Lesson Transcript

Hiroko: Do you remember how to introduce yourself in Japanese? (Watashi wa, Hiroko desu.) In this lesson, you are going to learn this simple and useful sentence structure A は (wa) B です。 (desu.) What is this これは、チョコレートです。 (Kore wa, chokorēto desu.) これ (kore) means this. (Kore wa, chokorēto desu.) means this is chocolate. Okay let’s practice. What is this これは、せんべいです。 (Kore wa, senbei desu.) this is a rice cracker. Next, what is this? (Kore wa, ame desu.) This is candy. Okay let me introduce Yuchi. He is going to help me with this lesson.
(Konnichiwa, Yūichi desu.) (Yoroshiku onegai shimasu.)
(Yoroshiku onegai shimasu.) Yuchi san, which one do you want?
Yuichi: I want this one.
(Sore wa, ame desu.) That’s candy. This is the same sentence structure again here. A is B. Did you notice the different word それ? (Sore?) それ (sore) means “that”, it’s used to talk about something that’s near the person you are talking to. Yuchi san, are you thirsty?
Yuichi: Yes.
(Are wa, kissaten desu.) That’s coffee shop, let’s go. This is the same sentence structure once again. A is B. The only difference is あれ (are) which means that over there. あれ (are) is used to talk about something that is far from both the speaker and the listener. Okay let’s review これ (kore) それ (sore) and あれ (are) これは、マグカップです。 (Kore wa, magukappu desu.) (Sore wa, Mikkīmausu desu.) .
(Are wa, oni desu.)
Hiroko: That’s a monster.

Hi Rachel,

Thank you for posting!

Your choice of the words is really interesting!

I looked up モッコウバラ and found it was beautiful rose☺️

We usually write pronouns like これ, それ and あれ in hiragana.

Keep up the good work:)

Sincerely,

Miho
