INTRODUCTION
Peter: Okay, without further adieu, let’s get in today's lesson. Here we go.
Jun: おはよう、トロント。ジュンです。(Ohayō, Toronto. Jun desu.)
Noriko: おはよう、トロント。ノリコです。(Ohayō, Toronto. Noriko desu.)
Peter: Peter here and we are back with another lesson.
Jun: Hello. ジュンです。(Jun desu.)
Noriko: Hi. ノリコです。(Noriko desu.)
Peter: So today we have an interesting topic. We will be talking about average life expectancy. In Japan, the average life expectancy is about 81 years. Now inside of this, I got bad news for you, Jun. You are only looking at 77.8.
Jun: 77.8?
Peter: Yep.
Jun: Oh!
Peter: Start making plans.
Jun: Okay.
Peter: Now Noriko, great news for you. You are looking at 84.6.
Noriko: All right.
Peter: Noriko 84.6. What are you going to do with all that time?
Noriko: Umm, ah I don’t know. I got lots of time to think about it. So I will get back to you.
Peter: I have an idea. You can write scripts, you can do recording, you can work around the clock and it’s great since you won’t be sleeping working here. It’s almost like you are living two lives.
Noriko: All right.
Peter: Congratulations.
Noriko: Thanks, Peter. ありがとう。(Arigatō.)
Peter: No problem. Okay, so without further adieu, let’s get into today’s lesson. Here we go.

POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Peter: Noriko, baby bamboo.
Noriko: Baby, baby, baby, baby...
Peter: She really likes this word, right Noriko?
Noriko: Yeah, I do.
Peter: Why do you like that word so much?
Noriko: It’s cute.
Peter: That it is.
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Peter: Okay, so without any further adieu, let’s get into the vocabulary. Here we go.
Noriko: 食生活 (shokuseikatsu)
Peter: Eating lifestyle.
Noriko: (slow)しょくせいかつ (shokuseikatsu) (natural speed)食生活 (shokuseikatsu)
Peter: Jun, how can we ask Noriko about her eating lifestyle?
Jun: ノリコさんの食生活はどんな感じなんですか。(Noriko-san no shokuseikatsu wa donna kanji nan desu ka.)
Noriko: 朝はコーヒー、昼はおにぎり、夜は色々です。(Asa wa kōhī, hiru wa onigiri, yoru wa iroiro desu.)
Peter: So Noriko, you just have coffee for breakfast?
Noriko: Yeah, that happens every day and every morning. ジュンは?(Jun wa?)
Jun: 朝ごはんはほとんど食べません。(Asagohan wa hotondo tabemasen.)
Peter: So Jun, you don’t eat breakfast?
Jun: Yeah.
Peter: What time do you eat lunch?
Jun: 12時くらい?(Jū ni-ji kurai?)
Peter: Umm around 12. How about dinner?
Jun: 夜は7時か8時くらいかなあ。(Yoru wa shichi-ji ka hachi-ji kurai ka nā.)
Peter: Okay, next we have
Jun: について (ni tsuite)
Peter: About.
Jun: (slow)について (ni tsuite) (natural speed)について (ni tsuite)
Peter: About something. So Noriko, how did we use this in the dialogue?
Noriko: 今日、小林さんの食生活について話します。(Kyō, Kobayashi-san no shokuseikatsu ni tsuite hanashimasu.)
Peter: Yes, today we will talk about Ms. Kobayashi’s eating lifestyle. Now the way we construct this is a noun or a noun phrase and at the end, we attach, Jun?
Jun: について (ni tsuite)
Peter: And it becomes about this. For example, uh, a bit of a dangerous topic. I am not sure if we should do this one but Jun, how do you say, “What do you think about politics?
Jun: 政治についてどう思いますか。(Seiji ni tsuite dō omoimasu ka.)
Peter: What do you think about politics? The word for politics is, Jun?
Jun: 政治 (seiji)
Peter: And this is followed by
Jun: について (ni tsuite)
Peter: Okay. Next we have
Noriko: 焼肉 (yakiniku)
Peter: Barbecued meat.
Noriko: (slow)やきにく (yakiniku) (natural speed)焼肉 (yakiniku) ジュン、焼肉好きですか。(Jun, yakiniku suki desu ka.)
Jun: 大好きです。毎日食べます。(Daisuki desu. Mainichi tabemasu.)
Peter: 本当ですか。(Hontō desu ka.)
Jun: 本当です。(Hontō desu.)
Peter: ノリコ、どう思いますか。(Noriko, dō omoimasu ka.)
Noriko: ちょっと怖い。(Chotto kowai.)
Peter: Okay, next word
Jun: 野菜 (yasai)
Peter: Vegetable.
Jun: (slow)やさい (yasai) (natural speed)野菜 (yasai) ノリコ、野菜は好きですか。(Noriko, yasai wa suki desu ka.)
Noriko: うん、大好きです。(Un, daisuki desu.)
Jun: 野菜、毎日ちゃんと食べてますか。(Yasai, mainichi chanto tabete masu ka.)
Noriko: もちろん、ベジタリアンですから。(Mochiron, bejitarian desu kara.)
Peter: Wait! Noriko, what was that word?
Noriko: ベジタリアン (bejitarian)
Peter: 英語で何と言いますか。(Eigo de nan to iimasu ka.)
Noriko: It’s vegetarian.
Peter: Vegetarian. You know a lot of our listeners ask for this word. We’ve gotten over 15 or 20 emails asking how to say vegetarian in Japanese. Now can you break this down for everybody?
Noriko: Sure. ベジタリアン (bejitarian) (slow)べじたりあん (bejitarian) (natural speed)ベジタリアン (bejitarian)
Peter: Very interesting. Since when?
Noriko: Umm, since when I was 20.
Peter: Wow, just last year.
Noriko: Yeah, 6 months ago.
Peter: Next.
Jun: 竹の子 (takenoko)
Peter: Now in the dialogue, I translated this as baby bamboo just to make Noriko laugh but the proper translation of this word is bamboo sprout. Just the tip of the bamboo when it first starts to come through the soil. Now Jun, what’s the word for going to get the 竹の子 (takenoko) the bamboo sprouts?
Jun: 竹の子掘りですね。(Takenoko hori desu ne.)
Peter: In English, this means, Jun?
Jun: Digging for bamboo sprouts.
Peter: Have you ever done this?
Jun: No.
Peter: ノリコ?(Noriko?)
Noriko: I don’t think so, no.
Peter: I did once.
Jun: Really?
Noriko: In Japan?
Peter: Not in America, Noriko. Yes, in Japan. Went to the mountain and it’s funny. You can just see the tip of it and so when you swing the tool. I don’t even know what that tool is called. You know what it’s called? Kind of like a pick and you swing it and it goes about 10 inches into the soil and up pops the bamboo sprout. Take it home, wash it off, boil it and we put it in the 鍋 (nabe).
Jun: And you put soy sauce on it.
Peter: I recommend that both of you try this someday. Very interesting. All right, not so interesting, but fun. All right, not so fun but it’s worth trying. Noriko, next.
Noriko: 海苔 (nori)
Peter: Seaweed.
Noriko: (slow)のり (nori) (natural speed)海苔 (nori) ジュンさん、韓国の海苔と日本の海苔、どっちが好きですか。(Jun-san, Kankoku no nori to Nihon no nori, dotchi ga suki desu ka.)
Peter: Jun, would she prefer Japanese seaweed or Korean seaweed?
Jun: 韓国の海苔のほうが好きです。(Kankoku no nori no hō ga suki desu.)
Peter: I prefer Korean seaweed.
Jun: ノリコは?(Noriko wa?)
Noriko: 日本の海苔です。(Nihon no nori desu.) I have never tried Korean seaweed before. So Japanese.
Peter: 本当ですか。(Hontō desu ka.)
Jun: 本当に?(Hontō ni?)
Noriko: Is that okay?
Jun: 韓国の海苔は本当に美味しいです。(Kankoku no nori wa hontō ni oishii desu.)
Noriko: Okay, I will try tomorrow. Okay?
Peter: Today.
Noriko: Tonight.
Peter: Jun, let’s go get some.
Peter: Yeah, okay.
Noriko: How about you, Peter?
Peter: I am so sorry, Noriko. I am with Jun. The Korean seaweed is unbelievable.
Noriko: Really?
Peter: Sesame oil and salt.
Jun: It’s very salty.
Noriko: Yeah, it sounds good. I guess I should try tonight.
Jun: Tonight, please.
Peter: Okay.
Jun: 黒酢 (kurozu)
Peter: Famous Okinawan black vinegar.
Jun: (slow)くろず (kurozu) (natural speed)黒酢 (kurozu)
Peter: Now this is supposed to be very good for your body. So since Okinawan people have I believe the longest lifespan in Japan, there could be something to this. What do you think, Noriko ?
Noriko: Hmm, that’s possible.
Peter: ジュン?(Jun?)
Jun: Yeah, I think so.
Peter: So if you get the chance 黒酢 (kurozu).

Noriko: また明日。(Mata ashita.)
Jun: また明日。(Mata ashita.)
