In this lesson, you'll learn how to talk about past experience through a quick conversation.
Let's look at the dialogue.
As you listen, pay attention to how they ask about the topic and how the other person responds.
おいしいすしやに いきましょう｡ ごちそうしますよ｡
Oishii sushiya ni ikimashou. Gochisou shimasu yo.
ささきさんは ほんとうに すしが すきですね｡
Sasaki san wa hontou ni sushi ga suki desu ne.
はい､大すきです｡ わたしは 子どものとき いわてに いました｡ いわての すしは ほんとうに おいしいです｡ だから､ 小さいとき よく 食べました｡ でも､ アメリカでは､ぜんぜん 食べませんでした｡
Hai, daisuki desu. Watashi wa kodomo no toki Iwate ni imashita. Iwate no sushi wa hontou ni oishii desu. Dakara, chiisai toki yoku tabemashita. Demo, Amerika de wa zenzen tabemasen deshita.
そうですか｡わたしは あまり すしを 食べません｡
Sou desu ka. Watashi wa amari sushi o tabemasen.
どうしてですか｡
Doushite desu ka.
わたしも 小さいとき はこだてで たくさん 食べました｡ はこだての すしも おいしいですから｡ でも､ とうきょうでは あまり食べません｡
Watashi mo chiisai toki Hakodate de takusan tabemashita. Hakodate no sushi mo oishii desu kara. Demo, Toukyou de wa amari tabemasen.
Let's break it down.
おいしいすしやに いきましょう｡ ごちそうしますよ｡
Oishii sushiya ni ikimashou. Gochisou shimasu yo.
Let's go to a delicious sushi restaurant. I'll treat you.
ささきさんは ほんとうに すしが すきですね｡
Sasaki san wa hontou ni sushi ga suki desu ne.
Sasaki, you really like sushi, don't you?
はい､大すきです｡ わたしは 子どものとき いわてに いました｡ いわての すしは ほんとうに おいしいです｡ だから､ 小さいとき よく 食べました｡ でも､アメリカでは､ ぜんぜん 食べませんでした｡
Hai, daisuki desu. Watashi wa kodomo no toki Iwate ni imashita. Iwate no sushi wa hontou ni oishii desu. Dakara, chiisai toki yoku tabemashita. Demo, Amerika de wa zenzen tabemasen deshita.
This part of the dialogue has our focus for the lesson. Let's break it down a little.
First is はい､大すきです｡ (Hai, daisuki desu.) Yes, I love it.
Then is わたしは 子どものとき いわてに いました｡ (Watashi wa kodomo no toki Iwate ni imashita.) This is our focus sentence.
First is the word, わたし (Watashi), meaning "I." This is the subject of the sentence. わたし (slow version - breakdown by syllable). わたし.
は(wa) is the topic marker, together わたしは means "as for me" or "I…"
After this is the phrase, 子どものとき (wa kodomo no toki), meaning "when [subject] was a child." 子どものとき (slow version - breakdown by syllable). 子どものとき.
子ども (kodomo) is "child," and のとき is "when." Since わたし (watashi) was shown as the subject before this, it's "When I was a child."
Next is the word, いわて (Iwate), which is the name of a place in Japan. いわて (slow version - breakdown by syllable). いわて.
Last is the verb, いました (Imashita), meaning "was." いました (slow version - breakdown by syllable). いました.
All together, it's わたしは 子どものとき いわてに いました。 (Watashi wa kodomo no toki Iwate ni imashita.). This translates as "When I was a child, I lived in Iwate." わたしは 子どものとき いわてに いました。 (Watashi wa kodomo no toki Iwate ni imashita.).
When I was a child, I lived in Iwate.
After that is the rest of the dialogue.
いわての すしは ほんとうに おいしいです｡ だから､ 小さいとき よく 食べました｡ でも､アメリカでは､ ぜんぜん 食べませんでした｡
Iwate no sushi wa hontou ni oishii desu. Dakara, chiisai toki yoku tabemashita. Demo, Amerika de wa zenzen tabemasen deshita.
The sushi there is really delicious. So, I ate it often when I was little. But in America, I never ate it.
そうですか｡ わたしは あまり すしを 食べません｡
Sou desu ka. Watashi wa amari sushi o tabemasen.
Is that so? I don’t eat sushi very often.
どうしてですか｡
Doushite desu ka.
Why?
わたしも 小さいとき はこだてで たくさん 食べました｡ はこだての すしも おいしいですから｡ でも､ とうきょうでは あまり食べません｡
Watashi mo chiisai toki Hakodate de takusan tabemashita. Hakodate no sushi mo oishii desu kara. Demo, Toukyou de wa amari tabemasen.
When I was little, I ate a lot of sushi in Hakodate. The sushi in Hakodate is also delicious. But in Tokyo, I don’t eat it very often.
