VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Peter: Yes Kaze, you just want the money.
Natsuko: What a guy!
Peter: What a guy!
Kaze: No money.
Peter: No money. Okay, so without further adieu, we are going to jump right into the vocabulary. Okay, here we go.
Natsuko: 原宿 (Harajuku)
Peter: And this is
Natsuko: Harajuku.
Peter: The world famous Harajuku. Okay, break it down.
Natsuko: (slow)はらじゅく (Harajuku)
Peter: And one time fast.
Natsuko: 原宿 (Harajuku)
Peter: Okay.
Natsuko: I didn’t know Harajuku was so popular.
Peter: Oh yes, it is. I don’t know if it’s the official fashion capital of the world but it is up there.
Natsuko: It’s quite unique.
Peter: Quite unique it is, yes. It’s been said that many designers from around the world actually come to Harajuku to check out the latest fashions.
Natsuko: Wow!
Peter: Yeah.
Natsuko: That’s amazing.
Peter: Amazing, right?
Natsuko: Uhoo.
Peter: So for those of you coming to Japan, I think you definitely might want to check out Harajuku. You know, this is such a special place that I think we are going to take a JCC to look at it.
Natsuko: Wow!
Peter: Yes, it’s that good. When was the last time you were in Harajuku?
Natsuko: Oh I went there about a month ago.
Peter: Really?
Natsuko: Yes, for a live – for a concert.
Peter: Ah, a concert.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: Wow, sounds nice!
Natsuko: Kind of a young Rock group.
Peter: How was it?
Natsuko: It was good.
Peter: Excellent, okay. Next we have
Natsuko: にぎやか (nigiyaka)
Peter: Lively.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: Break it down.
Natsuko: (slow)にぎやか (nigiyaka)
Peter: And one time fast.
Natsuko: にぎやか (nigiyaka)
Peter: Okay, now this adjective is
Natsuko: na-adjective.
Peter: Yes, so we can say にぎやかな原宿 (nigiyaka na Harajuku)
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: Right.
Natsuko: Right.
Peter: Again, na-adjective and next we have
Natsuko: 麻雀 (mājan)
Peter: Mahjong, same in English but definitely the pronunciation between Chinese, Japanese and English is quite different as we are going to show you in a minute. Can you give us the Japanese pronunciation one more time?
Natsuko: 麻雀 (mājan)
Peter: Break it down.
Natsuko: (slow)まーじゃん (mājan)
Peter: And one time fast.
Natsuko: 麻雀 (mājan)
Peter: English Mahjong. Have you ever played this game?
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: Do you like it?
Natsuko: I do.
Peter: Ah so in the conversation, you wouldn’t be honest.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: Yeah, this is a very popular game.
Natsuko: Yeah, it’s quite interesting.
Peter: I know some college kids who stay up all night just playing this game.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: And they bet a lot of money, too.
Natsuko: I usually don’t but yes, some people do.
Peter: I think you know the college kids might be kind of into that because sometimes in my friends, let’s go eat. I can’t.
Natsuko: And the reason is?
Peter: Well, last night Mahjong didn’t go as planned and also some people are very good at it. And I have another friend and I asked him, do you want to go out tonight? I can’t go out tonight but I am playing Mahjong. So tomorrow night, I will have a lot of money.
Natsuko: I see.
Peter: Now they call someone who is not good at Mahjong.
Natsuko: カモ (kamo)
Peter: There it is. And what is this?
Natsuko: Victim.
Peter: Yes, but what’s the literal translation?
Natsuko: Oh it’s Duck.
Peter: Duck. Break it down for us.
Natsuko: (slow)かも (kamo)
Peter: And one time fast.
Natsuko: カモ (kamo)
Peter: Yeah, I asked my friend why do you say duck for a person who is easy to beat. They said because the duck is very easy to catch and tastes delicious.
Natsuko: There is a saying called, カモがネギしょってやって来る (kamo ga negi shotte yatte kuru)
Peter: Hah! What does it mean?
Natsuko: Duck carries a leak to you. So it means just take it and make it into 鍋 (nabe).
Peter: Oh boy, all right. Not enough time to get into detail about this but check our home page and we will have something up about this expression that Natsuko just gave us. It is awesome. Okay, next we have
Natsuko: お金 (o-kane)
Peter: Okay, and this is
Natsuko: Money.
Peter: Break it down.
Natsuko: (slow)おかね (o-kane)
Peter: And one time fast.
Natsuko: お金 (o-kane)
Peter: Oh yes, and you can just say 金 (kane) it’s money too, right?
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: The お (o) gets put in front quite often, though.
Natsuko: Yes, it makes it more kind of a polite and refined way to say about money.
Peter: Yeah, I guess money is a delicate subject to talk about.
Natsuko: Yes, definitely.
Peter: So yeah, you might want to stick with the お (o).
Natsuko: Yeah, you better.
Peter: Oh Natsuko said, you better do it. Okay, next we have.
Natsuko: 必要 (hitsuyō)
Peter: Very important word.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: This is
Natsuko: Necessary.
Peter: Necessary. Okay, break it down.
Natsuko: (slow)ひつよう (hitsuyō)
Peter: And one time fast.
Natsuko: 必要 (hitsuyō)
Peter: Now a popular construction with this word is 何々が必要です。(Naninani ga hitsuyō desu.)
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: Right.
Natsuko: Yes, I need something.
Peter: I need something. In my case, お金が必要です。(O-kane ga hitsuyō desu.) How about in your case, Natsuko?
Natsuko: 時間が必要です。(Jikan ga hitsuyō desu.)
Peter: Ah, a very nice one.
Natsuko: Uhoo and I really do.
Peter: もう一度お願いします。(Mō ichi-do onegai shimasu.)
Natsuko: 時間が必要です。(Jikan ga hitsuyō desu.)
Peter: I need time.
Natsuko: Time.
Peter: And for this show, ナツコとさくらとカズノリとカゼが必要です。(Natsuko to Sakura to Kazunori to Kaze ga hitsuyō desu.)
Natsuko: ピーターが必要です。(Pītā ga hitsuyō desu.)
Peter: ナツコが必要です。(Natsuko ga hitsuyō desu.)
Natsuko: We need all of us.
Peter: Yes. Everybody is necessary. Okay, again 何々が必要です。(Naninani ga hitsuyō desu.) popular construction, not the only one but a popular one, right?
Natsuko: Yes, yes.
Peter: Okay, and lastly we have
Natsuko: 今度 (kondo)
Peter: And this is
Natsuko: Next time.
Peter: This time or next time.
Natsuko: Yes, both meanings. (slow)こんど (kondo)
Peter: And one time fast.
Natsuko: 今度 (kondo)
Peter: For example, in the dialogue we said
Natsuko: また今度 (mata kondo)
Peter: Now they both invited each other to do things.
Natsuko: Uhoo…
Peter: And it didn’t work out so in this sense, また今度 (mata kondo) means next time.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: The literal translation, this time coming up.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: Because the characters are this and time.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: So it’s actually this time approaching which when we translate into English with the nuance gets next time.
Natsuko: Next time.
Peter: Right, Natsuko?
Natsuko: Yes, and usually used in occasions that you don’t want to define when.
Peter: I see.
Natsuko: So 今度 (kondo) can mean anytime, you know, anytime next.
Peter: Yeah, it leaves open many possibilities and opportunities that are vague.
Natsuko: Right, right it is.

Outro

Peter: Well that’s going to do it for today.
Natsuko: じゃあ、また明日ね。(Jā, mata ashita ne.)
Peter: See you tomorrow.
