YOSHI: How much do you think my Armani suit is?
ピーター (Pītā) : そうですね。(Sō desu ne.)

高瀬 (Takase) : 値札がここにあります。(Nefuda ga koko ni arimasu.)
TAKASE: The price tag is right here.
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Peter: So Takase, did you like that conversation?
Takase: Yes.
Peter: If you could only see Takase’s smile. Ah light up the whole dark room we are in. Okay, let’s get into the vocabulary. Takase, first word, please.
Takase: アルマーニ (Arumāni)
Peter: Armani.
Takase: (slow)あるまーに (Arumāni) (natural speed)アルマーニ (Arumāni)
Peter: タカセ、あなたのスーツはアルマーニですか。(Takase, anata no sūtsu wa Arumāni desu ka.)
Takase: そうです。アルマーニです。(Sō desu. Arumāni desu.)
Peter: Let me see that.
Takase: See?
Peter: But Takase, AL
Takase: But it's the same in Japanese. It’s called Armani.
Peter: That’s why Takase is always dressed nicely. Yes, the L and the R are the same. So in Japanese, ‘ar’ or ‘al’ would both be.
Takase: ある (aru)
Peter: Yep. So Takase Almani is also known as
Takase: アルマーニ (Arumāni)
Peter: Takase, you are very crafty. Okay, next up we have
Yoshi: スーツ (sūtsu)
Peter: Suit.
Yoshi: (slow)すーつ (sūtsu) (natural speed)スーツ (sūtsu)
Takase: ヨシ、あなたのスーツはどのブランドですか。(Yoshi, anata no sūtsu wa dono burando desu ka.)
Yoshi: アルマーニです。(Arumāni desu.)
Peter: Ar or Al?
Yoshi: Ar.
Peter: Oh, looking nice. Okay, give us that question one more time.
Takase: ヨシ、あなたのスーツはどのブランドですか。(Yoshi, anata no sūtsu wa dono burando desu ka.)
Peter: Which brand is your suit?
Yoshi: アルマーニです。(Arumāni desu.)
Peter: It’s Armani. Okay Takase, next up we have.
Takase: くらい (kurai)
Peter: About.
Takase: (slow)くらい (kurai) (natural speed)くらい (kurai)
Peter: We can also say
Takase: ぐらい (gurai)
Peter: Yes, sometimes when this word is attached like in the dialogue, we would say
Takase: ぐらい (gurai)
Peter: So if a noun comes in front of くらい (kurai), it becomes
Takase: ぐらい (gurai)
Peter: In some cases. And this means about. In the dialogue we had
Takase: 999円ぐらい (kyū-hyaku kyū-jū kyū-en gurai)
Peter: About ¥999. Next word we have.
Yoshi: 以上 (ijō)
Peter: More than, over.
Yoshi: (slow)いじょう (ijō) (natural speed)以上 (ijō)
Peter: In the dialogue, we had
Yoshi: 999以上の数字が分かりません。 (Kyū-hyaku kyū-jū kyū ijō no sūji ga wakarimasen.)
Peter: I don’t know numbers over 999. Okay, so over. Also this word can be used when ordering. When you are finished ordering, you would say
Takase: 以上です。(Ijō desu.)
Peter: Meaning that’s it. So this word does have multiple meanings. Okay, next up we have.
Takase: 以上わかりません。(Ijō wakarimasen.)
Peter: Don’t know more than. So we said over, more than. Now this combined with the verb
Takase: わかりません (wakarimasen)
Peter: I don’t know more than something, something. Okay, next up.
Yoshi: 1000 (sen)
Peter: 1000.
Yoshi: (slow)せん (sen) (natural speed)1000 (sen)
Peter: Okay, yes. In previous lessons, we got you through the 100s, but now we want to get you into the 1000s. So we are going to give you a real quick rundown of 1000 all the way up to 9000. So Takase, how do we say 1000?
Takase: せん (sen)
Peter: 2000
Yoshi: にせん (ni-sen)
Peter: 3000
Takase: さんぜん (san-zen)
Peter: One more time.
Takase: さんぜん (san-zen)
Peter: Okay, again this one changes さんぜん (san-zen)
Yoshi: よんせん (yon-sen)
Takase: ごぜん (go-sen)
Yoshi: ろくせん (roku-sen)
Takase: ななせん (nana-sen)
Yoshi: はっせん (hassen)
Takase: きゅうせん (kyū-sen)
Peter: So all of them are せん (sen) except for
Takase: さんぜん (san-zen)
Peter: Very easy. Not too many irregulars in this one. Now everyone can count from 1 to 9000. What’s the big next step?
Yoshi: 万 (man)
Peter: And this is
Yoshi: 10,000.
Peter: Yep, okay. Why do we need this one, Yoshi?
Yoshi: Because it is very important.
Peter: Okay ,why is it important?
Yoshi: Because $1 is ¥100. So Japanese numbers get big really fast.
Peter: Really fast. Takase, what was that number you gave us in the dialogue?
Takase: 6万6千円 (roku-man roku-sen-en)
Peter: Okay, and this is, Yoshi?
Yoshi: ¥66,000.
Peter: Yes, now again remember, ¥100 equals about $1. So if we divide this by 100, we get
Yoshi: $660.
Peter: Yeah, so you can imagine, once we start getting into 1000s and 10,000s of dollars, we are going to have some big, big Japanese numbers. So we got to get used to these numbers real quick because although 10,000 seems like a lot, it’s only equivalent to about $86. So we got to get you accustomed to these bigger numbers fast. So what we are going to do now is we are going to count all the way to 90,000. Okay, give us the word for 10,000 one more time.
Yoshi: いちまん (ichi-man)
Peter: 20,000
Takase: にまん (ni-man)
Peter: 30,000
Yoshi: さんまん (san-man)
Takase: よんまん (yon-man)
Yoshi: ごまん (go-man)
Takase: ろくまん (roku-man)
Yoshi: ななまん (nana-man)
Takase: はちまん (hachi-man)
Yoshi: きゅうまん (kyū-man)
Peter: Okay, no irregulars. Oh this is very, very good. Great news for everybody. See, once the numbers get big, the irregulars stop. I guess back in the day, not too many people used these numbers. They didn’t get a chance to change them. Okay, a couple of points. What was 40,000? Remember, we have to be careful when we are dealing with the #4 because it can change a lot. Takase, can you give us 40,000 one more time?
Takase: 4万 (yon-man)
Peter: Now is there a ‘n’ in there?
Takase: Yes.
Peter: Okay, one more time nice and slow.
Takase: (slow)よんまん (yon-man)
Peter: There it is, 40,000, 4万 (yon-man). So all the way from 1000 to 90,000, there is only one irregular.
Yoshi: 3千 (san-zen)
Peter: Now we should take one more look at 4,000. What’s 4,000, Takase?
Takase: 4千 (yon-sen) (slow)よんせん (yon-sen)
Peter: Okay, so counting these numbers are pretty straightforward. Just one irregular. The 4s are both よん (yon). Just add the suffix to the numbers. So for the 1000s, it is
Takase: 千 (sen)
Peter: For 10,000s, it is
Yoshi: 万 (man)

Outro

Peter: Okay, that’s it. Done deal. We can officially – well we can almost go shopping because you are going to need a little bit more to go shopping in Ginza, right Takase? Seems like flashbacks. Okay, that’s going to do it for today.
Takase: また明日。(Mata ashita.)
Yoshi: またね。(Mata ne.)
