John: Here's the way to say "Hello.” when answering the phone in Japanese.
Risa: [Normal] もしもし (Moshi moshi.)
John: This expression has only one word meaning "hello” on the telephone.
Risa: [Normal] もしもし [Slow] もしもし (moshi moshi)
John: Listen again to the word meaning "Hello."
Risa: [Slow] もしもし [Normal] もしもし
John: Okay, now let's see the way to say "This is Risa."
Risa: [Normal] リサです。(Risa desu.)
John: First is a word meaning "Risa."
Risa: [Normal] リサ [Slow] リサ (Risa)
John: Last is the word meaning "am."
Risa: [Normal] です [Slow] です (desu)
John: Listen again to the phrase meaning "This is Risa."

John: The following is the formal way to say "May I talk to Peter?" or literally “Is Peter there?”

John: Next is the polite name suffix.

John: Last is the question particle.

John: Note the rising intonation. Listen again to the formal phrase meaning "May I talk to Peter?"

John: Finally is a way to say "I'll call again later."
Risa: [Normal] またあとで電話します。(Mata ato de denwa shimasu.)
John: First is a word meaning "again."

John: Next is the word meaning "later."
Risa: [Normal] あとで [Slow] あとで (ato de)
John: Next is the word meaning "phone."

Cultural Insight
John: Now, it's time for a quick cultural insight.
Risa: The expression moshi moshi is very common when you give or receive a call. However, in formal situations like in business, people don't use it. Instead, they say hai or arigatō gozaimasu followed by the company’s name or their family name.
