Dialogue

Lesson Transcript

Do you know how to make comparisons in Japanese?
Welcome to Three Step Japanese Practice by JapanesePod101.com. In this lesson, you will practice how to make comparisons.
Let’s look at the main dialogue.
Two people are having a conversation.
クラスの中で ひまりちゃんが いちばん じょうずです。 (Kurasu no naka de Himari-chan ga ichiban jōzu desu.)
She's the best in the class.
そうですか。 じゃ、ひまりの ほうが わたしよりじょうずですね。 (Sō desu ka. Ja, Himari no hō ga watashi yori jōzu desu ne.)
Is that so? Then Himari is better than me.
This sentence follows the pattern here.
[Noun 1] のほうが [Noun 2] より [Adjective] です。
You can also flip the order depending on which noun you want to focus on
We use this pattern to compare two things and say that one has more of a certain quality than the other.
Let’s practice with this grammar more in this lesson.
