INTRODUCTION
Peter: Okay, without further adieu, let’s get in today's lesson. Here we go.
Jun: おはよう、モントリオール。ジュンです。(Ohayō, Montoriōru. Jun desu.)
Noriko: おはよう、モントリオール。ノリコです。(Ohayō, Montoriōru. Noriko desu.)
Peter: Peter here and we are back with another episode. Back in the studio for the second straight day, we have Jun and Noriko. Now some of you may be wondering what is with all the Canadian cities. Now I think we should address this question to Noriko. Noriko, how come every time you are here, we are doing a Canadian city.
Noriko: We love Canada.
Peter: We love everybody else too, right Noriko?
Noriko: Okay, you are right.
Peter: Oh boy! Jun, help us out here. You want to give a shout out to the country.
Jun: Yeah.
Peter: Go for it.
Jun: Canada!
Peter: Okay, I would personally like to say hello to the rest of the world. Hello rest of the world.
Noriko: I love you, too.
Peter: A little late there Noriko and Jun, you are not even close to trying. Okay, so let’s start out. ジュン、今日元気ですか。(Jun, kyō genki desu ka.)
Jun: はい、元気です。ノリコは?(Hai, genki desu. Noriko wa?)
Noriko: いつも元気ですよ。ピーターは?(Itsumo genki desu yo. Pītā wa?)
Peter: 相変わらず絶好調です。(Aikawarazu zekkōchō desu.) Today we have part 2 of the interview with the world’s oldest woman and this woman is something else. Wait till you see what she has to say today. Here we go.
DIALOGUE
じゅん (Jun) : レポーターのじゅんです。(Repōtā no Jun desu.)
次の質問はストレス解消についてです。(Tsugi no shitsumon wa sutoresu kaishō ni tsuite desu.)
ストレス解消のため、何をしますか。(Sutoresu kaishō no tame, nani o shimasu ka.)
小林: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.)
北岳はとても近いから、私は時々山に登ります。(Kitadake wa totemo chikai kara, watashi wa tokidoki yama ni noborimasu.)
じゅん (Jun) : ハイキングは体にいいですね。(Haikingu wa karada ni ii desu ne.)
小林: 違います。ロッククライミングをします。ハイキングではないです。(Chigaimasu. Rokku kuraimingu o shimasu. Haikingu de wa nai desu.)
じゅん (Jun) : そうですか!すごいですね!(Sō desu ka! Sugoi desu ne!)
小林: すもぐりもします。肺にとてもいいです。いつも真珠を採ります。(Sumoguri mo shimasu. Hai ni totemo ii desu. Itsumo shinju o torimasu.)
じゅん (Jun) : すごいですね。(Sugoi desu ne.)
小林: でも、ときどきタバコを吸います。そして、お酒もたまに飲みます。(Demo, tokidoki tabako o suimasu. Soshite, o-sake mo tama ni nomimasu.)
じゅん (Jun) : たまに、ですか。(Tama ni, desu ka.)
小林: はい、はい。よく飲みます。(Hai, hai. Yoku nomimasu.)
じゅん (Jun) : 小林さんは元気いっぱいですね。(Kobayashi-san wa genki ippai desu ne.)
小林: ありがとうございます。(Arigatō gozaimasu.)
じゅんちゃん、かわいいですね。今から暇ですか。(Jun-chan, kawaii desu ne. Ima kara hima desu ka.)
じゅん (Jun) : こ、困ります・・・(Ko, komarimasu…)
Peter: One more time, slowly.

じゅん (Jun) : 次の質問はストレス解消についてです。(Tsugi no shitsumon wa sutoresu kaishō ni tsuite desu.)
JUN: The next question is about relieving stress.
じゅん (Jun) : ストレス解消のため、何をしますか。(Sutoresu kaishō no tame, nani o shimasu ka.)
JUN: What do you do in order to relieve stress?
小林 (Kobayashi) : そうですね。(Sō desu ne.)
KOBAYASHI: Umm.
小林 (Kobayashi) : 北岳はとても近いから、私は時々山に登ります。(Kitadake wa totemo chikai kara, watashi wa tokidoki yama ni noborimasu.)
KOBAYASHI: Because Kitadake mountain is very close, sometimes I climb the mountain.
じゅん (Jun) : ハイキングは体にいいですね。(Haikingu wa karada ni ii desu ne.)
JUN: Hiking is good for the body.
小林 (Kobayashi) : 違います。(Chigaimasu.)
KOBAYASHI: You’re wrong. It’s different.
小林 (Kobayashi) : ロッククライミングをします。(Rokku kuraimingu o shimasu.)
KOBAYASHI: I rock climb.
小林 (Kobayashi) : ハイキングではないです。 (Haikingu de wa nai desu.)
KOBAYASHI: Not hiking.
じゅん (Jun) : そうですか!(Sō desu ka!)
JUN: Really?
じゅん (Jun) : すごいですね!(Sugoi desu ne!)
JUN: That’s amazing!
小林 (Kobayashi) : 素潜りもします。(Sumoguri mo shimasu.)
KOBAYASHI: I go freediving.
小林 (Kobayashi) : 肺にとてもいいです。(Hai ni totemo ii desu.)
KOBAYASHI: It’s very good for the lungs.
小林 (Kobayashi) : いつも真珠を採ります (Itsumo shinju o torimasu.)
KOBAYASHI: I always get pearls.
じゅん (Jun) : すごいですね。(Sugoi desu ne.)
JUN: That’s amazing!
小林 (Kobayashi) : でも、ときどきタバコを吸います。(Demo, tokidoki tabako o suimasu.) KOBAYASHI: But, sometimes I smoke.
小林 (Kobayashi) : そして、お酒もたまに飲みます。(Soshite, o-sake mo tama ni nomimasu.)
KOBAYASHI: And once in a while, I drink.
じゅん (Jun) : たまに、ですか。(Tama ni, desu ka.)
JUN: Once in a while?
小林 (Kobayashi) : はい、はい。よく飲みます。(Hai, hai. Yoku nomimasu.)
KOBAYASHI: Yeah, yeah… I often drink.
じゅん (Jun) : 小林さんは元気いっぱいですね。(Kobayashi-san wa genki ippai desu ne.)
JUN: Ms. Kobayashi is really lively.
小林 (Kobayashi) : ありがとうございます。(Arigatō gozaimasu.)
KOBAYASHI: Thank you.
小林 (Kobayashi) : じゅんちゃん、かわいいですね。(Jun-chan, kawaii desu ne.)
KOBAYASHI: Jun, you are cute.
小林 (Kobayashi) : 今から暇ですか。(Ima kara hima desu ka.)
KOBAYASHI: Are you free now?
じゅん (Jun) : こ、困ります・・・(Ko, komarimasu…)
JUN: That’s trouble…
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Peter: Okay Noriko, first word.
Noriko: 質問 (shitsumon)
Peter: Question.
Noriko: (slow)しつもん (shitsumon) (natural speed)質問 (shitsumon)
Peter: Noriko, how do we make this into a verb?
Noriko: Add する (suru).
Peter: Just add on する (suru) and we have the question. Also you probably hear this a lot from your Japanese teacher after she is done talking about something.
Jun: 質問ありますか。(Shitsumon arimasu ka.)
Peter: Do you have a question? Jun, what if we have a question?
Jun: はい、あります。(Hai, arimasu.)
Peter: And if we don’t have a question?
Jun: いいえ、ありません。(Iie, arimasen.)
Peter: Okay, next we have.
Jun: ストレス (sutoresu)
Peter: Stress.

Peter: And what’s the word for release?

Peter: Yes, there is a big difference between hiking and our next word, which is

Peter: I watch movies once in a while. Our next adverb of frequency is

Peter: Sometimes.

Lesson focus

Peter: Okay. On to today’s point. What’s today’s point?
Jun: ため (tame)
Peter: Today we are going to work on the construction of ため (tame), which means for as in for you or for something, for purpose. The way we form this construction is the noun plus の (no) plus ため (tame). Okay, in the dialogue, we had.
Noriko: ストレス解消のため (sutoresu kaishō no tame)
Peter: For stress release. Now some popular constructions are, Jun?
Jun: あなたのため (anata no tame)
Peter: For you. Another one.
Noriko: 愛のため (ai no tame)
Peter: For love. Oh you are so romantic, Noriko. Next.
Jun: お金のため (o-kane no tame)
Peter: やっぱりね。(Yappari ne.) For money and the sentence follows but we just wanted to give you a little bit of an example.
