INTRODUCTION
Natsuko: こんにちは、なつこです。
Naomi: なおみです。
Chris: Chris here. How Much Do You Appreciate the Japanese Yen?
Naomi: 今回は、円やドルの為替相場 (exchange rate) がテーマです。
Natsuko: おお!ちょっと難しそうなテーマですね。
Naomi: そうですよね。今回の会話は、お父さん、お母さん、息子さんの三人が、食事をしながら、円やドルの値段について話しているようです。
Natsuko: ええ?親子の会話が「為替相場」?なんか、すごい知的なファミリーですよね。
Chris: そうですよね。
Naomi: 本当ですね~。
Chris: So in this lesson you'll hear some words and phrases you often hear when talking about the foreign currency exchanges.
Natsuko: 親子の会話ですから、カジュアルに話しています。
Chris: This conversation is between a son and his parents. They are using casual Japanese.
Natsuko: それでは、さっそく聞いてみましょう。
Chris: Please listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Natsuko: 次は、英語が入ります。
さとる:岩崎の家(うち)、今度の夏休みにハワイに行くんだって。
Chris: Iwasaki's family said that they're going to Hawaii this summer.
さとる:「円高差益還元ツアーだから安い」って言ってたよ。
Chris: He said, "It's cheap because it's a yen appreciation/marginal profit reduction tour."
母:あらー、いいわねー。岩崎くんちのお母さんに、化粧品買ってきてもらおうかしら?
Chris: Ohhh, how nice. Maybe I should have Iwasaki's mother get me some cosmetics?
さとる:化粧品なら、近くのデパートでも売ってるじゃん。
Chris: Cosmetics? But they sell those at nearby department stores.
母:お母さんが使っているのは、外国の高級化粧品なの。
Chris: The cosmetics that I use are expensive ones from overseas.
母:だから、今みたいに円高の時は、海外で買った方が安いのよ。
Chris: That's why it's better to buy them overseas at a time like now, when the yen is strong.
さとる:円高ねぇ。
Chris: The rise in the value of the yen...
父:お前、なんで、円高になると、母さんの化粧品が安く買えるか、わかるか。
Chris: Satoru, do you know why when the yen is strong your mother's cosmetics can be bought cheaper?
さとる:えっと、、、
Chris: Umm...
さとる:仮に化粧品が100ドルだとして、為替レートが1ドル100円のとき、その化粧品は、円では10,000円。
Chris: suppose a cosmetic item costs one hundred dollars, and the exchange rate is one hundred yen to the dollar. The cosmetic item would be ten thousand yen.
さとる:だけど、円高が進んで、仮に1ドル90円になったとしたら、その化粧品は9,000円。
Chris: But when the yen gets stronger, suppose it's ninety yen to the dollar, that cosmetic item would be nine thousand yen.
さとる:だから、円高だと安く買えるんだよ。
Chris: That's why when the yen is strong, you can buy it cheaper.
父:そのとおり。
Chris: That's right.
母:じゃ、お母さんから、問題!
Chris: Okay, now a question from me.
母:1ドル100円から1ドル90円になったら、なんで、円高になったって言うでしょうか?90円の方が安いのに。
Chris: When the exchange rate goes from one hundred yen to the dollar to ninety yen to the dollar, why do you say that the yen is strong when ninety yen is cheaper?
さとる:そんなの初歩的な問題だよ。
Chris: That's a question for beginners.
さとる:この場合、1ドルの価値が100円から90円に下がっているんだよね。つまり、ドルが安くなっている、
Chris: In this case, the value of the dollar goes down from one hundred yen to ninety yen. That is, the dollar is cheaper,
さとる:いわゆる「ドル安」。ドルが円に対して価値が下がっていること。
Chris: as we say "dollar depreciation." The dollar's value against the yen is depreciated.
さとる:だけど、逆に、円の価値はドルに対して高くなっているから、「円高」っていうんだ。
Chris: But, on the other hand, the yen's value against the dollar is higher; therefore, it's called "yen appreciation."
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Naomi: なんだか、頭のよさそうな話し方をする子どもですね。
Natsuko: すごいですよねぇ。詳しいし。会話の最初の部分は中学生かな・・・と思ったんですけど、後半部分で「いわゆる」とか「つまり」とか、中学生にしたらちょっと大人びた言葉を使ってますよね。
Chris: じゃ、高校生くらいですかね。
Natsuko: うーん、そうかもしれないですね。
Naomi: そうですね。ところで、お二人は、ドルや円のレートっていうのは、よくチェックします?
Chris: 全くしないですね。
Natsuko:
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Naomi: では、今日のダイアログに出てきた単語を確認していきましょう。
最初の単語は、
Natsuko: 「円高」
Chris: "high-valued yen"
Naomi: 「円高」は「円が高い」つまり「円が強い」(the yen is strong) ということですね。
逆の言葉は何でしょうか。
Natsuko: 「円安」
Chris: 円安 means "cheap yen" or "weak yen." 「円が安い」と書きますね。
Naomi: はい、そうですね。この「高い」という漢字と「安い」という漢字は、ドルの後につけることもできますよね。
Natsuko: はい、例えば「ドル高」
Chris: “high-value dollar”
Natsuko: 「ドル安」
Chris: “weak dollar”
Natsuko: あと他によく聞くのは、「ユーロ高」(strong Euro)「ユーロ安」(weak Euro)。
Naomi: では、例文をお願いします。
Natsuko: 「最近は、円高ドル安のため、海外旅行に行く日本人が増えた。」
Chris: “There’s been recently increasing Japanese tourist to abroad because of the strong yen and weak dollar.”
Naomi: 「円高」だけだと、円が何に対して強いのか、ユーロなのか、ドルなのか、ちょっとわからないときもあるみたいで、よりわかりやすくするために、「円高ドル安」(strong yen weak dollar) というように、セットとして使われることもあります。
Natsuko: ちなみに「円高ドル安」の反対の言葉は、「円安ドル高」(weak yen strong dollar) です。
Naomi: では、「円高」(strong yen) を使った言葉を一つ紹介しましょう。
Natsuko: はい、出てきましたよ。「円高差益還元」
Naomi: おぉー、これは、3つの単語からできています。
Natsuko: まず「円高」(high-valued yen)
Natsuko: 「差益」(marginal profits)
Natsuko: 「還元」(return to origins)
Naomi: まず、「円高」は大丈夫ですね。次の「差益」という単語を見てください。「差」は
Chris: "difference", "gap", "margin"
Naomi: 「益」
Chris: "profit"
Naomi: なので、「差益」というと
Chris: "marginal gain"
Natsuko: つまり「円高差益」というのは、「円高によってできた利益」ということです。
Chris: So 円高差益 means "profits brought by strong yen"or "higher profit margin due to the high yen."
Naomi: 次の「還元」というのは、本当に難しい単語なんですが、簡単に言えば「元に戻す」ということなんですね。
Chris: So 還元 means "to return to normal or to the origin."
Natsuko: つまり、「円高還元」は「円高で得た利益をお客さんに戻す」という意味なんです。
Chris: 円高差益還元 means "a price reduction based on the strong yen within the market.” Naomi: で、先ほども言いましたが、外国製品とか外国の食品などを売っているお店では「円高差益還元」とか「円高還元セール」という広告を見ます。

Lesson focus

Naomi: 今回のレッスンでは「仮に」の使い方を勉強しましょう。
Chris: The focus of this lesson is the usage of an adverb, 仮に, "supposing that" or "if."
Naomi: 何かを説明するときに、例を出してわかりやすく説明する。そんなときに使う表現です。場合によっては、「例えば」(for example) くらいの意味にもなりますね。
じゃ、例文をお願いします。
Natsuko: はい。「仮に、日本の大学に行くとしたら、一年間200万円かかる。」
Chris: “If you want to go to college in Japan, it will cost 2 million yen in a year.”
Naomi: 「たら」 とか「ば」とか「なら」とか、conditional というのはたくさんありますが、
このレッスンでは「仮に~としたら」と「仮に~として」という二つの文章の形にフォーカスしましょう。
Chris: まず、「仮に~としたら」から教えてください。So please tell how to use the 仮に~としたら sentence structure.
Chris: Ah...like "let's suppose that" or "let's say..."
Naomi: だから、可能性とかはあまり関係ないんです。
Natsuko: うーん、そうですね。
Naomi: じゃぁなつこさん、例文お願いします。
Natsuko: はい。「仮に、彼が無実だとして。。。じゃ、犯人は誰なんだ?」
Chris: “So, suppose that he is innocence, then who is the real culprit?”
あ、質問いいですか。
Natsuko:
Naomi: あ、そうですね。
Chris: 順番はどっちでもいいですか。「もし・かりに」「かりに・もし」
Natsuko: うん、大丈夫です。
Naomi: ニュアンスも一緒ですよね。ただ、「もし」を入れると「仮説」のニュアンスが少し強調されるんですね。
Chris: So if you say もし仮に or 仮にもし in stead of 仮に, the hypothetical nature of the statement is emphasized. Maybe it can be translated as "hypothetically speaking"? わかりました!ありがとうございました。

Outro

Naomi: では、今回のレッスンはこの辺で。
Natsuko: それでは、また!
Chris: お疲れ様でした。
