Hello, Japanesepod101 team
Thank you very much for the response and the hard work of your team. It makes all sense to me now, I have a better understanding of these demonstrative ko-so-ado.
Hi Eri,
Thank you for your comment!
Now let's cover the difference between "kore" and "kono."
"Kore" is called demonstrative pronoun and can be subject itself.
And "kono" is called demonstrative adjective, and is always attached to and modify a noun.
You can use these words, for example,
"Kore wa takai desu." (This is expensive.)
"Kono hon wa takai desu." (This book is expensive.)
So, for the sentence "Whose is this umbrella?",
you could say "Kono kasa wa dare no kasa desu ka."
But to avoid to say "kasa" twice in a sentence,
we can omit the second "kasa" and say "Kono kasa wa dare no desu ka."
You can also say "Kore wa dare no kasa desu ka." in the same meaning.
Please let us know if you have any further question:)
Sincerely,
Miho

Hello, Japanesepod101 team.
I kinda did bad on the exam, I'm trying to study my notes I made again.
However I'm confused with the "Whose is this umbrella? (umbrella close to you)" the sentence pattern I followed is [subject] wa dare no [noun/object] desu ka thus my answer is "kono wa dare no kasa desu ka" however I see the correct answer is "Kono kasa wa dare no desu ka." where the [object] is after the [subject/kono].
I understand that for questions it will be [object/thing/place] wa [question] desu ka...like "toire wa doko desu ka"
where should we place the object when asking who/where the object ownership/from? Is this because of the ko-so-ado [subject] is kono???
I hope my question is not confusing and thank you very much in advance for the answer.
