INTRODUCTION
Natsuko: こんにちは、なつこです。
Naomi: なおみです。
Anthony: Anthony here. You Better Have a Good Reason!
Naomi: タイトルは、You better have a good reason...うーん。これは、どうやって訳しましょうね。理由がなくちゃ駄目だ?なにか理由があるはずだ?って感じですかね。
Natsuko: そうですね、なんか訳があるんでしょ?っていう感じですね。ということで、このレッスンでは「理由」「結果」を表す表現「わけだ」の使い方を勉強します。
Anthony: In this lesson you'll learn about the usage of "wake da" which is used to express reason or conclusion
Natsuko: 今回の会話は あゆみさんと里奈さんという二人の女の子の会話です。二人の友達「綾香」ちゃんが男の子とデートをしているところを偶然みかけたみたいですね。。
Naomi: この子達はいくつくらいですかね?
Natsuko: 高校生か大学生くらいだと思います。友達同士なので、カジュアルに話しています。
Anthony: The conversation is between 2 girls, Ayumi and Rina. They've seen their friend Ayaka going on a date with a boy. We assume that they are in high school or college. Since they're friends, they're using informal Japanese.
Natsuko: それでは聞いてみましょう。
Anthony: Let's listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Naomi:次は英語が入ります。
あゆみ:あれ?あそこにいるの、健と綾香じゃない?!
: Hmm? Isn’t that Ken and Ayaka over there?!
里奈:あ!腕なんか組んじゃって、あの二人、付き合ってるっての?
: Oh! What are they doing all arm in arm like that? Are they together?
あゆみ: 道理で、綾香、最近付き合いが悪くなったわけだ。
: Well that explains why it’s been so hard to get Ayaka to come out lately.
: 私たちが誘っても、理由をつけて、断っていたのには、こういう訳があったのね。
:Even if we invite her out, lately it seems there’s always some reason why she can’t come.
: でも、内緒にするなんて、水臭いよねぇ。
:But it’s pretty stand-offish of her to keep it all a secret.
里奈:そうだね。でも、まぁ・・・仕方ないか・・
: Yeah. But well… I guess it can’t be helped…
あゆみ:なんでよ?何か訳があるの?
: Why do you say that? Is there some special situation?
里奈:実は、さゆりも健のことがずーっと好きだったんだよね。
: Well, as it happens, Sayuri has been smitten with Ken for some time now.
: それで、さゆりは、綾香に、「健との仲を取り持って」って頼んでいたのよ。
:And Sayuri actually asked Ayaka to help her get Ken by acting as a go between.
あゆみ:えっ!そうなの!!じゃ、綾香は、さゆりが健のこと好きだって知ってたわけ?!
: What?! Really?!! So, Ayaka knows that Sayuri likes Ken?!
里奈:そ、そういうことになるね。。
: Well, yeah that seems to be the case….
: つまり、綾香は、さゆりを裏切ったわけよ。
:It looks like Ayaka’s stabbed Sayuri in the back.
あゆみ:それじゃあ、言い出しにくいわけだ。
: Okay, that could really make it tough to bring the subject up.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Naomi: あららららって感じですね。さゆりさん、綾香さん、そして、健君、恋の三角関係ですね。
Natsuko: 女の子同士は、こうゆうの面倒くさいんですよね。
Naomi:けっこうドロドロしちゃったりしそうですよね。
Anthony: 男の立場からすると、健君がうらやましいですね。
Natsuko:
Anthony: まぁ、難しい質問ですけど、友情ですかね。
Natsuko: おぉ、かっこういい。
Natsuko:i: どうでしょうね。私の場合は相談されたときに、正直に「自分も実は…」って言っちゃうかもしれないですね。
Naomi:それが一番いいかもしれないですね。
Natsuko:それが言えないと、結構、後々大変ですよね。
Naomi:なるほど。リスナーの皆さんだったらどうしますか?
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Anthony: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Naomi: では単語を見ていきましょう。まず最初の単語は?
Natsuko: 水くさい
Anthony: secretive, distant
Natsuko: 仲がいい人なのに、大事なことを言わないとか、必要以上に遠慮をしている、そういう時に使いますね。
水は water くさいは smelly ですね つまり直訳すると、水のにおいがするということですかね。
Anthony: So 水臭いliterally means "It smells water"?
Don’t water it down とか。バーに行くときに、よく耳にしますけれども。
Natsuko:水で割らないで という意味ですか?
Anthony:そうですね、もともとの酒、濃いままでくださいよ。っていう話なんで、同じようなことで Don’t water the love down. こういうことですかね。
Natsuko:すごく感じが出てますよね。じゃ、例文を出してみましょう。
Naomi: あの、実は、明日、アメリカに引越しまいます。しばらく、日本には帰ってきまん。
Natsuko: ええ?水臭いなー。友達でしょ。もっと早く教えてよ。
Anthony: So Naomi said that she was moving to the States the next day. Natsuko said 水臭いなぁー もっと早くおしえてよ "You're so secretive. You should have told me earlier."
Natsuko: この「臭い」って名詞につけて、「~のにおいがする」と言う意味になんですよね。だから、便利に使えますよね。
Anthony: 汗臭い sweaty とか、ガス臭い smells like gas とか、かび臭い smells like mold, moldy 、納豆臭い smells like Nattoとか
Natsuko: 他にも、青臭いなんていうのもありますよね。
Naomi: ああああー。いい例ですね、青臭い smell of green?
Anthony: 訳すなら、still wet behind the earsですかね。
NATSUKO: そういう言い方なんですね。青臭いというのは、とても若いと言う意味ですね。
NAOMI: そんな青臭い事をいわないでよ。
Anthony: Don't say such an immature thing.
Naomi: では次の単語を見てみましょう。
Natsuko: 裏切る
Anthony: to betray
Natsuko: 名詞は「裏切り」double cross, treason, betrayalですね。
Naomi: 「裏切る」が動詞 「裏切り」が名詞、nounですね。レッスンのダイアログには?
Natsuko: つまり、綾香は、さゆりを裏切った
Anthony: So it looks like Ayaka’s stabbed Sayuri in the back.
Naomi: 裏つまり後ろから、「とうー」とナイフで切りつける感じなんでしょうね。後ろから切る。。。裏から切る、裏切り。
Natuko: なるほどね。だって、敵には背中は見せないですからね。背中を見せてるということは、その人を信じている、つまり友達、仲間だと思っていたのに、その人から後ろから切られちゃう・・・怖い言葉ですね。裏切られる。
Anthony: 裏 means behind or back. So Natsuko is saying that nobody shows one's back to one's enemies because it's dangerous.裏切る is like stabbed from the back by the person you trust.
Naomi: 語源には、色々な説があるんですよね。で、実は、これが本当かどうかっていうのは誰もわからないところなんですが、こう覚えれば、簡単かなと思います。
Anthony: There are many explanations about origin of this word, but we think it’s at very least good mnemonic to help you memorize 裏切り
Natsuko:では、文法に入っていきたいと思います。

Lesson focus

Naomi: このレッスンの文法は「---わけだ」です。「わけだ」には色々な意味があるんですけど、今日は基本だけを勉強していきます。まず 訳 の意味は?
Anthony: reason
Naomi: そうですね。理由と同じ意味です。例えば今日のレッスンのダイアログではあゆみが。。。
Natsuko: 何か訳があるの?
Anthony: Is there some special situation/reason?
Naomi: 何か理由があるの?といっても同じことですね。これが、訳の基本の意味です。つぎに、話している人の納得[ speaker's sense of understanding] を表す「---わけだ」を見てみましょう。話している人が、「あ~だから、こうなのか」とか「あーわかったわかった。それで、こうなのか」と何かがわかったときに使います。例えば、
Natsuko: 電車が事故で止まっているらしいよ。
Anthony: "Apparently the trains are stopped due to an accident."
Naomi: あー、道理で駅が混雑しているわけだ。
Anthony: Ah...So that’s why the station is so crowded.
Anthony: Based on the information the first speaker gave, 「電車が事故で止まっているらしい」 (apparently the trains are stopped due to an accident), the second speaker is talking about the deduction that they have made – that the station is crowded and in a state of confusion because of that situation. There is also a sense of understanding - a feeling that "it's only natural" that the station is crowded and confused because of the accident.
Natuko: 道理でというのは、「だから」とか「それで」と同じような意味ですね。「道理で」「それで」「だから」はよく「訳だ」一緒に使われます。
Anthony: in 「~わけだ」 sentences, the speaker can express a conclusion or deduction they have reached in relation to the information that came before. To express an understanding for why something is the way it is, it’s common to use the phrase dōri de (道理で, "no wonder," "that explains why") in conjunction with 「~わけだ」.
Naomi: ダイアログには
Natsuko: 道理で、綾香、最近付き合いが悪くなったわけだ。
Anthony: "Well that explains why it’s been so hard to get Ayaka to come out lately."
Naomi: 綾香は、男の子とデートをしていたんですよね。それを見た友達が、「あーだから、綾香は私たちともう一緒に遊ばなくなったのね。私たちと遊ばなくなったのはこうゆう理由があったのね」といっていわけです。
Natsuko: 「わけだ」はいろいろな意味があるんですが、もう一つ、何かを言い換えるときにも使います。「つまり」in other word と一緒に使われますね。ダイアログには「つまり、綾香は、さゆりを裏切ったわけよ」
Anthony: In short, Ayaka betrayed Sayuri./ It looks like Ayaka’s stabbed Sayuri in the back.
Naomi: つまり、今日は、「わけだ」2つの意味を紹介したと言うわけですね。
Anthony: Right, today we introduce the two usages of わけだ。
Natsuko: 次回も「わけだ」を勉強します。

Outro

Natsuko: それじゃ、また。
Anthony: See you next time.
