(Ima nan-ji desu ka.)
PETER: What time is it now?
(Jū ni-ji han desu.)
NATSUKO: It’s 12:30.

PETER: How about Indian food?
(Ii desu ne.)
NATSUKO: That sounds good.
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Peter: Okay, great dialogue, great dialogue. There is so much in there that we got to break down and give to you.
Natsuko: Okay.
Peter: Now first we are going to start off with a new vocabulary word which is
Natsuko: 半 (han)
Peter: And what does this mean?
Natsuko: Half.
Peter: Yes. Give it to us one more time.
Natsuko: 半 (han)
Peter: Break it down.
Natsuko: (slow)はん (han)
Peter: And one time fast.
Natsuko: 半 (han)
Peter: Okay, now used with time, what does this become?
Natsuko: Half past…
Peter: Yes. So in the dialogue we had
Natsuko: 12時半 (jū ni-ji han)
Peter: Which is
Natsuko: Half past 12.
Peter: Yeah how about 1:30. How can we say 1:30?
Natsuko: 1時半 (ichi-ji han)
Peter: Yep, half past 1. Okay, give us 2:30
Natsuko: 2時半 (ni-ji han)
Peter: Yes, and you get the idea that this is how it continues on. Next point of interest we have is
Natsuko: 何時に (nan-ji ni)
Peter: Yes. One more time.
Natsuko: 何時に (nan-ji ni)
Peter: Break it down.
Peter: And one time fast.
Natsuko: 何時に (nan-ji ni)
Peter: And what does this mean?
Natsuko: At what time.
Peter: Yes, get out the pen, write it down, get a tattoo of this one.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: Write on your forum, this is a phrase that is indispensable. Always paired with time is
Natsuko: に (ni)
Peter: Yes, in the sentence we have
(O-hiru o nan-ji ni tabemasu ka.)
Peter: Yes, at what time will we eat lunch?
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: Natsuko, can you say I will eat lunch at 2?
(Watashi wa o-hiru o ni-ji ni tabemasu.)
Peter: Yes. (Mō ichi-do onegai shimasu. Yukkuri onegai shimasu.)
(Watashi wa o-hiru o ni-ji ni tabemasu.)
Peter: Yes, see the time, give us the time one more time.
Natsuko: 2時 (ni-ji)
Peter: And then what is it marked by
(Ni-ji ni tabemasu.) Okay, remember this one. Always with the time, we get
Natsuko: に (ni)
Peter: に (ni)
Natsuko: You need this expression to make appointments.
Peter: Oh, yes. You need this for lots of things. Okay, so speaking of eating at 2 o’ clock, the next point we would like to make is
Natsuko: What are we going to eat?
Peter: Yes, and how do we say that?
(Nani o tabemasu ka.)
Peter: Yes, we can also say 何を何時に食べますか (nani o nan-ji ni tabemasu ka), right?
Natsuko: Yes, we can put that together.
Peter: Yes. At what time and what will we eat?
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: Okay, now remember, whatever we are eating gets marked with
Natsuko: を (o)
Peter: を (o). So okay Natsuko, what do you say we do some practice?
Natsuko: Okay.

Lesson focus

Peter: Now I have a great situation for you, almost too good for you.
Natsuko: What, what!
Peter: Okay, let’s imagine for practice sake that I am your personal chef.
Natsuko: Wow!
Peter: Yes Natsuko, it’s nice to be rich, yes, but on the bad side, I am not that good of a cook. So you will probably regret it. Okay, but for practice sake…
Natsuko: Okay.
Peter: Let’s pretend that I am your cook. So instead of calling you さん (san), right, what name do we use?
Natsuko: Oh yes, umm let’s use 様 (sama).
Peter: One more time, break it down.
Natsuko: (slow)さま (sama)
Peter: And one time fast.
Natsuko: 様 (sama)
Peter: Now what is 様 (sama)?
Natsuko: It’s the utmost polite form for さん (san).
Peter: Yes, now さん (san) is polite, right?
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: So in our show, we are very casual. So I will say Natsuko but in a formal sense, you would be 川本さん (Kawamoto-san), right?
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: Now I am your personal chef. So 川本様 (Kawamoto-sama).
Natsuko: Huh!
Peter: I thought you’d like that. Okay, so 川本様 (Kawamoto-sama).
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: Today I will be taking your food order for the day.
Natsuko: Okay.
Peter: How does that sound?
Natsuko: Nice.
Peter: Right. You wake up to order your food and then eat all day.
Natsuko: Oh I dream of those days.
Peter: Okay, so let’s move on to the conversation.
Natsuko: Okay.
Peter: So here is the situation. I am the Head Chef. I will be taking 川本様 (Kawamoto-sama)’s order for the day. Okay?
Natsuko: Okay.
Peter: So pay attention. We are going to ask for the food and the time. (Kawamoto-sama, ohayō gozaimasu. Kyō no asagohan, nani o tabemasu ka.)
(Kyō wa pan o tabemasu.)
(Nan-ji ni tabemasu ka.)
(Hachi-ji ni tabemasu.)
(Kyō no o-hirugohan, nani o tabemasu ka.)
(Rāmen o tabemasu.)
(Nan-ji ni tabemasu ka.)
(Jū ni-ji ni tabemasu.)
(Kyō no bangohan, nani o tabemasu ka.)
(O-sushi o tabemasu.)
(Nan-ji ni tabemasu ka.)
(Roku-ji han ni tabemasu.)
Peter: Okay, so Natsuko, how does it feel to be rich?
Natsuko: Umm nice.
Peter: Okay, so you gave us. What were the food items you gave us?
Natsuko: Oh yes, パン (pan).
Peter: Break it down.
Natsuko: (slow)ぱん (pan)
Peter: And one time fast.
Natsuko: パン (pan)
Peter: And what’s this?
Natsuko: Bread.
Peter: Bread yes and it also refers, like rolls with something inside of it.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: So although it’s – it’s not just bread. It kind of refers to a wide variety of things with bread.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: And what time were you eating?
Natsuko: 8時 (hachi-ji)
Peter: Which is
Natsuko: 8 o’ clock.
Peter: Yes. How about lunch? What will you eat for lunch?
Peter: One more time.
Peter: Break it down.
Peter: And one time fast.
Peter: And what’s this?
Natsuko: Noodles.
Peter: Yes, noodles like a soup, a big bowl of noodles.
Natsuko: Yes I highly recommend you to try this whenever you come to Japan because it’s a really popular food in Japan, Ramen.
Peter: Yes it’s very, very good. Well I think we are going to have to do a whole 10 shows on this.
Natsuko: Right.
Peter: Okay, we better get off Ramen before we get stuck and what time were you eating?
Natsuko: 12時 (jū ni-ji)
Peter: Which is
Natsuko: 12 o’ clock.
Peter: Okay, and then lastly we had dinner. What will you have for dinner?
Natsuko: お寿司 (o-sushi)
Peter: Yes, and at what time?
Natsuko: 6時半 (roku-ji han)
Peter: Okay, next point and today’s main focus, which is
Peter: Okay. Now this is the negative polite form.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: In question form. Now what does this mean?
Natsuko: Literally it’s won’t you eat something, something.
Peter: Okay, so in this case, we had – can you give us the Japanese?
(Nihon ryōri o tabemasen ka.)
Peter: Okay. So won’t you eat Japanese food?
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: So that’s what it literally means but what’s the implication?
Natsuko: It’s like why don’t we eat Japanese food?
Peter: Yes, that’s the implication. When you want to ask somebody to do something or invite someone to do something, the way you do it is by asking in this form.
Natsuko: Yes, in a negative way.
Peter: Yes, won’t you?
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: In the sentence, I said 私は日本料理が好きです。(Watashi wa Nihon ryōri ga suki desu.) So I like it, I want to eat it. So I invited Natsuko to eat it.
Natsuko: Yes. It’s nearly like let’s eat Japanese food.
Peter: Yes, but it’s a little more crafty.
Natsuko: But it’s more polite. Yes.
Peter: You know it’s kind of that unspoken etiquette.
Natsuko: Yes, very peculiar to Japanese I guess.
Peter: So I invited by saying (Nihon ryōri o tabemasen ka), which if you cut through it all, I like it, I want to eat it, let’s go eat it. That’s kind of in there.
Natsuko: Yes, yes, yes.
Peter: Now what did you say, Natsuko?
(Sō desu ne…)
Peter: Okay, remember, again we introduced many meanings of this word. One was to bite time when you are thinking hmm….
Natsuko: Right.
Peter: One was agreement.
Natsuko: Yes.
(Sō desu ne.) So we are biting time, we have agreement and now what is this one. Give it to us one more time.
(Sō desu ne…)
Peter: Now this one is
Natsuko: Hmm…
Peter: Kind of rebuffing.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: Very polite way. This one is a very interesting way of rebuffing someone.
Natsuko: Uhoo…
Peter: It’s kind of like hmm.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: Close to biting time but in this one, the nuance of no…
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: Is implied.
Natsuko: Yes, but I don’t really want to say no directly to you.
Peter: Yes.
Natsuko: So that’s why I am kind of pretending to evaluate your suggestion.
Peter: Yes, again biting time but this one has the added implication of a, ah. Okay, a little strongly direct but again yes, it’s a great one. It can be used in so many situations.
Natsuko: Yes, right.
Peter: And this is a very important one. Okay, then, so she rebuffed and then she tried to invite me.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: What did you say?
(Watashi wa Itaria ryōri ga suki desu. Itaria ryōri o tabemasen ka.)
Peter: Okay, and this time, won’t she eat Italian?
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: Meaning come on, let’s go eat Italian. What’s added in there is your desire.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: So when you ask someone ませんか (masen ka) inside of that is your own desire to do it, right.
Natsuko: Yes. You are right. So kind of suggesting your idea.
Peter: Yes.
Natsuko: In a very polite way.
Peter: Yes, very, very polite way. Okay, then we have our すごい (sugoi) acting ability where we are fighting a bit. Notice again the intonation, we will give you the intonation one more time.
(Itaria ryōri mo monosugoku oishii desu yo.)
Peter: Yes, and now we’ve had many questions about this よ (yo). Now this よ (yo) adds emphasis.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: It’s an emphasizer.
Natsuko: Yes, it’s kind of stressing.
Peter: Stressing what you want to say.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: In this case, it’s respectively stressing our opinions.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: I think Japanese food is really good.
Natsuko: I think Italian is really good.
Peter: So as you can see, the よ (yo) is an emphasizer. Okay, then finally we had
Peter: Yes, and now this one is again after – what comes after the は (wa) is all inferred.
(Dō desu ka.)
Peter: Yes, is inferred.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: But again since we are talking – we are talking about food and what to eat, we can understand this.
Natsuko: Uhoo.
Peter: Again this は (wa) is just really, really useful.
Natsuko: Useful on many occasions.
Peter: Yes, especially when you forget the words how to ask.
Natsuko: Yeah.
Peter: When I first came here, I still forgot the word for where, what or something. So I would just say は (wa) and let the Japanese person figure out what I wanted to say. Then again, I never really ate where I wanted to…Okay, enough about that.
Natsuko: Okay.
Peter: So again today’s point, the main focus we want to get is the negative for inviting which has in it your desire. (Kyō sushi o tabemasen ka.)
(Ii desu ne.)
Peter: Okay, looks like I will be dining with Natsuko today.

Outro

(Mata ashita ne.)
