Lesson Transcript

Culture shapes language, and language shapes culture. There aren't many languages where we find more evidence of this than in Japanese. Let's begin our study of the language with a few high-frequency phrases.
You’ll find them useful in almost any conversation. And, by studying them, you’ll also learn something about how Japanese people view themselves and their roles in society.
Specifically, this learning path focuses on first meetings, and you’ll learn how to introduce yourself and how to greet and address others.
As you learn these language basics, you’ll also be learning related customs and cultural points. Among other things, you’ll learn how to bow and what to do when you receive a Japanese business card.
This learning path lays out everything you need to know in a simple, step-by-step fashion. Simply follow each item in the order.
The learning path consists of a mixture of audio and video lessons and activities. You should watch or listen to the multimedia lessons 2-3 times. Use the lesson support material to help you review what you’ve studied. When you come to the activities, please read the included instructions. They will help you make the most of the lesson.
For the average learner, this learning path should take 3-4 weeks to complete.
In this pathway, you'll hear a dialogue between three characters; Shiori Kawaguchi, Keith Johnson, and Nicole Roberts. The conversation will take place at a hospital. They will speak formal Japanese.
