Lesson 5,
Land of the Rising Sun.
Today, we have the second kanji found in the word for Japan.
Let’s start the kanji for this lesson. The meaning for this kanji is a sun and we are going to have a trick for memorizing this kanji in just a minute but let’s first look at the reading for this kanji.
Remember, there are two kinds of reading in kanji? First one is 音読み (on'yomi) the On readings and the second one is 訓読み (kun'yomi) the Kun readings. Long story short, On readings come from Chinese and the Kun readings come from Japanese.
The On reading for this kanji is ジツ (jitsu) and ニチ (nichi) and the Kun reading for this kanji is か (ka) and ひ (hi).
And remember the trick that I was telling you about? Let’s look at that now.
There is a sun and there is a black dot in the sun. And that became this middle line.
Now let’s look at how to draw this kanji. Pay attention to the stroke order. Starting from left top, go down and next we draw the middle line and then close it down. Let’s try it one more time. 1, 2, 3 in the middle, and 4, Got it?.
Let’s look at some sample words and phrases.

The On reading for this kanji is jitsu and nichi .Let’s look at jitsu first. Remember this kanji? ホン (hon) right?. So this is ほんじつ (honjitsu) means today. Next one is nichi. まいにち (mainichi) which means every day.
Next we have Kun readings. The Kun reading for this kanji is ka and hi. For ka we have みっか (mikka) which means the third date. Next we have hi, ひづけ (hizuyke) which means the date.
