Dialogue

Lesson Transcript

Do you know how to say you want to do something in Japanese?
Welcome to Three Step Japanese Practice by JapanesePod101.com. In this lesson, you will practice how to say you want to do something.
Let’s look at the main dialogue.
Two people are having a conversation.
そろそろ、新しいジムを はじめたいです。(Sorosoro, atarashii jimu o hajimetai desu.)
I want to start a new gym soon.
そうですか。 ささきさんはそんなにけいえいが好きでしたか。(Sō desu ka. Sasaki-san wa sonna ni keiei ga suki deshita ka.)
Oh, really? Did you like running a business that much?
In this dialogue, the first character uses the word はじめたい (hajimetai) to show that they WANT to begin something. Here, ‘~たい’ attaches to the verb stem はじめ- to express desire.
Let’s practice with this grammar more in this lesson.
