POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Peter: So Natsuko, what do you think?
Natsuko: I don’t arrive. You know, I don’t appear in this conversation.
Peter: Yeah, but what do you think about Shakespeare Takahashi’s commitment towards you?
Natsuko: It’s amazing, isn’t it?
Peter: Amazing.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: Crazy. There is a fine line, right?
Natsuko: Umm… Umm… I wonder what all the other people feel.
Peter: Yeah, I don’t know. I am supporting him, I think.
Natsuko: Are you sure?
Peter: I think he has good intentions. What do you think?
Natsuko: Umm well, he is quite different from people around me.
Peter: I think that’s the perfect way to describe it. Quite different is a good way.
Natsuko: Yes.
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Peter: All right. Long conversation. So what we are going to do now is we are going to jump into the vocabulary because we have a lot.
Natsuko: Okay.
Peter: Okay. Natsuko, first word, please.
Natsuko: 嘘 (uso)
Peter: It can mean a straight-out lie, it can mean you are kidding, get out of here. Again it’s in the context.
Natsuko: (slow)うそ (uso) (natural speed)嘘 (uso)
Peter: This is a word you will hear in Japanese all the time.
Natsuko: Right.
Peter: Now it can mean a lie, it can mean get out of here. If someone tells you some shocking news,
Natsuko: 嘘!(Uso!)
Peter: That’s a nice 嘘 (uso), by the way.
Natsuko: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Peter: This could take on the meaning of come on, get out of here. You are kidding, you are joking, right?
Natsuko: Yeah, it’s like you know, really? Sometimes 嘘 (uso)!?
Peter: There it is.
Natsuko: Like that.
Peter: So if you are looking at a magazine, I say to you Natsuko. (A, mae no kanojo desu.)
Natsuko: 嘘!?(Uso!?)
Peter: And how would that be?
Natsuko: You are kidding.
Peter: Yeah, probably in this case, I am lying. Yeah, and what was the phrase I just gave you?
Natsuko: 前の彼女 (mae no kanojo)
Peter: My ex-girlfriend. Again a bunch of meanings for this word. In the context of the story, which one did it mean?
Natsuko: You are kidding.
Peter: Yeah. Obviously he expected to meet you and you disappointed him.
Natsuko: I feel a bit sorry for him.
Peter: Oh Natsuko, don’t be soft.
Natsuko: Okay.
Peter: There are plenty more bachelors we have coming up for you.
Natsuko: Oh my god!
Peter: Okay, next we have
Natsuko: 約束 (yakusoku)
Peter: Appointment, promise.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: In the dialogue, we said
Natsuko: 8時の約束 (hachi-ji no yakusoku)
Peter: An 8 o’ clock appointment and 8 o’ clock meeting and the way we make this construction is, we do what, Natsuko?
Natsuko: You add の (no) in front of 約束 (yakusoku)
Peter: Yep, and before that, you would add a time.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: Or date perhaps.
Natsuko: Uhoo, yes.
Peter: And plus の (no) and 約束 (yakusoku)
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: Now this is a noun form. Now Natsuko, how can we make this into a verb?
Natsuko: You add する (suru), 約束する (yakusoku suru).
Peter: Yep, there it is. Next we have
Natsuko: 余裕 (yoyū)
Peter: Leeway.
Natsuko: (slow)よゆう (yoyū) (natural speed)余裕 (yoyū)
Peter: This expression is often used by itself.
Natsuko: Yes. (Yoyū desho.)
Peter: For example, this weekend Natsuko is gracious enough to go with me to the movies.
Natsuko: Yes, let’s.
Peter: Thank you, Natsuko. Wow, you are in a great mood today.
Natsuko: I am always like this.
Peter: So the movie is at 8 o’ clock. It’s 6 o’ clock now.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: So we are thinking, do we go eat, do we not eat. So I say to Natsuko, Natsuko, you think we have time to eat and Natsuko, if she is confident we do, she would say
(Yoyū desho.)
Peter: Lots of time, no problem. We can fit it in there. My friend, I don’t know how he does it. He has got a really big car but whatever parking space he sees, I say to him, no way you fit in there. He says,
Natsuko: 余裕。(Yoyū.)
Peter: No problem, plenty of room but remember, it’s not a problem without condition. There is usually a condition that the person who says this feels it’s easy to overcome.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: In that sense, it’s no problem.
Natsuko: Yes. You know, not very objective.
Peter: Exactly. Okay, next we have
Natsuko: きっと (kitto)
Peter: Surely.
(Natsuko wa kitto kimasu.) What do you think? She would surely come. You are Natsuko, what’s going on, Natsuko?
Natsuko: Oh, you are cornering me. Should I go? What do you think, should I go?
Peter: I don’t know. She seems genuine.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: Again this word is used a lot. And this is kind of used in the case where you have confidence that something will occur.
Natsuko: You are expecting something.
Peter: Yes, Natsuko. (Ashita no shiken ni gōkaku shimasu ka.)
(Un, kitto gōkaku shimasen.) How was that?
Peter: Natsuko, you read my mind. You took my line.
Natsuko: Sorry.
Peter: I don’t know how to be positive and supportive. What do I say, Natsuko, help me? (Natsuko wa ashita no shiken ni kitto gōkaku shimasu.)
(Pītā mo kitto gōkaku shimasu.)
(Uso deshō.)
(Chigaimasu, hontō desu.)
(Uso deshō.)
Natsuko: You use it that way.
Peter: There it is, you are lying. It’s a lie. You are joking.
Natsuko: No, I am not.
Peter: Okay, next we have
Peter: Now in the dialogue, we used this with
Peter: So it’s about to start or momentarily it will be starting. Again to give a definition to these words, we have to judge them in the context they are used.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: And you will find this construction quite often which is
(Sorosoro hajimarimasu.)
Peter: Also we have
(Sorosoro ikimashō.)
Peter: In a few moments, let’s go.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: I think a few moments might be pretty good. In a few moments, the show will start.
Natsuko: Yes, it's rather vague.
Peter: Yes.
Natsuko: It can be any minute but it may be a little longer, too.
Peter: How do we say vague in Japanese?
Natsuko: 曖昧 (aimai)
Peter: Break it down.
Peter: And one time fast.
Natsuko: 曖昧 (aimai)
Peter: And this is a na-adjective. So Natsuko, can I say (Nihon-go wa aimai desu)?
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: Japanese is vague.
Natsuko: Yes.
(Nihon-go wa monosugoi aimai desu.)
Natsuko: Umm.
Peter: Very soon.
Peter: Very soon. Okay, next we have
Natsuko: 紹介 (shōkai)
Peter: Introduction.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: Now Natsuko, how do we make this into a verb?
Natsuko: Again, add する (suru).
Peter: And it becomes
Peter: To introduce.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: So how would I say to introduce my friend?
(Tomodachi o shōkai shimasu.)
Peter: What was the particle? (Mō ichi-do onegai shimasu. Yukkuri onegai shimasu.)
(Tomodachi o shōkai shimasu.)
Peter: Okay, so we use
Natsuko: を (o)
Peter: With whatever you want to introduce. Okay, next
Peter: To close.
Peter: What is the dictionary form of this word?
Natsuko: 閉める (shimeru)
Peter: Okay, and last. Oh we saved the best for last. What do we have last, Natsuko?
(Tamasaburō)
Peter: Okay, Natsuko. I have no idea. What’s going on here? Help us out.
Natsuko: It’s one of the most famous kabuki actors in Japan. His full name is 坂東玉三郎 (Bandō Tamasaburō) and he is most well known for the female part.
Peter: Ah…
Natsuko: It’s really beautiful but he is good at dancing and acting and I think some people know his name because he is introducing Kabuki actively overseas as well.
Peter: Thank you, Natsuko.
Natsuko: You are welcome.

Outro

Peter: Okay, so that’s going to do it for today. We ran for so long.
Natsuko: Oh yes. (Jā, mata ashita ne.)
Peter: See you tomorrow.
