Intro

Jessi: Hi everyone, ジェシーです (Jeshī desu)。Jessi here!
Tomoyuki: こんにちは (Kon'nichiwa)、Tomoyuki です (desu)。
Jessi: Where in Japan Are You Now? Thanks as always for joining us! Tomoyuki, what did we learn in the last lesson, Lesson 12?
Tomoyuki: In the last lesson, we learned how to respond to the question, do you have [blank]? We could say はい、あります (hai, arimasu), “yes, I do”, or いいえ、ありません (Īe, arimasen), “No, I don't”.
Jessi: That's right. And in this lesson, you'll learn how to ask where someone is, and say where someone is. For example, asking, "Where are you?" on the phone.
Tomoyuki: That's right. What's happening in the conversation?
Jessi: Masato and Taylor are talking on the phone, and Masato is asking Taylor where he is.
Tomoyuki: Let's listen to the conversation.
Dialogue
テイラー: もしもし?
Taylor: Moshimoshi?
まさと: テイラーさん!すみません。
Masato: Teirā-san! Sumimasen.
テイラー: だいじょうぶ です。
Taylor: Daijōbudesu.
まさと: いま、どこ に いますか。
Masato: Ima, doko ni imasu ka.
テイラー: いま、ぼく と ちえみ と サラ は マクドナルド に います。
Taylor: Ima, boku to Chiemi to sara wa Makudonarudo ni imasu.
まさと: マクドナルド?
Masato: Makudonarudo?
Jessi: Let’s listen to the conversation again slowly.
テイラー: もしもし?
Taylor: Moshimoshi?
まさと: テイラーさん!すみません。
Masato: Teirā-san! Sumimasen.
テイラー: だいじょうぶ です。
Taylor: Daijōbudesu.
まさと: いま、どこ に いますか。
Masato: Ima, doko ni imasu ka.
テイラー: いま、ぼく と ちえみ と サラ は マクドナルド に います。
Taylor: Ima, boku to Chiemi to sara wa Makudonarudo ni imasu.
まさと: マクドナルド?
Masato: Makudonarudo?
Jessi: Now let’s listen to it with the translation.
テイラー: もしもし?
Taylor: Moshimoshi?
Jessi: Hello?
まさと: テイラーさん!すみません。
Masato: Teirā-san! Sumimasen.
Jessi: Taylor! Sorry.
テイラー: だいじょうぶ です。
Taylor: Daijōbudesu.
Jessi: It's fine.
まさと: いま、どこ に いますか。
Masato: Ima, doko ni imasu ka.
Jessi: Where are you now?
テイラー: いま、ぼく と ちえみ と サラ は マクドナルド に います。
Taylor: Ima, boku to Chiemi to sara wa Makudonarudo ni imasu.
Jessi: Chiemi, Sara, and I are at McDonald's right now.
まさと: マクドナルド?
Masato: Makudonarudo?
Jessi: McDonald's?
Vocabulary and Phrase Usage
Jessi: So, Masato finally showed up!
Tomoyuki: Yes, I think it took him longer than expected. He said すみません~ (sumimasen~).
Jessi: Yes, he apologizes for being late. But Taylor says it's okay, he says...
Tomoyuki: 大丈夫(だいじょうぶ)です. (Daijōbu desu.)
Jessi: It's fine! Anyway, Taylor told Masato that he's at... McDonalds! Or.. should I say... マクドナルド (Makudonarudo)... hmm, that's hard to say!
Tomoyuki: Is it? Hmm, yeah, I guess it's quite different.
Jessi: Yes, very different from the original name! As you probably already know, listeners, this is very common...
Tomoyuki: Japanese pronunciation of foreign words?
Jessi: Yes.. Japanese has only a small set of sounds it can use to represent sounds from other languages, so loanwords from other languages often sound very different. Tomoyuki, can you give us the pronunciation of McDonalds again?
Tomoyuki: OK. マクドナルド (Makudonarudo).
Jessi: マクドナルド (Makudonarudo). So, just something to keep in mind... if you come to Japan and ask for plain old "McDonalds", you might not be understood!
Tomoyuki: Good point.
Jessi: Okay, so let's take a look at some of our other words and phrases.
Tomoyuki: Sure. We had the phrase もしもし (moshimoshi).
Jessi: Ah, this is a good one! もしもし (moshimoshi).
Tomoyuki: This means "hello" when talking on the phone.
Jessi: Right, when you answer the phone, you say もしもし (moshimoshi)?
Tomoyuki: Taylor said this when he answered the phone.
Jessi: Please note that you can only use this on the phone!
Jessi: And one more word we'll see later on in the lesson is いま (ima).
Tomoyuki: いま (Ima). This is review, and it means "now" or "right now".
Jessi: Yes. いま (Ima). Okay, and with that, let's move on to the lesson focus!
Grammar Point
Jessi: In this lesson, you'll learn how to ask where someone is, and say where someone is. So we have 2 patterns in this lesson.
Tomoyuki: That's right. We'll be using the word います (imasu) in both.
Jessi: います (Imasu). Listeners, do you remember this word from the last season? If you remember, we learned how to talk about the existence of animate objects. That is, people and animals, using います (imasu).
Tomoyuki: Yes, like [person or animal] がいます (ga imasu).
Jessi: We'll be using this same います (imasu) in this lesson. First, let's focus on asking where someone is.
Tomoyuki: Okay! Our pattern for that is... [A]はどこにいますか ([A] wa doko ni imasu ka)。
Jessi: [A]はどこにいますか ([A ] wa doko ni imasu ka)。Let's break it down.
Tomoyuki: [A]は (wa) (Jessi: A, or the person we're talking about) どこに (dokoni) (Jessi: where) いますか (imasu ka)。 (Jessi: is, plus the question marker).
Jessi: So literally, it's like saying “so-and-so, where is?” And of course it means, Where is so-and-so. All right; let's practice putting some names into the pattern.
Tomoyuki: Okay! Here's one. まさとさんはどこにいますか (Masato-san wa doko ni imasu ka)?
Jessi: まさとさんは どこにいますか (Masato-san wa doko ni imasu ka)? Where is Masato?
Tomoyuki: Here's another one. テイラーさんはどこにいますか (Teirā-san wa doko ni imasu ka)。
Jessi: テイラーさんは どこにいますか (Teirā-san wa doko ni imasu ka)。Where is Taylor?
Tomoyuki: So, as you can see, it's [person] plus は、どこにいますか (wa, doko ni imasu ka)?
Jessi: And, as you probably know by now... if it's obvious who you are referring to, like the listener themself, you don't need the “personは (wa)” part.
Tomoyuki: That's right. In the dialogue, when Masato asked Taylor where he was, he said いま、どこにいますか (Ima, doko ni imasu ka)?
Jessi: "Where are you now?" So the meaning becomes "you", in this case. Can we hear it one more time?
Tomoyuki: Sure. いま、どこにいますか (Ima, doko ni imasu ka)? Where are you now?
Jessi: Before we move on to our next pattern, let's practice really quickly.
Tomoyuki: Listeners, how would you say, where is Kaori? Please use the name かおりさん (kaori-san)。
[pause]
Jessi: Remember that the pattern is [person]は (wa)、どこにいますか (doko ni imasu ka)。
[pause]
Jessi: And the answer is...?
Tomoyuki: かおりさんは、どこにいますか (Kaori-san wa, doko ni imasu ka)?
Jessi: Great! Did you get that? Now let's go to our next pattern. This is the response to the question we just saw, "where is so and so?"
Tomoyuki: Yes, and it's [A]は[place]にいます ([A ] wa [place] ni imasu)。
Jessi: So again, that is, [A]は[place]にいます([A ] wa [place] ni imasu) meaning, A is in [place].
Tomoyuki: Let's give an example. 駅(えき) (eki) is "train station" in Japanese. So, we can say... かおりさんは 駅(えき)にいます (Kaori-san wa eki ni imasu.)。
Jessi: Kaori is at the train station. Let's break it down.
Tomoyuki: かおりさん (Kaori-san) (Jessi: Kaori) は えき (wa eki) (Jessi: train station) にいます (ni imasu) (Jessi: is)。
Jessi: So, one more time?
Tomoyuki: かおりさんは 駅(えき)にいます。 (Kaori-san wa eki ni imasu.)
Jessi: Let's do another one.
Tomoyuki: Sure!
Jessi: How about... Taylor is in Japan?
Tomoyuki: Okay. That would be テイラーさんは日本(にほん)にいます (Teirā-san wa Nihon ni imasu.)。
Jessi: テイラーさんは 日本(にほん)にいます。 (Teirā-san wa Nihon ni imasu.) Taylor is in Japan. Listeners, please repeat.
Tomoyuki: テイラーさんは日本(にほん)にいます。 (Teirā-san wa Nihon ni imasu.)
[pause]
Jessi: Okay, great. Let's look at the example of this we had in the dialogue.
Tomoyuki: Sure. Masato asks Taylor, いまどこにいますか (ima doko ni imasu ka)
Jessi: "Where are you now?"
Tomoyuki: And Taylor replies いま、ぼく と ちえみ と サラ は マクドナルド に います (ima, boku to Chiemi to sara wa Makudonarudo ni imasu)。
Jessi: "Chiemi, Sara and I are at McDonald's right now." This is a little long, so let's go through it together.
Tomoyuki: いま (Ima) (Jessi: now)、ぼくと (boku to) (Jessi: I and) ちえみと (Chiemi to) (Jessi: Chiemi and) サラ (Sara) (Jessi: Sarah) は マクドナルド (wa Makudonarudo) (Jessi: McDonalds) に います (ni imasu) (Jessi: are at)。
Jessi: Phew! So, all together, "Chiemi, Sara and I are at McDonald's right now."
Tomoyuki: いま、ぼく と ちえみ と サラ は マクドナルド に います。 (Ima, boku to Chiemi to sara wa Makudonarudo ni imasu.)

Outro

Jessi: Okay! That's a lot of information we covered, isn't it?
Tomoyuki: It sure is!
Tomoyuki: Okay, I think that's all for this lesson.
Jessi: Yes, that's going to do it for now. Thanks for listening!
Tomoyuki: See you all next time. じゃあ、また。 (Jā, mata.)
Jessi: Bye everyone!
