| Hiroko: Do you remember how to introduce yourself in Japanese? わたしは、ひろこです。 (Watashi wa, Hiroko desu.) In this lesson, you are going to learn this simple and useful sentence structure A は (wa) B です。 (desu.) What is this これは、チョコレートです。 (Kore wa, chokorēto desu.) これ (kore) means this. So これは、チョコレートです。 (Kore wa, chokorēto desu.) means this is chocolate. Okay let’s practice. What is this これは、せんべいです。 (Kore wa, senbei desu.) this is a rice cracker. Next, what is this? これは、あめです。 (Kore wa, ame desu.) This is candy. Okay let me introduce Yuchi. He is going to help me with this lesson. |
| Yuichi: こんにちは、ゆういちです。 (Konnichiwa, Yūichi desu.) よろしくおねがいします。 (Yoroshiku onegai shimasu.) |
| Hiroko: よろしくおねがいします。 (Yoroshiku onegai shimasu.) Yuchi san, which one do you want? |
| Yuichi: I want this one. |
| Hiroko: それは、あめです。 (Sore wa, ame desu.) That’s candy. This is the same sentence structure again here. A is B. Did you notice the different word それ？ (Sore?) それ (sore) means “that”, it’s used to talk about something that’s near the person you are talking to. Yuchi san, are you thirsty? |

| Hiroko: あれは、きっさてんです。 (Are wa, kissaten desu.) That’s coffee shop, let’s go. This is the same sentence structure once again. A is B. The only difference is あれ (are) which means that over there. あれ (are) is used to talk about something that is far from both the speaker and the listener. Okay let’s review これ (kore) それ (sore) and あれ (are) これは、マグカップです。 (Kore wa, magukappu desu.) それは、ミッキーマウスです。 (Sore wa, Mikkīmausu desu.) . |
