Jessi: Daddy, you shouldn't smoke cigarettes. You'll start a fire.
お父さん: ハックション!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Jessi: 美咲ちゃんは、消防署からの放送を聞いて、真似したんですね。
So Misaki listened to an announcement from a fire station and she was copying what it was saying.
Tomoyuki: うーん、これは「消防署からの放送」じゃなくて「消防車からの放送」ですね。
Jessi: 消防車からの放送?It's an announcement from a Fire -truck-?
Tomoyuki: はい。秋や冬になると、空気が乾燥して火事が増えるんですよ。だから、消防車が住宅地にパトロールに来るんです。
Jessi: Ah, so the fire truck patrol the residential area during fall and winter - this is when a lot of fires tend to occur due to the dryness.
何て言ってましたっけ?「火の用心」でしたっけ?
Tomoyuki: そうです。「火の用心」これは「火に気をつけてください」という意味です。英語だと “Lookout for fire” ですか?
Jessi: そうですね。I guess it would be something like "Be careful with fire" or "Beware of fire".
Tomoyuki: ちなみに、アメリカにもこういうのはあるんですか?
Jessi: うーん、ないですね。 You will see signs with these messages on campgrounds and stuff, but that's about all I can really think of.
Tomoyuki: ほー、そうですか。
Jessi: トモユキさんが住んでいるところにも、消防車が来て「火の用心」って言いますか?
Tomoyuki: えー、消防車でがないんですが、町内会の人たちが、子供達と一緒に「火の用心」と言います。
Jessi: あー私、見たことあります。
Tomoyuki: あ、そうですか。
Jessi: はい。In some cases, it's people that go around the neighborhood and say these 「火の用心」and sometimes they kind of clap together these wooden sticks, is that right?
Tomoyuki: はい、そうですね。でも「火の用心」って聞くと、「ああ、秋が来たんだな~」とか思いますね。
Jessi: ああ、So hearing that reminds you that fall has come.
Tomoyuki: はい。
Jessi: It’s fall. なるほど。I can see that.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Jessi: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
最初は何を紹介しますか? What are we going to look at first?
Tomoyuki: おる and おります
Jessi: おる is the humble form of the verb いる meaning "to be" or "to exist."
Tomoyuki: "おります" is the masu form of "おる"
Jessi: Let us show you with examples. How do you say "I have a younger brother."
Tomoyuki: 弟がいます。
Jessi: 弟がいます。"I have a brother." If you replace います with おります, you can make the sentence even more formal.
Tomoyuki: 弟がおります。"I have a brother."
Jessi: OK. Listeners, listen and repeat. "I have a brother."
Tomoyuki: 弟がおります。
Jessi: (Wait for 5 sec) Good. OK. Let's do one more. How do you say "it's raining."
Tomoyuki: 雨が降っています。
Jessi: It's a formal sentence meaning "it's raining." How would you say in even more formal situation.
Tomoyuki: Replace います with おります……So, 雨が降っております。
Jessi: "It's raining." OK. Listeners, listen and repeat after Tomoyuki. "it's raining."
Tomoyuki: 雨が降っております。
Jessi: (wait for 5 sec). OK. 次は何ですか?What are we looking at next?
Tomoyuki: 火の元
Jessi: "origin of fire" or "source of fire."
Tomoyuki: では「火」の意味は?
Jessi: Fire.
Tomoyuki: はい。それでは「元」の意味は?
Jessi: Origin or source
Tomoyuki: 「火の元」は、マッチとかタバコとかキッチンのコンロとかストーブとか、火事の原因になるものを言いますね。
Jessi: 火の元 usually refers to kitchen stoves or heaters which can cause a fire.
Tomoyuki: In the dialogue, the announcement said 火の元に注意し、防火にご協力ください, right?
Jessi: That's right. And actually that's this lesson's target grammar point.
OK. On to the grammar section.

Lesson focus

Jessi: The focus of this lesson is listening to an announcement from fire patrol. In this grammar section, you'll review how to make an extra formal request.
Tomoyuki: In this lesson's dialogue, we have...火の元に注意し、防火にご協力ください。
Jessi: "Please be careful of possible causes of fire. We request your kind cooperation in helping to prevent fires."
Tomoyuki: この「ご協力ください」が、このレッスンのポイントですね。
Jessi: Right. So the formation is the honorific prefix ご plus [a noun describes action] followed by ください. It is a request for someone to do that action.
Let's show you with some examples. Tomoyuki. How do you say, "to be careful"?
Tomoyuki: 注意する
Jessi: Take off する
Tomoyuki: 注意
Jessi: Put the honorific prefix ご before it
Tomoyuki: ご注意
Jessi: And then add ください to it.
Tomoyuki: ご注意ください
Jessi: This means "Please be careful" or "Please watch out".
Tomoyuki: 注意してください also means "Please be careful." But when speaking very formally, ご注意ください is better.
Jessi: OK. Please repeat after Tomoyuki. "Please be careful"
Tomoyuki: ご注意ください。
Jessi: (wait for 5 sec.) OK. Let's do one more. How do you say..."to cooperate"
Tomoyuki: 協力する
Jessi: Then drop する
Tomoyuki: 協力
Jessi: Attach ご in the front and ください to the end.
Tomoyuki: ご協力ください
Jessi: This means "please cooperate with us" or "We request your kind cooperation."
OK. Listen and repeat after Tomoyuki."please cooperate with us".
Tomoyuki: ご協力ください
Jessi:(wait for 5 sec). So Tomoyuki, can we have a sentence from the dialogue using this construction?
Tomoyuki: はい。火の元に注意し、防火にご協力ください。
Jessi: All right, Let's break down this sentence.
Tomoyuki: 火の元
Jessi: "origin of fire"
Tomoyuki: に
Jessi: particle に
Tomoyuki: 注意し
Jessi: “be careful.” And, so, 火の元に注意し means "Be careful of origin of fire and" and what’s next?
Tomoyuki: 防火
Jessi: “fire prevention”
Tomoyuki: に
Jessi: particle に
Tomoyuki: ご協力ください
Jessi: “please cooperate with us"
Jessi: 防火にご協力ください means "Please cooperate with us for fire prevention". Can we hear the sentence again?
Tomoyuki:はい。もう1回言います。火の元に注意し、防火にご協力ください。
Jessi: "Please be careful of possible causes of fire. We request your kind cooperation in helping to prevent fires."
Tomoyuki: では、今回のアナウンスのパートだけを、もう1回聞いてみましょう。
Jessi: Now let's listen to the announcement part once again and see how much you understand now.
アナウンス: こちらは、赤坂消防署です。
本日は風が強く、空気が乾いております。
火の元に注意し、防火にご協力ください。
火の用心!火の用心!
Tomoyuki: どうでしたか?「本日は風が強く、空気が乾いております」が少し難しかったかもしれませんね。
Jessi: ああ、そうですね。
Tomoyuki: 「本日は風が強く」というのは、「今日は風が強くて」という意味です。
Jessi: はい。「空気が乾いております」も難しいですね〜。
Tomoyuki: ああ、そうですね〜。「空気」は"Air" 、「乾くは」"to dry"なので。
Jessi: 「空気が乾いております」means "the air is dry."
Tomoyuki: はい。皆さん大丈夫ですかね?分からなかったら、レッスンノートを読んでご確認くださいね。
Jessi: Right. Be sure to read this lesson's lesson notes for a more detailed explanation.

Outro

Tomoyuki: それでは、また。
Jessi: See you next time.
