Today’s kanji means east.
And you have to use the kanjis that you used in the previous lessons.
Let’s take a look at the kanji.
The meaning of this kanji is east.
We are going to have a trick for memorizing this kanji in just a minute but for now, let’s look at the reading.
Remember, there are two kinds of reading in kanji? One is On reading and the other one is Kun reading. On reading is 音読み (on'yomi) come from Chinese and the Kun reading 訓読み (kun'yomi) come from Japanese.
And the On reading for this kanji is トウ (tō) and the Kun reading for this kanji is ひがし (higashi).
And now remember the trick that I just told you about? Let’s look at that now.
This part is the sun, right? And the other part, remember the first kanji we learned in our lessons? It is a tree. So it’s kind of like you are looking towards the east. There is a sun coming up and then you see a tree in the east. So the sun and the tree. Pretty simple, right?
Okay let’s look at how to draw this kanji. Pay attention to the stroke order. Left to right on the top, and next we draw 日 (hi) kanji. And we go back to the top and go straight down to the bottom. Middle, down, and middle to the right. Let’s try one more time. 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, 6, 7, 8.
Now let’s look at some sample words and phrases.
Ta-dah!
For On reading we have tou. とうほく (Tōhoku) you see the east kanji here? This means north-east.
And for Kun reading, we have higashi which is also commonly used Japanese name for Mr. Higashi or Mrs. Higashi. Higashi san which means east.
