INTRODUCTION
Janet: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Japanese learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.

Lesson focus

Janet: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “Are you hungry?” In Japanese this is
Kaori: お腹が空いていますか。
(おなかがすいていますか。 Onaka ga suiteimasu ka.)
Janet: The first word in the question is
Kaori: お腹
(おなか onaka)
Janet: meaning “stomach” in English.
Kaori: (Slow, by syllable) お腹
(おなか onaka)
Janet: Listen again and repeat.
Kaori: お腹
(おなか onaka)
{Pause}
Janet: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Kaori: が
(ga)
Janet: the subject marking particle.
Kaori: (Slow, by syllable) が
(ga)
Janet: Now repeat.
Kaori: が
(ga)
{Pause}
Janet: Listen to the the first 2 words of the question and repeat.
Kaori: お腹 が
(おなか が onaka ga)
{pause}
Janet: And after that
Kaori: すいています
(suiteimasu)
Janet: meaning “to become empty”, but in this case it means “hungry.”
Kaori: (Slow, by syllable) すいています
(suiteimasu)
Janet: Now repeat.
Kaori: すいています
(suiteimasu)
{Pause}
Janet: Listen to the the first 3 words of the question and repeat.
Kaori: お腹 が すいています
(onaka ga suiteimasu)
{pause}
Janet: And next
Kaori: か
(ka)
Janet: meaning (question marker).
Kaori: (Slow, by syllable) か
(ka)
Janet: Now repeat.
Kaori: か
(ka)
{Pause}
Janet: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Kaori: お腹 が すいています か。
(Onaka ga suiteimasu ka.)
{pause}
Janet: (You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies.) Master the following pattern and responses to the question “Are you hungry?”
Kaori: はい、少しすいています。
(はい、すこしすいています。 Hai, sukoshi suiteimasu.)
Janet: "Yes, I'm a little hungry.” Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Kaori: (Slow) はい、少しすいています。
(はい、すこしすいています。 Hai, sukoshi suiteimasu.)
{pause}
Janet: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word:
Kaori: はい
(hai)
Janet: means “yes.”
Kaori: (Slow, by syllable) はい
(hai)
Janet: Now repeat
Kaori: はい
(hai)
{Pause}
Janet: And next
Kaori: 少し
(すこし sukoshi)
Janet: meaning “a little bit.”
Kaori: (Slow, by syllable) 少し
(すこし sukoshi)
Janet: Now repeat.
Kaori: 少し
(すこし sukoshi)
{Pause}
Janet: Next is
Kaori: 空いています
(すいています suiteimasu)
Janet: In this case, meaning something like “hungry”.
Kaori: (Slow, by syllable) 空いています
(すいています suiteimasu)
Janet: Now repeat.
Kaori: 空いています
(すいています suiteimasu)
{Pause}
Janet: Listen to the speaker say, “Yes, I'm a little hungry”, and then repeat.
Kaori: はい、少し空いています。
(はい、すこしすいています。 Hai, sukoshi suiteimasu.)
{pause}
Janet: To expand on the pattern, replace “a little” with “very”.
Kaori: とても
(totemo)
Janet: very
Kaori: (slow) とても(totemo)
(regular) とても(totemo)
Janet: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “very”.
Kaori: はい、とても空いています。
(はい、とてもすいています。 Hai, totemo suiteimasu.)
Janet: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace “a little” with “very”. Say “Yes, I'm very hungry”.
{pause}
Kaori: はい、とても空いています。
(はい、とてもすいています。)
Janet: To use a different phrase, replace “very” with “extremely”.
Kaori: ものすごく
(monosugoku)
Janet: extremely
Kaori: (slow) ものすごく(monosugoku)
(regular) ものすごく(monosugoku)
Janet: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “extremely”
Kaori: はい、ものすごく空いています。
(はい、ものすごくすいています。 Hai, monosugoku suiteimasu.)
Janet: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace “very” with “extremely”. Say “Yes, I'm absolutely hungry.”
{pause}
Kaori: はい、ものすごく空いています。
(はい、ものすごくすいています。 Hai, monosugoku suiteimasu.)
Janet: To say "no", in a simple way, just say:
Kaori: いいえ、空いていません。
(いいえ、すいていません。 Iie, suiteimasen.)
Janet: Which is like saying “No, I’m not hungry.” in English. Let's hear it slowly.
Kaori: (Slowly) いいえ、空いていません。
(いいえ、すいていません。 Iie, suiteimasen.)
Janet: And one more time at normal speed:
Kaori: いいえ、空いていません。
(いいえ、すいていません。 Iie, suiteimasen.)
Janet: When you want to say “I’m not at all hungry”, you can make a phrase using this word.
Kaori: 全然
(ぜんぜん zenzen)
Janet: meaning “at all”
Kaori: (slow) 全然
(ぜんぜん zenzen)
(regular) 全然
(ぜんぜん zenzen)
Janet: Listen to the phrase this time with “at all”
Kaori: いいえ、全然空いていません。
(いいえ、ぜんぜんすいていません。 Iie, zenzen suiteimasen.)
Janet: It means “No, I'm not at all hungry.” Say it again.
{pause}
Kaori: いいえ、全然空いていません。
(いいえ、ぜんぜんすいていません。)
