INTRODUCTION
(Ohayō Tōkyō.)
Peter: Good morning, everybody. We are back again with another lesson. Without further ado, we’re gonna jump right into the lesson today. Okay...if you haven’t caught what we’ve been doing this week, check back and see lesson 5 because today we’re gonna jump right in. Two new words. What is one new word we’re going to study today?
Sakura: It's...どこ (doko)
Peter: Yes, very nice. And what does どこ (doko) mean?
Sakura: どこ (doko) is where.
Peter: Yes. Okay; very very nice. Could you give us one more time and break it down nice and slowly, please?
Sakura: どこ (doko)
Peter: Yes; very nice. And one time fast.
Sakura: どこ (doko)
Peter: Yes; okay. And we have one more new word today. Could you give us that word?
Sakura: だれ (dare)
Peter: Okay. And what does this word mean?
Sakura: This is ‘who’.
Peter: Yes. And now, could you break down that word nice and slowly?
Sakura: だれ (dare)
Peter: Okay. And now, nice and quick.
Sakura: だれ (dare)
Peter: Very very nice. So, these are the new words that we’re going to incorporate in today’s conversation. Okay? Now, please sit back and listen. Don’t try to get it all now. We’re gonna review it afterwards. Okay, so, here we go.

Peter: Okay. Did everybody out there catch that? What we’re gonna do now is we’re gonna break this conversation down a bit. We’re going to go through a little bit slower.
(Ohayō. A, sumimasen.)
(Kawamoto Natsuko-san wa doko desu ka.)

POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Peter: Okay, very very nice. A bunch of things that we’re going to work on today, I’m sure some of you picked up, that today we have to introduce a new member.
Sakura: Uh-huh!
Peter: Please welcome, everybody, Miss…
Sakura: Sakura Suzuki
Peter: Yes.
(Hajimemashite.)
Peter: Okay; yeah, we have been working on introduction all week, so could you give everybody your self-introduction?
Sakura: Okay. (Hajimemashite.)
(Watashi wa, Suzuki Sakura desu. Yoroshiku onegai shimasu.)
Peter: Very very nice. Okay; what we’re gonna do now is, err first, meet Sakura, and then we’re gonna break down the conversation we just worked on now. Now, Sakura, can you tell us a little something about yourself?
Sakura: Ah, well, let’s see; now, I lived in Ireland for about five years.
Peter: Really?
Sakura: Yes. And now, working as a translator.
Peter: And she’s very very good.
Sakura: And helping Peter here with this recording.

Lesson focus

Peter: Thank you so much. Okay; so now, what we’re gonna do is we’re going to, er, break down this conversation. The first thing, the first point is ‘where is’, right? And how do we say, err, ‘where is’?
(Doko desu ka.)
Peter: Yes; very very nice. So, in our example, we used Natsuko. Could you read the sentence one more time, please?
Sakura: Okay. (Kawamoto Natsuko-san wa doko desu ka.)
Peter: Very very nice. ‘Where is Natsuko Kawamoto?’ One more time, please?
(Kawamoto Natsuko-san wa doko desu ka.)
Peter: ‘Where is Natsuko Kawamoto?’ Now, could you break it down, very very slowly for us?
(Kawamoto Natsuko-san wa doko desu ka.)
Peter: Okay; very very nice. ‘Where is Natsuko Kawamoto?’ The response to that was…?
(Kawamoto-san wa isogashii desu.)
Peter: Yes. ‘Miss Kawamoto is busy.’ One more time, please?
(Kawamoto-san wa isogashii desu.)
Peter: Okay. ‘Miss Kawamoto is busy.’ One more time, very slowly.
(Kawamoto-san wa isogashii desu.)
Peter: Yes. ‘Miss Kawamoto is busy.’ Now, we attached the suffix さん (san), correct?
Sakura: はい。(Hai.)
Peter: And what does this mean?
Sake: Well, this is...umm, it can be ‘mister’ or ‘missus’ or ‘miss’; it’s used...it can be used for anybody.
Peter: Yes. Okay; very nice. So, in my case, how would you call me?
Sakura: Well, erm..we may call you Peter…. (Gyarante-san.).
Peter: Yes.
Sakura: Yes. Because erm...usually we, we use our last name.
Peter: Yes.
(Suzuki-san), but umm, when we call, like, non-Japanese people, we sometimes call by their first names. It’s very popular.
Peter: Okay. Thank you so much for that..little input there. So now, let’s move on to the next sentence. Could you give us that sentence one more time, please?
Sakura: Okay. (Sakai Kazunori-san wa doko desu ka.)
Peter: Yes. Very nice. ‘Where is Kazunori Sakai?’ Okay; one more time, please?
(Sakai Kazunori-san wa doko desu ka.)
Peter: Okay. Very very nice; very nice. ‘Where is Kazunori Sakai?’ And the next sentence.
(Sakai-san mo isogashii desu.)
Peter: Yes. ‘Mr. Sakai is also busy.’ Now, right? We have the...how do we say ‘also’?
Sakura: も
Peter: Yes. We studied that last time. So remember. Can you give us the sentence one more time?
Sakura: Okay. (Sakai-san mo isogashii desu.)
Peter: Okay; very nice. And the next sentence.
(Anata wa, dare desu ka.)
Peter: Very nice. ‘Who are you?’ It’s a bit….
Sakura: Well, it can be used.
Peter: Okay, we twisted this conversation just to get this in, but it’s not that kind of...you know, ‘who are you?’ is kind of...
Sakura: そうね。(Sō ne.) Hm, hm, hm, hm.
Peter: Don’t go around using this too much. We just wanted to introduce the word for ‘who’, which is?
Sakura: だれ (dare)
Peter: Yes, and ‘who is’?
Peter: Yes; so, we don’t recommend you using this phrase, but…
Sakura: Maybe you can use it for, like, ‘who is he?’ or, you know, ‘who is she?’
Peter: ...which we’re gonna get to in a little while.
Sakura: Okay.
Peter: So, we’re running out of time here, so wh-wh..what we’re gonna do is we’re just gonna stop the conversation; stop the review here. We’re gonna move on to some drills because we want to get the...we want to get the word ‘who’ into your drill...into your brain. So, now we’re gonna do some drilling and we have come up with a little bit of a drill that you might find interesting.
Sakura: Um-hm.
Peter: As you just mentioned, maybe we can use this phrase for ‘he is’, correct?
Sakura: Right.
Peter: So, how do we say ‘he is’?
Sakura: かれは (kare wa)
Peter: Oh, I’m sorry; maybe we can use this, err, as you said, we can use this for ‘who is he’, right?
Sakura: Right.
Peter: The structure. ‘Who is he?’ So, what I’d like to do now is, erm, go through...err, the question: ‘who is he?’ How can we say ‘who is he?’
(Kare wa, dare desu ka.)
Peter: Very nice. One more time, please?
(Kare wa, dare desu ka.)
Peter: Okay; ‘who is he?’ and break it down nice and slow for us.
(Kare wa, dare desu ka.)
Peter: Very nice. If you remember, we had, err, かれ (kare) yesterday. So, now what I’m gonna do...you know what? Let’s not; we’re gonna test your Japanese.
Sakura: Uh-oh.
Peter: Now, we’re going to use Katakana words.
Sakura: Okay.
Peter: Okay? And for, oh, those of you out there who are not too familiar, this is Japanese version of taking English words and conforming them, almost imposing their will on these words and changing them. So, it’s very daf...difficult for us natives to hear, but it’s very convenient for Japanese to hear. So, what I’m going to do is I’m going to ask Sakura ‘who is he?’ and she’s going to say ‘he is’. And now the point to this exercise is: one, to listen to the question ‘who is he?’, and also I want you to try and listen, and see if you can find out who we’re talking about. Okay? So, we’re gonna give you this form. Let’s start out.
(Sakura, kare wa, dare desu ka.)
(Kare wa, Buraddo Pitto desu.)
Peter: Did you catch that? We’re gonna do it one more time.
(Kare wa, dare desu ka.)
(Kare wa, Buraddo Pitto desu.)
Peter: Very nice. Give us the name; just the name, once.
Sakura: Okay. (Buraddo Pitto)
Peter: Okay. Anybody get that? Who is he?
Sakura: He’s Brad Pitt.
Peter: Very nice. Okay; next.
(Kare wa, dare desu ka.)
(Kare wa, Nikorasu Keiji desu.)
Peter: Very nice. One more time.
(Kare wa, dare desu ka.)
(Kare wa, Nikorasu Keiji desu.)
Peter: Okay; very nice. Give us the name one more time, on its own, please?
(Nikorasu Keiji)
Peter: Okay. And? Who is he?
Sakura: He’s Nicolas Cage.
Peter: Very nice. How are you doing out there? Are you getting the hang of these?
Sakura: Hope so.
Peter: We hope so; definitely, but it takes a while, so don’t...don’t despair. We’re going to get you through this. Okay; next one.
(Kare wa, dare desu ka.)
(Kare wa, Tomu Hankusu desu.)
Peter: Very nice. A little hint to you; as...previous two, we’re talking about actors.
(Kare wa, dare desu ka.)
(Kare wa, Tomu Hankusu desu.)
Peter: Very nice. And give us the name one time, please.
(Tomu Hankusu)
Peter: Very nice. Okay. Who is he?
Sakura: He’s Tom Hanks.
Peter: Very nice. Okay; let’s move on to some actresses and singers.
Sakura: Okay.
Peter: Okay; so, can you give us the word..er, Sakura, for ‘she’?
Peter: Yes. Everybody, remember from yesterday? Okay; so here we go.
(Kanojo wa, dare desu ka.)
(Kanojo wa, Madonna desu.)
Peter: Okay. I think that...that one you can get. Huh? What do you think? You have a good shot at that, right?
(Kanojo wa, dare desu ka.)
(Kanojo wa, Madonna desu.)
Peter: Okay, and give us the name once.
(Madonna)
Peter: Okay. Who is she?
Sakura: Madonna.
Peter: Yes; very nice. Next.
(Kanojo wa, dare desu ka.)
(Kanojo wa, Ōdorī Heppubān desu.)
Peter: Okay; now a little hint here. Errm...there might be a little bit of a generation gap here, so erm, for the...those young listeners out there, ermm, you might want to rent Breakfast at Tiffany’s or something like this. Oh, a bit of a hint there. I’m sure some of you out there already know who we’re talking about. Let’s do it one more time.
(Kanojo wa, dare desu ka.)
(Kanojo wa, Ōdorī Heppubān desu.)
Peter: Very nice. One more time, please. Just the name.
Peter: Very nice. Okay; who is she?
Sakura: She’s Audrey Hepburn.
Peter: Yes; very very nice. Okay; next. Errm, let’s do...
(Kanojo wa, dare desu ka.)
(Kanojo wa, Sandora Burokku desu.)
Peter: Very nice. This is a little tough, I think; this one might be a little tough. What do you think, Sakura?
Sakura: Hmm, maybe.
Peter: Okay; erm, one more time.
(Kanojo wa, dare desu ka.)
(Kanojo wa, Sandora Burokku desu.)
Peter: Okay, and just the name one time, please.
(Sandora Burokku)
Peter: Okay. 3, 2, 1…who is she?
Sakura: She’s Sandra Bullock.
Peter: Very very nice. Okay. Well, I think that went very well. Now, what we’re gonna do is we’re going to have Sakura read the questions because I had to read the questions today, because again our alpha male Kazunori…that guy...I think he’s out late last night. He’s got dates every day in a week.
Sakura: Of course; yes.
Peter: Unfortunately, he’s not here today, so we’re gonna do is, we’re gonna have Sakura read the questions so you get that proper pronunciation. Please, Sakura?
(Kare wa, dare desu ka.)
Peter: Yes; very nice. One more time, please?
(Kare wa, dare desu ka.)
Peter: And slowly.
(Kare wa dare desu ka.)
Peter: Okay; very nice. And how about ‘who is she?’
(Kanojo wa, dare desu ka.)
Peter: Very nice; one more time, please?
(Kanojo wa, dare desu ka.)
Peter: Okay, and nice and slowly; ‘who is she?’
(Kanojo wa, dare desu ka.)
Peter: Okay; very very nice. Okay, so that’s gonna end our show today. We had...we ran a little long, so we’re going to say goodbye. And the way we say goodbye usually is...

Outro

Sakura: またね。(Mata ne.)
Peter: Yes; very nice. Okay? So, one more time?
Sakura: またね。(Mata ne.)
(Jā ne.) See you tomorrow.
Sakura: Bye.
