さくら (Sakura) : 多いですね。(Ōi desu ne.)
Peter: Okay, very, very nice. As always, now we are going to have Sakura and her lovely voice read the dialogue and I will do the translation. Here we go.

PETER: My Father, my mother, my older brother, my older sister, my younger brother and myself.
さくら (Sakura) : 多いですね。(Ōi desu ne.)
SAKURA: That's a lot.
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Peter: Okay, great job Sakura, wonderful. Now what we are going to do is we have a lot of new words, right Sakura.
Sakura: Yes.
Peter: Okay, so we are going to get right in and we are going to break these words down because this is some important stuff we are covering today, right Sakura?
Sakura: Yes.
Peter: Okay, without further adieu, here we go. First word please Sakura.
Sakura: ご家族 (go-kazoku)
Peter: Very nice. Okay, what does this mean?
Sakura: It’s family.
Peter: Okay, now you said, can you say it one more time, please?
Sakura: ご家族 (go-kazoku)
Peter: Okay, what is the word in there?
Sakura: It is ご (go) and 家族 (kazoku)
Peter: Okay.
Sakura: And 家族 (kazoku) is family.
Peter: Okay, very nice. Okay, so can you break down this word for us?
Sakura: (slow)家族 (kazoku)
Peter: And one time fast.
Sakura: 家族 (kazoku)
Peter: Okay, and the word for family is again
Sakura: 家族 (kazoku)
Peter: And the prefix ご (go), what is that?
Sakura: It makes the word polite.
Peter: Okay, very nice. So Sakura, would I use this talking about my family to make it polite?
Sakura: No. When you want to talk about the other person’s family, you put ご (go).
Peter: Yes, only when you are talking about other people’s family, you use this.
Sakura: Yes.
Peter: When you are talking about your own family, don’t use it. Okay, excellent. Next word.
Sakura: 何人 (nan-nin)
Peter: Okay, and what is this?
Sakura: How many people.
Peter: Very nice. Now Sakura, there are two words in there, right?
Sakura: Yes, 何人 (nan-nin)
Peter: Okay. And what does this mean, Sakura?
Sakura: How many people.
Peter: Yes, again we have this word 何 (nan) and this can mean either what or how depending on the case. Don’t worry. We will get used to it. Not a problem. Okay, so that’s the first word. Then the second word is
Sakura: 人 (nin)
Peter: And this is the counter for people. In Japanese, they have counters for many things. For example, round things, long thin things. They have many different kinds of counters and this could be a difficult point in Japanese but don’t worry about that. Sakura is here and she is going to make it really easy for you and when we are done, it’s going to be a piece of cake.
Sakura: 朝飯前 (asameshimae)
Peter: Wait! What was that word?
Sakura: 朝飯前 (asameshimae)
Peter: What’s that?
Sakura: Piece of cake, ね (ne).
Peter: Yes okay, can you break it down for us?
Sakura: (slow)あさめしまえ (asameshimae)
Peter: Very nice. One more time, a little slower by syllable.
Sakura: (slow)あさめしまえ (asameshimae)
Peter: Very nice. One time fast.
Sakura: 朝飯前 (asameshimae)
Peter: Okay, and there are three words in here, right?
Sakura: Yes.
Peter: What are the words?
Sakura: 朝 (asa)
Peter: 朝 (asa). And what’s 朝 (asa)?
Sakura: Morning.
Peter: Morning.
Sakura: Yes.
Peter: Okay.
Sakura: 飯 (meshi)
Peter: One more time please, slower.
Sakura: (slow)飯 (meshi)
Peter: And what’s this?
Sakura: Meal.
Peter: Meal, okay. Morning meal. And last one.
Sakura: (slow)まえ (mae)
Peter: One more time, fast.
Sakura: 前 (mae)
Peter: And what’s this?
Sakura: Before
Peter: Put it all together.
Sakura: Before breakfast.
Peter: Yes, so meaning you can take care of it before breakfast. So this is a piece of cake in Japanese, right?
Sakura: Yes.
Peter: And very useful, right Sakura?
Sakura: Yes.
Peter: Because Sakura is going to make Japanese and learning Japanese
Sakura: 朝飯前 (asameshimae)
Peter: Piece of cake. Okay and speaking of a piece of cake, let’s get back to the counting. So for people, we have this counter which is
Sakura: 人 (nin)
Peter: Okay, so let’s just give a few examples. In the dialogue we said
Sakura: 6人 (roku-nin)
Peter: And this is
Sakura: Six people.
Peter: Yeah, oh I see, so we have the number six.
Sakura: Yes.
Peter: And the counter for people.
Sakura: Uhoo.
Peter: Okay, so let’s say I know some big families.
Sakura: Right.
Peter: So how will we say 10 people?
Sakura: 10人 (jū-nin)
Peter: Okay. Just 10 plus the counter.
Sakura: Yes.
Peter: All right. How about 9 people?
Sakura: 9人 (kyū-nin)
Peter: Oh, this is great.
Sakura: Yes.
Peter: Eight people.
Sakura: 8人 (hachi-nin)
Peter: Seven people.
Sakura: 7人 (nana-nin)
Peter: Six people.
Sakura: 6人 (roku-nin)
Peter: Five people.
Sakura: 5人 (go-nin)
Peter: Four people.
Sakura: 4人 (yo-nin)
Peter: Wait! Stop right there. I heard you say, what was that, break it down slow.
Sakura: (slow)よにん (yo-nin)
Peter: But I thought the word for four was よん (yon)
Sakura: Yes.
Peter: What happened to the ‘n’?
Sakura: In this case, ‘n’ drops
Peter: Ah drop the ‘n’?
Sakura: Yes.
Peter: Okay.
Sakura: And よにん (yo-nin)
Peter: よにん (yo-nin). Got it. Yeah, so just watch out for that out there. Okay, keep going, please.
Sakura: 3人 (san-nin)
Peter: Okay. Then we have
Sakura: ふたり (futari)
Peter: Hah! What was that?
Sakura: ふたり (futari)
Peter: No ににん (ni-nin).
Sakura: No…
Peter: What happened?
Sakura: It’s irregular.
Peter: Irregular.
Sakura: Yes.
Peter: Yes. It was just – I knew you guys out there, it was just a matter of time before the irregular monster reared its head right. Okay, so can you give us the word for two people again?
Sakura: ふたり (futari)
Peter: Okay, one more time break it down by syllable.
Sakura: (slow)ふたり (futari)
Peter: And one time fast.
Sakura: 2人 (futari)
Peter: Okay, and now the word for one person.
Sakura: 1人 (hitori)
Peter: Again irregular. Okay, break it down for us please.
Sakura: (slow)ひとり (hitori)
Peter: And one time fast.
Sakura: 1人 (hitori)
Peter: Yes. Umm the word for one person.
Sakura: 1人 (hitori)
Peter: And two people.
Sakura: 2人 (futari)
Peter: Are very important because you will use these quite a bit, right Sakura?
Sakura: Yes. So you get used to it.
Peter: Yeah, definitely.
Sakura: Yeah.
Peter: So it’s not a problem. As we said
Sakura: 朝飯前 (asameshimae)
Peter: No problem, just two irregulars, come on. Two out of as far as you can count too, that’s not bad, right?
Sakura: Right.
Peter: Okay. Now we are going to move on to some more vocabulary. Now this vocabulary is a little tricky, right Sakura?
Sakura: Uhoo.
Peter: The reason it’s tricky is because in Japanese, it’s a very respectful language so when you speak about families, you use some words for your own family and some for others.
Sakura: Yes.
Peter: Okay. What we are going to give you today is the words that you use when speaking about your family. Right, Sakura?
Sakura: Yes.
VOCAB LIST
Peter: Okay, so give us the first one.
Sakura: 父 (chichi)
Peter: And what’s this?
Sakura: Father.
Peter: Very nice. One more time.
Sakura: 父 (chichi)
Peter: Break it down.
Sakura: (slow)ちち (chichi)
Peter: One time fast.
Sakura: 父 (chichi)
Peter: Very nice. Next we have
Sakura: 母 (haha)
Peter: Mother. One more time
Sakura: 母 (haha)
Peter: Break it down.
Sakura: (slow)はは (haha)
Peter: And one time fast
Sakura: 母 (haha)
Peter: Very nice. Next we have
Sakura: 妹 (imōto)
Peter: Okay. This is “younger sister.”
Sakura: Yes.
Peter: One more time.
Sakura: 妹 (imōto)
Peter: Break it down.
Sakura: (slow)いもうと (imōto)
Peter: And one time fast
Sakura: 妹 (imōto)
Peter: Now everybody out there, there is an extended vowel inside of this. Give it to us one more time, exaggerated.
Sakura: 妹 (imōto)
Peter: Yes. You want to hold it right in the middle there. Hold it, make it into a long vowel, right?
Sakura: Yes.
Peter: Okay, next.
Sakura: 兄 (ani)
Peter: Older brother.
Sakura: 兄 (ani)
Peter: Break it down.
Sakura: (slow)あに (ani)
Peter: One time fast
Sakura: 兄 (ani)
Peter: Okay, next.
Sakura: 姉 (ane)
Peter: Older sister. One more time.
Sakura: 姉 (ane)
Peter: Break it down.
Sakura: (slow)あね (ane)
Peter: One time fast.
Sakura: 姉 (ane)
Peter: Yes. Next.
Sakura: 弟 (otōto)
Peter: Younger brother.
Sakura: 弟 (otōto)
Peter: Break it down.
Sakura: (slow)おとうと (otōto)
Peter: One time fast.
Sakura: 弟 (otōto)
Peter: Okay, and again, this one also has the extended vowel. So please exaggerate it for us.
Sakura: 弟 (otōto)
Peter: Very nice. We have one more point before we cut out today as we are running a little short on time and this is an important one. Can you give us the members of the family one more time, please Sakura?
Sakura: 父と母と妹と私です。(Chichi to haha to imōto to watashi desu.)
Peter: Okay, Sakura. You told us about 父 (chichi), you told us about 母 (haha), you told us about 妹 (imōto). What is this little word you keep putting in between them?
Sakura: と (to)
Peter: One more time.
Sakura: と (to)
Peter: と (to). Okay and what’s this?
Sakura: It’s and
Peter: Yes, a very important word. Right, Sakura?
Sakura: Yes.
Peter: For example, if we want to say Peter and Sakura.
Sakura: ピーターとさくら (Pītā to Sakura)
Peter: Is the order important? You know in English, it’s very important to say the other people first and then yours last. How about in Japanese, order doesn’t matter so much?
Sakura: Not as much as in English.
Peter: Yes okay, and again for everyone out there, don’t trust my English because it’s been a while. All right, okay and last one.
Sakura: 多い (ōi)
Peter: Okay and what’s this?
Sakura: A lot.
Peter: A lot, many right?
Sakura: Many.
Peter: Okay, and one more time, please.
Sakura: 多い (ōi)
Peter: Break it down.
Sakura: (slow)おおい (ōi)
Peter: One time fast.
Sakura: 多い (ōi)
Peter: Yes again, this one you kind of hold, right Sakura?
Sakura: Yes.
Peter: One more time.
Sakura: 多い (ōi)

Sakura: Yes. ありがとうございます。(Arigatō gozaimasu.)
Peter: Yes okay, everybody. So that’s going to be it. And we will see you tomorrow.
Sakura: また明日ね。(Mata ashita ne.)
