Take: はい。今日はモテモテたけさんでいってみます。残念だけど、よしはダメだと思います。(Hai. Kyō wa motemote Take-san de itte mimasu. Zannen da kedo, Yoshi wa dame da to omoimasu.)
Peter: And Yoshi doesn’t have it. You know what, let’s back on track, back on track. Let’s try to do some of these vocab words here. Yoshi-san, first word.
VOCAB LIST
Yoshi: ファン (fan)
Peter: Fan.
Yoshi: (slow) ふぁん (fan) (natural speed) ファン (fan)
Peter: Sample sentence, please.
Yoshi: 私は Japanesepod101のファンです。(Watashi wa Japanīzupoddo ichi maru ichi no fan desu.)
Peter: I am a fan of japanesepod101.com. Yoshi-san, now that’s a good sample sentence. Our marketing people are going to be very happy with that. Okay, next we have
Take: 変わっている (kawatte iru)
Peter: Strange.
Take: (slow) かわっている (kawatte iru) (natural speed) 変わっている (kawatte iru)
Peter: Now Yoshi-san, this is based off of what verb?
Yoshi: 変わる (kawaru)
Peter: To change. Now it’s in the present progressive form here, 変わっている (kawatte iru) but again in Japanese, this represents a state, the state of being changed. This is again the literal meaning. Now when we interpret this, it’s interpreted as being strange. He is in a state of being changed. He is strange and if you have lots of friends like I do, this will come in very handy. Take-san, sample sentence please.
Take: ピーターさんとよしさんは変わっています。(Pītā-san to Yoshi-san wa kawatte imasu.)
Peter: Peter and Yoshi are strange.
Yoshi: あれ、たけさん、一人忘れていませんか。(Are, Take-san, hitori wasurete imasen ka.)
Take: いえいえ、いえいえ。(Ie ie, ie ie.)
Peter: Did you forget somebody, Take-san?
Yoshi: 三人じゃないですか。(San-nin ja nai desu ka.)
Take: いや、僕は普通ですから。(Iya, boku wa futsū desu kara.)
Peter: Do you believe this guy today? 信じられないですね。(Shinjirarenai desu ne.)
Take: 続けてください。(Tsuzukete kudasai.)
Peter: Thank you. Thank you master, thank you before…Oh boy! Next we have
Yoshi: 先ほど (sakihodo)
Peter: Some time ago.
Yoshi: (slow) さきほど (sakihodo) (natural speed) 先ほど (sakihodo)
Peter: For me, this usually means a short period of time ago relatively recently. Yoshi-san, can you help us understand this word? How long would you say you can use 先ほど (sakihodo)?
Yoshi: You should be talking about something that just happened like a really short time ago but it could go up to like a few hours possibly like if you all know what you are talking about.
Peter: The key here is a really short time, 先ほど電話がありました (sakihodo denwa ga arimashita). You had a call a few minutes ago. A relatively short time in the past and as Yoshi said, a few hour stops. Yoshi-san, example please.
Yoshi: ピーターさん、先ほどお電話がありましたよ。(Pītā-san, sakihodo o-denwa ga arimashita yo.)
Peter: Peter, you had a call a few minutes ago. Take-san, can you give us one?
Yoshi: たけさん、ピーターさんは?(Take-san, Pītā-san wa?)
Take: あっ、先ほど出かけましたけど。(A, sakihodo dekakemashita kedo.)
Peter: One more time.
Yoshi: タケさん、ピーターさんは?(Take-san, Pītā-san wa?)
Peter: Take, where is Peter?
Take: あっ、先ほど出かけましたけど。(A, sakihodo dekakemashita kedo.)
Peter: He’d left a few minutes ago. Next.
Take: 現れる (arawareru)
Peter: To appear, to become visible.
Take: (slow) あらわれる (arawareru) (natural speed) 現れる (arawareru)
雨の後虹が現れた。(Ame no ato niji ga arawareta.)
Peter: A rainbow appeared after the rain. Next.
Yoshi: 埋め合わせ (umeawase)
Peter: Compensation.
Yoshi: (slow) うめあわせ (umeawase) (natural speed) 埋め合わせ (umeawase)
約束を破った埋め合わせをする。(Yakusoku o yabutta umeawase o suru.)
Peter: To compensate after breaking a promise.
Take: バンド (bando)
Peter: Banned.
Take: (slow) ばんど (bando) (natural speed) バンド (bando)
Peter: Of course from the English word band. Then we have related to band
Take: ライブ (raibu)
Peter: Live.
Take: (slow) らいぶ (raibu) (natural speed) ライブ (raibu)
友達のバンドのライブを見に行く。 (Tomodachi no bando no raibu o mi ni iku.)
Peter: I will go to watch my friend’s band’s live show. Next.
Yoshi: 乱暴 (ranbō)
Peter: Violent, rude.
Yoshi: (slow) らんぼう (ranbō) (natural speed) 乱暴 (ranbō)
君の言動は乱暴だ。(Kimi no gendō wa ranbō da.)
Peter: Your behavior is rude and last one.
Yoshi: 喜ぶ (yorokobu)
Peter: To be happy.
Yoshi: (slow) よろこぶ (yorokobu) (natural speed) 喜ぶ (yorokobu)
Peter: And in the dialogue Yoshi-san, what do we have?
Yoshi: 喜んで (yorokonde)
Peter: Now this expression means with pleasure, gladly. Break it down.
Yoshi: (slow) よろこんで (yorokonde) (natural speed) 喜んで (yorokonde)
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Peter: Okay, now let’s take a look at some of the expressions in today’s dialogue. First expression.
Yoshi: 知らない人が現れて、つまり、ごめんなさい。(Shiranai hito ga arawarete, tsumari, gomen nasai.)
Peter: A person I didn’t know appeared. In short, I am sorry. Now the first part of this is, Yoshi-san.
Yoshi: 知らない (shiranai)
Peter: To not know, followed by
Yoshi: 人 (hito)
Peter: To not know a person, literally. Again we interpret here, a person I don’t know interprets again to a stranger. This is marked by the particle
Yoshi: が (ga)
Peter: Followed by
Yoshi: 現れて (arawarete)
Peter: To appear. Stranger appears. Again we have to interpret. A stranger appeared, followed by
Yoshi: つまり (tsumari)
Peter: In short. Use when you wrap up things if you have a long explanation and you get to your main point, you can say
Yoshi: つまり (tsumari)
Peter: Followed by
Yoshi: ごめんなさい (gomen nasai)
Peter: In short, I am sorry. So this is used because she is trying to explain about the situation that happened previously. He went to the house, she was short with him. He came back. So she felt bad about this and now she is explaining her reasoning. Okay, so she introduces a topic with
“a stranger appeared.” The inferred part and that’s why I did that. In short, I am sorry and again in Japanese, the inferred part is not put in here. In English, we do this too especially when you are apologizing to someone, you have to get very creative and you don’t want to say it again. So a lot’s read in between the lines. Okay, this is followed by, Take-san.
Take: いいえ、こちらこそ。(Iie, kochira koso.)
Peter: No, same here. He has the same feeling that there was kind of a misunderstanding and the reason being
Take: 乱暴にドアを叩いて申し訳ございません。(Ranbō ni doa o tataite mōshiwake gozaimasen.)
Peter: I am sorry for pounding the door. First word is, Yoshi-san.
Yoshi: 乱暴 (ranbō)
Peter: Violent, marked by the particle
Yoshi: に (ni)
Peter: So we have “violently.” We are followed by
Yoshi: ドア (doa)
Peter: And this is marked by
Yoshi: を (o)
Peter: Followed by
Yoshi: 叩いて (tataite)
Peter: Te-form of
Yoshi: 叩く (tataku)
Peter: To hit. So again we interpret, I violently hit the door, followed by
Yoshi: 申し訳ございません (mōshiwake gozaimasen)
Peter: I am sorry. I am sorry for pounding on your door. It’s how we interpret the sentence 申し訳ございません (mōshiwake gozaimasen). This is the Japanese way of saying I am sorry in an extremely polite manner. All right, so as we said, we are running out of time. That’s going to do it for today. So much more to cover but inside the PDF, we will have a write up about what we covered today. Again some really useful phrases here. Right, Yoshi-san?
Yoshi: Yes, that’s right.

Outro

Peter: I personally like つまり (tsumari). つまり (tsumari) we are out of time. That’s going to do for today.
Yoshi: またね。(Mata ne.)
