Do you know how to ask someone what they prefer in Japanese? |
Welcome to Three Step Japanese Practice by JapanesePod101.com. In this lesson, you will practice how to ask someone what they prefer. |
Let’s look at the main dialogue. |
Two people are having a conversation. |
いいですよ。 気にしないで ください。 何か ごちそうしますよ。ケーキと アイスクリームと どちらが いいですか。 (Ii desu yo. Ki ni shinai de kudasai. Nani ka gochisō shimasu yo. Kēki to aisukurīmu to dochira ga ii desu ka.) |
It’s okay. Don’t worry about it. Let me treat you to something. Which do you prefer, cake or ice cream? |
あ、ありがとうございます。 わたしは どちらでも いいです。 |
(A, arigatō gozaimasu. Watashi wa dochira demo ii desu.) |
Oh, thank you. Either one is fine with me. |
We use [Noun 1] と [Noun 2]と どちらがいいですか to ask someone what they prefer. In the dialogue, “ケーキと アイスクリームと、どちらが いいですか” means “Which do you prefer, cake or ice cream?” |
We also learned |
[Noun 1] と [Noun 2]と どちらに しますか。 |
which is used when asking what someone will choose. |
Let’s practice using these patterns more in this lesson. |
