatte kudasai.)
Takase: はい。(Hai.)
Peter: Yes, let’s give a little background to the listeners. Yes, the studio was quite hot and we’ve been in here for hours and someone has just arrived within the first 1 minute. Let’s just give – Yoshi-san, can you do your best to mimic that person?
Yoshi: 暑い。もうやだ。帰りたい。(Atsui. Mō yada. Kaeritai.)
Takase: Exactly.
Peter: Well we are going to do our best to get you out of this studio very quickly much to the dismay of our listeners but anyway because the pretty Madonna would like to leave, let’s just get these vocab done and get out of here. And you are lucky because today just two vocabulary words.
Takase: やった~!(Yattā!)
Peter: Oh my god! Yoshi, can you believe this reaction!?
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Peter: All right, then, here we go. First word
Takase: 説明 (setsumei)
Peter: Explanation.
Takase: (slow)せつめい (setsumei) (natural speed) 説明 (setsumei)
Peter: Now Takase-san, how do we turn this into a verb?
Takase: 説明する (setsumei suru)
Peter: Yes, we add する (suru). Thank you very much and how about an example sentence if I am not asking too much?
Takase: この問題を説明してください。(Kono mondai o setsumei shite kudasai.)
Peter: Please explain this problem. Here, we are going to do a little conversation and we are going to exploit Takase-san's wonderful talents. Yoshi-san and Takase-san have a date and Yoshi-san showed up 1 minute late, just one. So let’s take it from there.
Yoshi: あ、ごめんなさい。遅れました。(A, gomen nasai. Okuremashita.)
Takase: なんで遅れましたか。(Nande okuremashita ka.)
Yoshi: ちょっと、用事があって。(Chotto, yōji ga atte.)
Takase: 用事?説明してください。(Yōji? Setsumei shite kudasai.)
Yoshi: もう一度お願いします。ゆっくり、お願いします。ごめんなさい、遅れました。(Mō ichi-do onegai shimasu. Yukkuri, onegai shimasu. Gomen nasai, okuremashita.)
Peter: I am sorry, I am late.
Takase: なんで遅れましたか。(Nande okuremashita ka.)
Peter: Why were you late?
Yoshi: ちょっと、用事があって。(Chotto, yōji ga atte.)
Peter: I had some business to attend to.
Takase: 用事?(Yōji?)
Peter: Business?
Takase: 説明してください。(Setsumei shite kudasai.)
Peter: Please explain. You are in trouble. I’d like to see the continuation of this dialogue. It is pretty good.
Takase: Umm, I liked it.
Yoshi: Now I am scared.
Peter: All right, the next vocabulary word.
Takase: 次のキーワードは (Tsugi no kīwādo wa)
Yoshi: 一応 (ichiō)
Peter: Wants, tentative, at least.
Yoshi: (slow)いちおう (ichiō) (natural speed) 一応 (ichiō)
タカセさん、今日の試験は大丈夫ですか。(Takase-san, kyō no shiken wa daijōbu desu ka.)
Takase: 一応、勉強しました。(Ichiō, benkyō shimashita.)
Peter: もう一度、お願いします。(Mō ichi-do, onegai shimasu.)
Yoshi: タカセさん、今日の試験は大丈夫ですか。(Takase-san, kyō no shiken wa daijōbu desu ka.)
Peter: Ms. Takase, will today’s test be alright?
Takase: 一応、勉強しました。(Ichiō, benkyō shimashita.)
Peter: I have at least studied. So now we want to take a look at a few points in the conversation. First I’d like to look at その顔 (sono kao). Yoshi-san, what does this mean first of all?
Yoshi: That literally means that face.
Peter: Okay, that face. Are you okay?
Yoshi: Yeah, but so the person is looking at the other person’s face and he is not talking about the face but the look.
Peter: On that face.
Yoshi: Yes.
Peter: All right. Now I get your point.
Yoshi: So the person has a really tired face or some kind of expression on the face.
Peter: That lets the other person know that things aren’t alright.
Yoshi: Right.
Peter: Right. I wonder what happened here. We are going to find out next Thursday what exactly happened or at least I heard. That’s what the writer said but we can tell that it wasn’t a good thing, right?
Yoshi: Right.
Peter: Now there is another line I’d like to look at. That line is, Takase-san?
Takase: うん、一応。(Un, ichiō.)
Peter: Oh, I met her! Yeah, let’s take a look at this line, Oh I met her and before that we had
Yoshi: ネット友達に会いましたか。(Netto tomodachi ni aimashita ka.)
Peter: Did you meet your internet friend and then we had after that, Takase-san?
Takase: うん、一応。(Un, ichiō.)
Peter: Ah yeah, I met her but the nuance here is I could at least meet her or I met her but something happened. So what this 一応 (ichiō) is pointing at is I met her but that’s pretty much it. There wasn’t much after that and Yoshi-san, based on the response, do you think it’s a good thing or a bad thing?
Yoshi: I don’t think it’s a good thing.
Peter: Yeah, there is usually a nuance of not enough.
Yoshi: So the person must be not satisfied or it wasn’t very exciting.
Peter: Exactly. I think satisfaction is the key here. Let’s give another example. We will make Yoshi-san the part time worker and Takase-san the boss and Yoshi-san just finished washing the floor. Here we go.
Yoshi: 終わりました。(Owarimashita.)
Takase: 全部終わったんですか。(Zenbu owatta n desu ka.)
Yoshi: はい、一応。(Hai, ichiō.)
Takase: 何、この汚れ。もう一回洗って。(Nani, kono yogore. Mō ikkai aratte.)
Peter: もう一度、お願いします。ゆっくり、お願いします。(Mō ichi-do, onegai shimasu. Yukkuri, onegai shimasu.)
Yoshi: 終わりました。(Owarimashita.)
Peter: I am finished.
Takase: 全部終わったんですか。(Zenbu owatta n desu ka.)
Peter: Did you finish it all?
Yoshi: はい、一応。(Hai, ichiō.)
Peter: Yeah, kind of.
Takase: 何、この汚れ。(Nani, kono yogore.)
Peter: What’s this filth?
Takase: もう一回洗って。(Mō ikkai aratte.)
Peter: Wash it again. We can see by Yoshi’s, one more time.
Yoshi: はい、一応…。(Hai, ichiō…)
Peter: So he did it but maybe not to the level of expectation. So there is something missing and that’s kind of when you use this. You’ve done it but maybe not to the best of your ability or you met someone in the dialogue’s case but it wasn’t up to expectations. So this is kind of a phrase you would use.

Lesson focus

Peter: Okay, on to today’s grammar point. Yoshi-san, what’s today’s grammar point?
Yoshi: Today’s grammar point introduces the ないでください (naide kudasai) construction.
Peter: Exactly and this construction is similar to
Yoshi: てください (te kudasai)
Peter: But it is used to request that something not be done. Now the way we form this is the plain negative form of the verb plus
Yoshi: でください (de kudasai)
Peter: Okay, now next week, we will be going over the plain negative form of class 2 and 3 verbs but today we want to go over the construction of the plain negative form of class 1 verbs. Now if you remember, class 1 verbs include such verbs as
Yoshi: 会う (au)
Peter: To meet.
Yoshi: 行く (iku)
Peter: To go. Now the way we form the plain negative for class 1 verbs is in the plain form, each one ends in a う (u) syllable. For example, we have the verb to meet.
Yoshi: 会う (au)
Peter: Ending in the う (u) and we had 行く(iku) ending in
Yoshi: く (ku)
Peter: Now what we do here is we go from the う (u) column to the
Yoshi: あ (a) column.
Peter: So for example, let’s take the verb 行く (iku)
Yoshi: 行か (ika)
Peter: We go from
Yoshi: く (ku)
Peter: To
Yoshi: か (ka)
Peter: And then we attach.
Yoshi: ない (nai). 行かない (ikanai).
Peter: How about the verb to swim?
Yoshi: 泳ぐ (oyogu)
Peter: Ending in
Yoshi: ぐ (gu)
Peter: We jump back to
Yoshi: が (ga)
Peter: Add
Yoshi: ない (nai)
Peter: And we have
Yoshi: 泳がない (oyoganai)
Peter: Okay, let’s get another example in there. Takase-san, what’s the verb to drink?
Takase: 飲む (nomu)
Peter: The final syllable being
Takase: む (mu)
Peter: We jump back to
Takase: ま (ma)
Peter: Add
Takase: ない (nai)
Peter: And we have
Takase: 飲まない (nomanai)
Peter: Okay, plain negative form. Now there is one huge, huge, huge exception and you got to watch out for this one. All class 1 verbs that end in
Yoshi: う (u)
Peter: We don’t jump back to the あ (a) column for them. What do we do? The う (u) gets dropped and we replace it with
Yoshi: わ (wa)
Peter: Then we add.
Yoshi: ない (nai)
Peter: So the verb to meet which is
Yoshi: 会う (au)
Peter: Becomes
Yoshi: 会わない (awanai)
Peter: All right. And once we have this, to form the ないで (naide) construction which we were talking about, we just attach
Yoshi: でください (de kudasai)
Peter: To the plain negative and we have, please don’t. Now we may need this one for Takase-san sometimes. What’s the – let’s run through the whole conjugation. What’s the verb to speak?
Yoshi: 話す (hanasu)
Peter: What’s the plain negative of this verb?
Yoshi: 話さない (hanasanai)
Peter: And what’s please don’t speak?
Yoshi: 話さないでください (hanasanaide kudasai)
Peter: There it is. How about please speak?
Yoshi: 話してください (hanashite kudasai)
Peter: Okay. So let’s give you a little example. Okay, here we go.
Takase: ヨシさん、その顔、どうしたんですか。(Yoshi-san, sono kao, dō shita n desu ka.)
Yoshi: 聞かないでください。(Kikanaide kudasai.)
Takase: 話してください。(Hanashite kudasai.)
Yoshi: 生まれつきです。(Umaretsuki desu.)
Peter: All right. We are going to end it there. Takase is laughing too hard. Takase, can you laugh into the mike? There you go, you hear those strange sounds. That’s Takase.
Takase: Ahahah...

Outro

Peter: Well anyway, if you want that last word, stop by japanesepod101.com and pick it up. Again, stop by, get the PDF, stop by the learning center and maybe we will even put a clip of Takase laughing. There we go.
Takase: It’s okay.
Peter: All right. That’s going to do for today.
Yoshi: またね。(Mata ne.)
Peter: Takase-san. Would you like to say goodbye to everybody?
Takase: また明日。(Mata ashita.)
Peter: All right, see you tomorrow.
