Lesson 12.
Ten Kanji.
You can draw kanji for 1, 2, and 3.
Now it's time to add 10 to the mix.
Let’s draw today’s kanji.
The meaning of this kanji is 10.
Now we are going to have a trick for memorizing this kanji in just a minute but let’s first look at the reading.
Remember, there are two readings in Japanese kanji? One is the 音読み (on'yomi) , the On reading and the other one is the 訓読み (kun'yomi) , the Kun reading. The On (On) readings come from Chinese and the Kun readings come from Japanese.
Now, the On (On) reading for this kanji is トウ (tō) Now, let's look at the Kun reading, the Kun (Kun) reading for this kanji is じゅう (jū) .
Now remember the trick that I was telling about? Let’s look at that now.
5 plus 5 is 10!
Now let's look at how to draw this kanji. Pay attention to the stroke order.Left to the right. top to the bottom. Let's try it again. 1, 2.
Now let’s look at some sample words.
Ta-dah!
The On reading for this kanji is tou. Here we have とおか(tōka), which means the 10th day.
Now, the Kun reading for this kanji is ju, we have じゅうがつ (jū-gatsu) which means October.
