POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Naomi: It seems like they are going to somewhere next weekend.
Eric: Uuu Where do you think they are going to go?
Naomi: どこでしょうね。
Eric: Disneyland.
Naomi: Disneyland for 3 days!
Eric: That’s going to be a comprehensive Disneyland trip. They could go to Nicco.
Naomi: Ah 日光 is a good place.
Eric: That’s a good place to go to trip for 3 days right?
Naomi: Yeah.
Eric: You go in the Onsen, the hot springs.
Naomi: Yeah and if you are in the Tokyo area, Mount Fuji, 富士山 is a good place to visit.
Eric: You know what, I have never been there.
Naomi: 行ったことないの? You have never been there.
Eric: But you can be there for three days and not get bored? Well I mean if you are climbing it, I am sure but what would they have there?
Naomi: They have lakes in that area and…
Eric: So you can go there for 3 days?
Naomi: Yeah I think so. Three day is bit long but maybe two days. There is a place called 富士急ハイランド. Have you ever heard of it?
Eric: Oh the huge theme park?
Naomi: はい、そうですね。
Eric: They have a crazy roller coasters and everything?
Naomi: そうそうそうそう。
Eric: That’s right by Mount Fuji right?
Naomi: そう。 Right. That’s why the roller coaster is called フジヤマ.
Eric: Right, right yeah. They are crazy. I heard they have some of the fastest roller coasters in Japan right?
Naomi: Right.
Eric: Okay and in the end, we still don’t know where Lori is going.
Naomi: そうですね。
Eric: We are going to have to wait till next week.
Naomi: Right.
Eric: So on to the vocabulary.
Naomi: 次は、単語です。
VOCAB LIST
Eric: The first phrase is
Naomi: どちら様
Eric: Who are you Honorific?
Naomi: (slow)どちらさま (natural speed) どちら様
Eric: The next word is
Naomi: 来週
Eric: Next week
Naomi: (slow)らいしゅう (natural speed) 来週
Eric: The next word is
Naomi: 金曜日
Eric: Friday
Naomi: (slow)きんようび (natural speed) 金曜日
Eric: The next word is
Naomi: 日曜日
Eric: Sunday.
Naomi: (slow)にちようび (natural speed) 日曜日
Eric: The next word is
Naomi: 暇
Eric: Free time.
Naomi: (slow)ひま (natural speed) 暇
Eric: And the last word is
Naomi: 土曜日
Eric: Saturday.
Naomi: (slow)どようび (natural speed) 土曜日
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Eric: All right. Let’s zoom in on some of these words. The first word we have is
Naomi: こんばんは。
Eric: Which means good evening.
Naomi: But please notice that the final va is spelled as は。
Eric: Right.
Naomi: You know what I mean?
Eric: Yeah that’s right. The topic marking particle.
Naomi: は。そうです。
Eric: は which is you know the Hiragana は.
Naomi: はい。
Eric: It’s not at the end of Hiragana chart. It’s in the Ha section but literally 今晩 means tonight is right.
Naomi: Yeah.
Eric: Or something like that.
Naomi: How is tonight?
Eric: Okay right.
Naomi: How are you tonight?
Eric: It’s a greeting and it basically means good evening. It’s a set phrase right. They have probably been saying it for a very long time. And what’s our next word?
Naomi: どちら様
Eric: Okay in a nutshell, this word means who like who are you but it’s very polite, very honorific.
Naomi: Who in Japanese is 誰 which we haven’t introduced yet.
Eric: And it’s very common. That’s what you usually say when you want to ask who right but so when would you use どちら様
Naomi: When you are talking to a stranger.
Eric: That you’ve never, never met.
Naomi: Or when you are not sure of who you are talking to どちら様?
Eric: So if you get a phone call and you don’t recognize the voice, you would say
Naomi: どちら様ですか?
Eric: Excuse me but who is this and finally we have.
Naomi: 来週
Eric: Next week.
Naomi: 週 is week
Eric: So らい. It actually 来 if we were to look at the kanji, it means to…
Naomi: Coming.
Eric: Come right yeah, coming. So the coming week, basically next week.
Naomi: Right and this week is 今週
Eric: Ah the こん which is the same こん from こんばんは which means now or this right?
Naomi: Now.
Eric: And hey, since we are talking about weeks, what’s the last week?
Naomi: 先週
Eric: And the character from 先 of 先週 is actually.
Naomi: Previous or before.
Eric: Right pretty straightforward right?
Naomi: はい。先週、今週and 来週。次は文法です。
Eric: Let’s look at the grammar.

Lesson focus

Eric: So tonight’s main dish is
Naomi: Seven days of the week.
Eric: Appetizing. We already saw some of the days of the week in the dialogue right.
Naomi: はい。
Eric: And in the vocabulary, we just did but let’s learn them all.
Naomi: 日曜日
Eric: Sunday.
Naomi: にちようび。日曜日。
Eric: If you have already noticed, all of the days end with the word 曜日 right and that 曜日 has a special pronunciation. Well not special, but it’s the same よう for all the days.
Naomi: ようび。曜日。
Eric: So it starts high and goes low on the second syllable and stays low.
Naomi: 曜日 It’s not ようび.
Eric: Right, it’s a long お.
Naomi: はい。
Eric: Even though when you write it down, it’s ようび but just extra お, when you are pronouncing, it’s 曜日 So let’s start again with Sunday.
Naomi: 日曜日。月曜日。
Eric: Monday.
Naomi: げつようび、月曜日。火曜日。
Eric: Tuesday.
Naomi: かようび、火曜日。水曜日。
Eric: Wednesday.
Naomi: すいようび、水曜日。木曜日。
Eric: Thursday.
Naomi: もくようび、木曜日。金曜日。
Eric: Friday.
Naomi: きんようび、金曜日。土曜日。
Eric: Saturday.
Naomi: どようび、土曜日。何曜日。
Eric: What day?
Naomi: なんようび、何曜日。
Eric: So that’s all seven of them.
Naomi: はい。
Eric: If we talk about the kanji for just a moment, they all seem pretty unrelated right. Is there anything that binds them together? Is there any relationship?
Naomi: It’s actually a name of stars but when I was a kid, I memorize the 7 days like 月火水木金土日
Eric: So purely just by the characters themselves, the first characters without the 曜日 which 曜日 pretty much just means day and if we look at the meaning of some of these characters, for Sunday, it actually is Sun right and for Monday…
Naomi: It’s moon.
Eric: It’s actually moon which I mean, I don’t know if Monday means moon but it’s close enough right. It’s like moon missing an O and we have fire and water and…
Naomi: Three gold earth.
Eric: That’s rich, wonderful. And how would you say what day is it?
Naomi: 何曜日ですか?
Eric: And that could mean what day is it today or what day is the event that you are inviting me to or…
Naomi: Both.
Eric: Anything right?
Naomi: はい。
Eric: And then if you want to respond and you want to say, it’s Sunday.
Naomi: 日曜日です。
Eric: Right it’s pretty straightforward. You just say the day and です. So in today’s dialogue, we have
Naomi: 来週の金曜日から日曜日まで、暇ですか?
Eric: You know, this is not too different from the patterns we have already seen right? We’ve already done you know, something から
Naomi: から Something まで
Eric: Exactly which means from something, to something. And in this case, what we are saying is
Naomi: 金曜日から日曜日まで。
Eric: From Friday to you guessed it, Sunday. Let’s practice. Okay I am going to give you a day, a day of the week and then you are going to have to ask if I am free that day, okay. Next Friday.
Naomi: 来週の金曜日、暇ですか?
Eric: Next Sunday.
Naomi: 来週の日曜日、暇ですか?
Eric: What day are you free?
Naomi: 何曜日、暇ですか?
Eric: All right. From practice to more practice. Okay. Naomi Sensei, you want to go to see a movie this Saturday ポニョ。
Naomi: ポニョ。あ~ポーニョポニョポニョね。
Eric: Do you want to go see ポニョ?
Naomi: I have already seen it.
Eric: So you want to go see it again because you loved it so much right?
Naomi: Oh okay.
Eric: Unless there is another movie out?
Naomi: ポニョ is good.
Eric: Okay. So you ask your friend if she is free this Saturday.
Naomi: 今週の土曜日、暇ですか?
Eric: And your friend thinks a little bit and then says, what day is it today?
Naomi: 今日何曜日ですか?
Eric: It’s Thursday.
Naomi: 木曜日です。
Eric: And then your friend realizes that she is not free this Saturday.
Naomi: 今週の土曜日、暇じゃないです。
Eric: But she is free next Saturday.
Naomi: 来週の土曜日、暇です。

Outro

Eric: All right. The time has come for us to go buy our movie tickets but before we go, I want to tell you about the voice recording tool in the Premium learning center on japanesepod101.com. Alright, this is a great tool. It’s really simple. You record your voice with a simple click of a button and play back what you just recorded and compare it to the line by line audio and this gives you a really objective look at how you are pronouncing words and in the end, it will really help your pronunciation. I really wish I had something like this when I was you know starting learning Japanese. So check it out, japanesepod101.com. I will see you guys next week.
Naomi: じゃ、また。
