POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Eric: Whoa Naomi-sensei!
Naomi: はい?(Hai?)
Eric: Hey, Lori didn’t really strike me as a picky type.
Naomi: あ~、そうですね。(Ā, sō desu ne.)
Eric: You know what I mean?
Naomi: She hates water and insects.
Eric: It seems like she was fine with snowboarding though, right?
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.)
Eric: So I guess she likes snow. By the way, when is the snowboarding season here in Japan?
Naomi: It really depends on the area but I think it starts from December and ends in March, かな (ka na)? 12月から3月ですね。(Jū ni-gatsu kara san-gatsu desu ne.)
Eric: From December to March. So you think it will be too late to go in April.
Naomi: う〜んとねぇ。(Ūn to nee.) It depends on the climate of that year but some slopes are open unto early May. 5月まで大丈夫ですかね。(Go-gatsu made daijōbu desu ka ne.)
Eric: But you can expect powder snow in April or May though?
Naomi: だめですね。パウダースノーはないですね。(Dame desu ne. Paudā sunō wa nai desu ne.)
Eric: On to the vocabulary.
Naomi: 次は単語です。(Tsugi wa tango desu.)
VOCAB LIST
Eric: The first word is
Naomi: ラフティング (rafutingu)
Eric: Rafting.
Naomi: (slow) ラフティング (rafutingu) (natural speed) ラフティング (rafutingu)
Eric: The next word is
Naomi: 嫌い (kirai)
Eric: Dislikable, to dislike, to hate.
Naomi: (slow) きらい (kirai) (natural speed) 嫌い (kirai)
Eric: The next word is
Naomi: 溺れます (oboremasu)
Eric: To drown, to almost drown.
Naomi: (slow) おぼれます (oboremasu) (natural speed) 溺れます (oboremasu)
Eric: The next word is
Naomi: ライフジャケット (raifu jaketto)
Eric: Life jacket.
Naomi: (slow) ライフジャケット (raifu jaketto) (natural speed) ライフジャケット (raifu jaketto)
Eric: The next word is
Naomi: キャンプ (kyanpu)
Eric: Camping.
Naomi: (slow) キャンプ (kyanpu) (natural speed) キャンプ (kyanpu)
Eric: The last word is
Naomi: スキー (sukī)
Eric: Skiing.
Naomi: (slow) スキー (sukī) (natural speed) スキー (sukī)
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Eric: A bunch of katakana words today, right?
Naomi: はい。そうですね。(Hai. Sō desu ne.)
Eric: In the dialogue, we heard four words that sound a lot like English, Naomi-sensei.
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.) The first one is スキー (sukī).
Eric: Which means to ski or skiing.
Naomi: ラフティング (rafutingu)
Eric: Rafting.
Naomi: キャンプ (kyanpu)
Eric: Camping.
Naomi: And ライフジャケット (raifu jaketto).
Eric: Life jacket. You know another word in the vocabulary was to hate, right?
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.)
Eric: To dislike something a lot.
Naomi: 嫌い (kirai)
Eric: To hate, to dislike.
Naomi: The pronunciation is a bit tricky because we have a similar word which is きれい (kirei).
Eric: Well that’s almost like 嫌い (kirai).
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.) きれい (kirei) is beautiful.
Eric: So let’s get this clear. To hate is
Naomi: 嫌い (kirai)
Eric: きらい (kirai) with an あ (a) sound right and beautiful is
Naomi: きれい (kirei)
Eric: きれい (kirei). And you know, what I just noticed, the intonation is also different.
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.) きらい (kirai)
Eric: To dislike. It starts low and goes up.
Naomi: きれい (kirei)
Eric: Beautiful. It starts high and goes low.
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.)
Eric: So really be careful with these two words. You don’t want to end up telling a boyfriend or girlfriend how much you hate their eyes. You don’t want to be explaining that. I am serious. So on to the grammar.

Lesson focus

Eric: The focus of this lesson is expressing dislike.
Naomi: 私は水が嫌いです。(Watashi wa mizu ga kirai desu.)
Eric: I hate water. The phrase が嫌いです (ga kirai desu) can be used to talk about things that you don’t like and to talk about things that you do like, you can use
Naomi: が好きです (ga suki desu)
Eric: Which was covered in the previous lesson.
Naomi: Right. 私はスキーが好きです。(Watashi wa sukī ga suki desu.)
Eric: I like skiing. To express dislike, the thing you dislike is marked with subject marking particle が (ga) followed by 嫌いです (kirai desu). In the dialogue, Lori said
Naomi: 私は水が嫌いです。(Watashi wa mizu ga kirai desu.)
Eric: I hate water. I dislike water and as we have mentioned before, you can drop the subject.
Naomi: 私は (watashi wa)
Eric: And say
Naomi: 水が嫌いです (mizu ga kirai desu)
Eric: So if you dislike camping,
Naomi: キャンプが嫌いです。(Kyanpu ga kirai desu.)
Eric: If you hate bugs,
Naomi: 虫が嫌いです。エリックさん、何が嫌いですか。(Mushi ga kirai desu. Erikku-san, nani ga kirai desu ka.) What do you dislike or what do you hate?
Eric: うーん、そうですね。朝のラッシュが嫌いです。(Ūn, sō desu ne. Asa no rasshu ga kirai desu.)
Naomi: Morning rush.
Eric: I hate the morning rush. It’s misery on the train.
Naomi: Nobody likes 朝のラッシュ、ね (asa no rasshu, ne.)
Eric: But… なおみ先生、何が好きですか。(Naomi-sensei, nani ga suki desu ka.)
Naomi: うーん... チョコレートが好きです。(Ūn… chokorēto ga suki desu.)
Eric: You have been saying that for a couple of episodes now. You want me to bring up chocolate, don’t you?
Naomi: そうね。(Sō ne.)
Eric: Alright next time, next time. By the way. 何が嫌いですか。(Nani ga kirai desu ka.)
Naomi: 水が嫌いです。(Mizu ga kirai desu.) I am just like Lori. 昔、溺れました。(Mukashi, oboremashita.)
Eric: You almost drowned?
Naomi: 本当です。そう、昔、溺れました。(Hontō desu. Sō, mukashi, oboremashita.)

Outro

Eric: So that does it for today.
Naomi: 皆さんは何が嫌いですか。(Mina-san wa nani ga kirai desu ka.) Please let us know.
Eric: Right, complain about what you hate at japanesepod101.com in the comment section of this episode.
Naomi: お願いします。(Onegai shimasu.)
Eric: See you next time.
