POST CONVERSATION BANTER
(Fujisawa-san), you are too cruel.
Natsuko: What a girl!
Peter: What a girl! But you made it look so easy, Natsuko.
Natsuko: Oh really.
Peter: Either you are a good actor or it comes natural.
Natsuko: Well I am not so picky.
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Peter: Okay, let’s get into today’s vocab and yes, our vocab guest. Natsuko-san, who is our vocab guest for the day?
(Kyō no gesuto wa, Yoshi-san desu.)
(Kon’nichiwa.)
(Kon’nichiwa.)
(Kon’nichiwa.)
(Yoroshiku onegai shimasu.)
(Kochira koso, yoroshiku onegai shimasu.)
(Kochira koso, yoroshiku onegai shimasu.) Yoshi, great to see you here. Natsuko, how unusual for you to be with us from the beginning?
Natsuko: Oh yes. Sometimes I will do my part.
Peter: Now I’d like to meet (Fujisawa-san).
Natsuko: Oh, are you sure?
Peter: I think so. Something about her.
Natsuko: What?
Peter: I don’t know. Yoshi.
Yoshi: Umm, I don’t think I am good enough to meet her.
Peter: All right. Lots of vocab. So let’s get right in. First word, Natsuko. (Onegai shimasu.)
Natsuko: 年収 (nenshū)
Peter: Annual salary, annual income.
Peter: Now Natsuko, what other two characters that make up this word?
Natsuko: 年 (nen)
Peter: Year.
Natsuko: 収 (shū)
Peter: Something coming in. So the thing that comes in yearly is your annual salary. Okay, what are some other words associated with these characters?
Natsuko: 収入 (shūnyū)
Peter: Income, and Yoshi.
Yoshi: 月収 (gesshū)
Peter: Ah, you will hear this one a lot.
(Mō ichi-do onegai shimasu.)
Natsuko: 月収 (gesshū)
Peter: Monthly salary. Natsuko-san, let’s ask Yoshi-san his monthly salary.
(Yoshi-san, gesshū wa o-ikura desu ka.)
(Ā, kanben shite kudasai.)
Peter: Yes umm, how much is your monthly income? Is this kind of…
Natsuko: I don’t think that’s a really polite question.
Peter: I ask it all the time.
Natsuko: Really?
Peter: Right, after “How are you?” That’s why I think I should meet (Fujisawa-san) because we would get along very well, very direct.
Natsuko: Now I know. Yeah, I am sure.
Peter: And what did you just say in Japanese?
(Kanben shite kudasai.)
Peter: And what does this mean?
Yoshi: Please leave me alone.
Peter: Oh yes, but it’s a very polite way to not – it has that nuance to it but it’s more of I would like to refrain from answering. You are like, please let’s change the topic. It’s got a very polite tone to it, right?
Natsuko: Yes.
Yoshi: はい。(Hai.)
Peter: It’s not like get lost. Oh, that was good. Recently someone asked about us bringing a video camera into the studio to film to see what it looks like. I think we really should have Yoshi’s face.
Natsuko: Yes. (Kanben shite kudasai.)
Peter: The many faces of Yoshi. Ah okay, next.
Natsuko: 貯金 (chokin)
Peter: Savings.
Peter: Okay, let’s ask Yoshi about his – all right.
(Kanben shite kudasāi.)
Peter: I am sorry, Yoshi. Natsuko, she is – you like that, right Natsuko?
Natsuko: I knew you were going to say that.
Peter: Oh, you’ve been in the studio too long with me.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: Now Natsuko, what are the two characters in this word?
Natsuko: 貯 (cho)
Peter: Which means
Natsuko: To store.
Peter: To store. And what are we going to store for savings. Think about it. Next character.
Natsuko: 金 (kin)
Peter: Money. Storing money equals savings. So this is how the Chinese characters, the kanji work. They represent meanings, you combine them together, get a compound, store money, savings. Again this is where it’s very easy to say tough to do.
Natsuko: Right.
Peter: Next.
Peter: Good looking.
Peter: And this comes from the English word, of course handsome.
Yoshi: Yes.
Peter: Natsuko-san, is there another way we can say this?
Peter: Good looking. So handsome is used for just guys or can it be used for clothing or girls, too.
Natsuko: I think just guys.
Peter: All right, but かっこいい (kakkoii) can be used for
Natsuko: Anything.
Peter: Yes. Next.
(Tsugi wa, shinchō)
Peter: Height.
Peter: Natsuko, how can we ask Yoshi-san how tall he is?
(Yoshi-san, shinchō wa nan-senchi desu ka.)
(Hai, hyaku nana-jussenchi desu.)
Peter: Okay, Natsuko-san, one more time, the question, please.
(Yoshi-san, shinchō wa nan-senchi desu ka.)
Peter: Yoshi, how many centimeters is your height is the direct translation. So instead of saying how tall you are, they ask how many centimeters tall you are. Again centimeters, so for everybody out there in the US, we got to get out the metric system converter. Yes, I just know my height. Okay, and then the answer is, Yoshi-san.
(Hyaku nana-jussenchi desu.)
Peter: 170 centimeters. What’s the word for centimeters?
Yoshi: センチ (senchi)
Peter: Centimeters. Now you are going to have to do some conversions here because it’s all 100. 100 is 1 meter and then after that 70 centimeters. How tall is 170 centimeters?
Yoshi: Umm, I think I am about 5’7.
Peter: Yeah, now Yoshi-san graduated from a US university. So did you have a tough time converting when you went to the US?
Yoshi: Yes. All the time.
Peter: Yeah, but just for you to know that when they are asking how tall you are, how many centimeters tall are you. So you got to know at least your height in centimeters. So before coming to Japan, do some quick calculations or get a quick calculation card somewhere out there. Natsuko, next.
Natsuko: 次は、背 (Tsugi wa, se)
Peter: Height.
Natsuko: 背 (se)
Peter: Yes, it’s just one syllable. The whole word is just one syllable long. One more time, Natsuko.
Natsuko: 背 (se)
Peter: 背 (se), kind of like stomach, which is
Natsuko: 胃 (i)
Peter: You know, these body parts seem to be very easy to say.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: Okay Natsuko, how about how can we say someone is tall?
(Se ga takai. Mō ichi-do onegai shimasu.)
Peter: Height and tall. So your height is tall, you are tall. And what’s the opposite?
Peter: Your height is low. You are short. So there is no direct word for tall and short but it's a description of the height. Height is high, you are tall. Height is low, you are short. All right, next.
(Tsugi wa, fugōkaku)
Peter: Fail, failed exam, rejection. Oh, that hurts.
Natsuko: Oh yes.
Peter: Example, please.
(Yoshi-san, rei o onegai shimasu.)
(Kinō no shiken wa fugōkaku deshita. Natsuko-san, mō ichi-do onegai shimasu.)
(Kinō no shiken wa fugōkaku deshita.)
Peter: I failed yesterday’s exam. Ah, high school days.
Yoshi: Makes me nostalgic.
Peter: A nostalgic feeling.
Natsuko: Makes me depressed.
Peter: Now one of the major, major depressing things out there is getting well, we talked about the college entrance exam. Now Natsuko, how do we say “to fail a college entrance exam”?
(Daigaku nyūshi de fugōkaku ni narimashita. Yoshi-san, mō ichi-do onegai shimasu.)
(Daigaku nyūshi de fugōkaku ni narimashita.)
Peter: Now when this happens, how do they notify you about this? I don’t really want to do this word but we got to do it anyway. Natsuko,
Peter: Yes, now the first part of the word we had already, which is
Natsuko: 不合格 (fugōkaku)
Peter: Yoshi-san, what’s the second part?
Yoshi: 通知 (tsūchi)
Peter: Yes, notification. You don’t want to see that. Now what’s the opposite of “fail”?
Natsuko: 合格 (gōkaku)
Peter: To pass. Now fail is based on the same word as the pass. Just in the front, there is no or not. Not passing, hah but vice versa, if you pass the test, it is. How can we say we passed yesterday’s test?
(Kinō no shiken wa gōkaku deshita.)
Peter: Nice job and pass the entrance exam to college.
(Daigaku nyūshi ni gōkaku shimashita.)
Peter: And what kind of notice will you get?

Outro

Peter: Yes, all right. So that’s going to wrap it up today. Again stop by japanesepod101.com. Leave us a post, check out the forum. Again the learning center and above all, the line by line transcripts. I am going to have fun tonight replaying (Fujisawa-san. Yappari fugōkaku desu.)
(Jā, mata ashita ne.)
Yoshi: またね。(Mata ne.)
