Dialogue

Lesson Transcript

Do you know how to ask someone what they prefer in Japanese?
Welcome to Three Step Japanese Practice by JapanesePod101.com. In this lesson, you will practice how to ask someone what they prefer.
Let’s look at the main dialogue.
Two people are having a conversation.
いいですよ。 気にしないで ください。 何か ごちそうしますよ。ケーキと アイスクリームと どちらが いいですか。 (Ii desu yo. Ki ni shinai de kudasai. Nani ka gochisō shimasu yo. Kēki to aisukurīmu to dochira ga ii desu ka.)
It’s okay. Don’t worry about it. Let me treat you to something. Which do you prefer, cake or ice cream?
あ、ありがとうございます。 わたしは どちらでも いいです。
(A, arigatō gozaimasu. Watashi wa dochira demo ii desu.)
Oh, thank you. Either one is fine with me.
We use [Noun 1] と [Noun 2]と どちらがいいですか to ask someone what they prefer. In the dialogue, “ケーキと アイスクリームと、どちらが いいですか” means “Which do you prefer, cake or ice cream?”
We also learned
[Noun 1] と [Noun 2]と どちらに しますか。
which is used when asking what someone will choose.
Let’s practice using these patterns more in this lesson.
