| Tomoyuki: はい。え？ 英語でも、タイムセールはtime saleですか？ |
| Jessi: 実は、あんまり…言わないですね(笑) |
| We don't use the phrase "time sale" in English. |
| Japan's "time sales" are kind of unique, I think - it refers to when certain items at a store are discounted for a limited period of time, and usually a short one - like 30 minutes, or a couple hours. |
| Maybe a whole day. In English, we might hear about a limited time sale, but I don't think they're as short as Japanese タイムセール. |
| Tomoyuki: あ〜そうですか。 |
| Jessi: はい。 |
| Tomoyuki: 例えば、スーパーとかでも「今から2時間タイムセールをします！」って聞いたりしますね。 |
| Jessi: Right, so at a Japanese supermarket, they might suddenly say that something is on sale for the next two hours, or something like that. |
| Tomoyuki: タイムセールのときは人がたくさん来て、込むんですよね。It often gets crowded during time sales. |
| Jessi: そうですね。 |
| Tomoyuki: それから、これは僕のイメージですが、タイムセールは主婦たちの「競争」ですね。I think shoppers get a little wild during a time sale (笑) |
| Jessi: (笑)そうですね。That’s because you have to be pretty quick on your feet in order to get a good deal, right? |
| Tomoyuki: はい、そうですね(笑) |
| Jessi: ああ！ だから、ミサキちゃんが最後に「頑張ってね」“Good luck or Do your best!!” と言っていたんですね。 |
| Now I see. That’s why Misaki was telling her mother "good luck". |

| Jessi: The pronunciation here might be a little tricky. ヨーグルト is "Yogurt", and ミルク milk, right? |
| Tomoyuki: はい！ あ、でも、milkは牛乳とも言いますね。 |
| Jessi: あ、Right. 牛乳 is also milk. |
| Tomoyuki: In the dialogue, the announcement said...“バター、チーズは、30パーセント引き。ヨーグルト、牛乳は、40パーセント引き”. |
| Jessi: Whoa! That's a lot of information! |
| Tomoyuki: (笑) It's not that bad. If you understood “パーセント引き” |
| Jessi: Ah, that's right! A number plus パーセント引き means __% off. For example.”10パーセント引き” is 10% off, “20パーセント引き” is 20% off. |
| Tomoyuki: Right. バター、チーズは、30パーセント引き。 |
| Jessi: This means, as for butter and cheese, 30% off. |
| Tomoyuki: はい。そして、ヨーグルト、牛乳は、40パーセント引き。 |
| Jessi: As for yogurt and milk, 40% off. |
| Tomoyuki: はい。それでは問題です。Here's a quiz for you. How do you say "5% off" in Japanese? |
| Jessi: 5% would be “5パーセント” off is “引き” so, “5パーセント引き”. |

| Jessi: So if you replace “くれます” with “くださいます” and say... |

| Jessi: Then it sounds even more formal. OK, listeners, listen and repeat!! "The teacher always gives me candy." |

| Jessi: (wait for 5 sec). All right. Did you get the pattern? |
| Now, if you remember, in Beginner series season 6 Lesson 7, you learned how to say "thank you for [--- using the て form of a verb] ＋”くれて”＋”ありがとうございます" sentence structure. |
| Tomoyuki: Such as “教えてくれてありがとうございます”. "thank you for teaching me" |
| Jessi: In order to make this sentence extra formal, replace “くれて” with “くださいまして”. |
| Tomoyuki: 教えてくださいまして、ありがとうございます。 |
| Jessi: OK. Listeners, listen and repeat after Tomoyuki."Thank you for teaching me" |
| Tomoyuki: 教えてくださいまして、ありがとうございます。 |
| Jessi: (wait for 5 sec). Great. Tomoyuki, can we hear the sentence from the dialogue again? |
| Tomoyuki: はい。本日も101スーパーをご利用くださいまして、誠にありがとうございます。 |
| Jessi: All right. Let's break this sentence down. |
| Tomoyuki: 本日(Jessi: Today) も(Jessi: too)101スーパーを(Jessi: 101Supermarket plus particle を) ご利用くださいまして(Jessi: Now this “ご利用くださいまして” means “ご利用してくださいまして”. But the “して” part was dropped. This means "you kindly used it") |
| So, the first part, ”本日も101スーパーをご利用くださいまして” means "You kindly used 101supermarket today as always" And followed by? |
| Tomoyuki: 誠に(Jessi: Indeed)ありがとうございます(Jessi: thank you)。 |
| Jessi: “誠にありがとうございます” means "Thank you indeed." Can we hear the sentence one more time? |
| Tomoyuki: はい。もう1回言いましょう。 |

| Jessi: アナウンスって結構ゆっくりなんですね。After 13 lessons, I kind of realized that Japanese announcements aren't that fast. They speak very clearly, too. |
| Tomoyuki: ああ、気付きました？ 実は、アナウンスはゆっくりはっきり話すので、敬語が分かれば、そんなに難しくないんです。 |
| Jessi: They speak clearly and slowly, so if you know the extra formal language, 敬語, they're not too hard to figure out. |
| But that means you need to know the basic rules for extra formal language. |
| Tomoyuki: まあ、そうですね(笑) |
| Jessi: はい。 |
