POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Peter: Oh, Natsuko.
Natsuko: What a date! I can’t believe this. What a date!
Peter: It’s so romantic. Drinking on the top of Mt. Fuji…
Natsuko: Yes, yes, yes. I may like the situation with a different person maybe.
Peter: Oh… Wow but again Natsuko, unfortunately it’s not your decision.
Natsuko: No.
Peter: This is up to the listening audience.
Natsuko: Oh…
Peter: Again we need your help.
Natsuko: Oh please.
Peter: So is bachelor #2 the person for Natsuko. Okay, again stop by japanesepod101.com and leave us a post if you think bachelor #2 is the right guy for Natsuko, stop by, leave us a post. If you would like to see Natsuko try bachelor #3, stop by and say bachelor #3.
Natsuko: Hah!
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Peter: Okay, long, long, long dialogue. What we are going to do now is get into some vocabulary. Here we go.
Natsuko: 到着 (tōchaku)
Peter: Arrive. Again we give you this word very often.
Natsuko: 次の言葉いきましょう。頂上 (Tsugi no kotoba ikimashō. chōjō)
Peter: Top.
Natsuko: (slow)ちょうじょう (chōjō) (natural speed)頂上 (chōjō) 次の言葉いきます。水 (Tsugi no kotoba ikimasu. mizu)
Peter: Water.
Natsuko: (slow)みず (mizu) (natural speed)水 (mizu)
Peter: The expression Natsuko gave us in the dialogue was
Natsuko: 水お願いします。(Mizu onegai shimau.)
Peter: But when you are in a restaurant, you might want to be a bit more polite when asking for water. So in a restaurant, what expression will you use?
Natsuko: お水お願いします。(O-mizu onegai shimasu.)
Peter: Yep, just add a
Natsuko: お (o)
Peter: In front of
Natsuko: 水 (mizu)
Peter: And there you have it.
Natsuko: 次は、秒 (Tsugi wa, byō)
Peter: Second.
Natsuko: (slow)びょう (byō) (natural speed)秒 (byō) 次は、遅い (Tsugi wa, osoi)
Peter: Late, slow, it has both meanings.
Natsuko: (slow)おそい (osoi) (natural speed)遅い (osoi)
Peter: So if someone arrives late, we can say
Natsuko: ピーター、遅い!(Pītā, osoi!)
Peter: I said someone, Natsuko.
Natsuko: Oh sorry, sorry as usual.
Peter: Yes. Okay, feel free to use my name interchangeably with anybody. Also if someone is moving slow, you can say
Natsuko: 遅いよ。(Osoi yo.)
Peter: For example, whenever we are watching the Japanese national soccer team play
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: We often hear
Natsuko: ナカタ、遅い!(Nakata, osoi!)
Peter: Oh, yes.
Natsuko: Useful.
Peter: Very useful. I like that one. Natsuko, that’s a great example.
Natsuko: I didn’t act that.
Peter: ナカタ (Nakata) is slow. Okay…
Natsuko: Not really.
Peter: Okay, I will take it back. We have it…
Natsuko: He is capable enough.
Peter: Oh…
Natsuko: じゃ、次。景色 (Ja, tsugi. keshiki)
Peter: View.
Natsuko: (slow)けしき (keshiki) (natural speed)景色 (keshiki)
Peter: And in Japan, they have many
Natsuko: 素晴らしい景色 (subarashii keshiki)
Peter: Yes, lots of mountains and in the fall, that’s especially…
Natsuko: Oh yes, I heard that western people refer that every river in Japan looks like a waterfall because mountains are so near to the sea, the water flow is very rapid.
Peter: Yeah, they have – well you will see for yourself one day or you already know.
Natsuko: Umm yes. Very beautiful.
Peter: Okay, next.
Natsuko: 次は、痛い (Tsugi wa, itai)
Peter: Painful, pain but it can also mean ouch.
Natsuko: Yes. 痛い!(Itai!)
Peter: Yes. For example, when Natsuko hits me. 痛い!(Itai!)
Natsuko: I am sorry.
Peter: It kind of looked like it was on purpose but yes you say so, Natsuko.
Natsuko: (slow)いたい (itai) (natural speed)痛い (itai)
Peter: And in the dialogue, what construction did you use, Natsuko?
Natsuko: 痛いし、(itai shi,)
Peter: Now we had a lot of questions about this し (shi).
Natsuko: Oh yes.
Peter: And what this means is end among other things.
Natsuko: Yes, right.
Peter: So I am in pain and so on.
Natsuko: Yes. 痛いし、(itai shi,)
Peter: Okay. Next.
Natsuko: 息 (iki)
Peter: Breath.
Natsuko: (slow)いき (iki) (natural speed)息 (iki)
Peter: And this was paired with
Natsuko: 苦しい (kurushii)
Peter: Painful.
Natsuko: (slow)くるしい (kurushii) (natural speed)苦しい (kurushii)
Peter: This phrase together was
Natsuko: 息が苦しい (iki ga kurushii)
Peter: So I am having trouble breathing.
Natsuko: Yes. Poor Natsuko.
Peter: Poor, poor Natsuko.
Natsuko: 次は、メートル (Tsugi wa, mētoru)
Peter: Meter, meters.
Natsuko: (slow)めーとる (mētoru) (natural speed)メートル (mētoru) 次は、ビール (Tsugi wa, bīru)
Peter: Beer.
Natsuko: (slow)びーる (bīru) (natural speed)ビール (bīru)
Peter: Okay, and don’t confuse this with the word for building, which is
Natsuko: ビル (biru)
Peter: Yes. ビール (bīru) has the long vowel.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: And finally
Natsuko: ワイン (wain)
Peter: Wine.
Natsuko: (slow)わいん (wain) (natural speed)ワイン (wain)
Peter: Okay, and we cannot recommend drinking on the top of Mt. Fuji.
Natsuko: Yes, you better not.
Peter: The air up there is pretty thin. So some people bring up oxygen just in case.
Natsuko: Yes, right.

Outro

Peter: Okay. So that’s going to do for today.
Natsuko: じゃあ、また明日ね。(Jā, mata ashita ne.)
Peter: See you tomorrow.

Hi Vinod,

Thank you for the question!

痛い is a pain caused by disease or when you cut or hit your body.

苦しい is a pain caused by disease or a pressure from the outside and it's hard to put up with.

so when you cut your finger, you can say 痛い but you don't say 苦しい.

We use 苦しい when it's hard to breathe.

Thank you for studying with us!

Sincerely,

Erica

Omg, I thought nobody could be more annoying than Shakespeare Takahashi. Why are these guys all so terrible? If the last one, who sounded terrible in the show, ends up being the best one, I'm gonna throw something. XD Of course, that would be better than them all being awful.

Shane san,

Konnichiwa.

‘富士山から来た独身男性だから、夏子はかれがすきでしょう。彼は遅くないですよね’ are better sentences.

Bachelor three is the guy from Mount Fuji! Natsuko probably likes him. No way is he slow!
