Peter: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.) We have the same expression in the English about people in the fall. おめでとうございます。(Omedetō gozaimasu.)
Naomi: うそ。本当に?(Uso. Hontō ni?)

Naomi: はい。(Hai.)
Peter: Okay, let’s save that for another lesson. Okay, so what are we talking about today?
Naomi: 今日は、誕生日。(Kyō wa, tanjōbi.)
Peter: So today we are talking about birthdays.
Naomi: Yeah, and dates.
Peter: Important dates. So today we are going to learn months and dates in Japanese. So lots of things to memorize again. So…
Naomi: Good luck.
Peter: 頑張ってください。(Ganbatte kudasai.) And today’s conversation is between.
Naomi: 東さん (Higashi-san)
Peter: And
Naomi: キムミヨンさん (Kimu Mi Yon-san)
Peter: So we are using what kind of Japanese?
Naomi: Polite Japanese.
Peter: And today is a special event. What event is that?
Naomi: 今日は (kyō wa) Fabrizio’s birthday party. ファブリツィオさんの誕生日です。(Faburitsio-san no tanjōbi desu.)
Peter: With that said, let’s get into today’s lesson. Here we go.

Peter: The 8th and what day are very easy to confuse.
Naomi: 4日。(Yokka.)
Peter: The 4th – the 8th and the 4th. So can we have them, one more time?
Naomi: 4th is 4日 (yokka), the 8th is 8日 (yōka).
Peter: So the 4th, there is a ちっちゃい「っ」(chitchai “tsu”), a small pause in there.
Naomi: はい。4日。(Hai. Yokka.)
Peter: While the 8th is the long vowel.
Naomi: 8日。(Yōka.)
Peter: Okay, let’s take a look at today’s vocab. Remember, we will give you the pitch accent at the end. Okay, but try and pick it up in the beginning. Here we go.
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Naomi: 誕生日 (tanjōbi)
Peter: Birthday.
Naomi: (slow) たんじょうび (tanjōbi) (natural speed) 誕生日 (tanjōbi)
Peter: Rising on the second syllable ん (n), coming down on the second to last syllable う (u).
Naomi: 誕生日 (tanjōbi)
Peter: Next.
Naomi: おめでとうございます (omedetō gozaimasu)
Peter: Congratulations.
Naomi: (slow) おめでとうございます (omedetō gozaimasu) (natural speed) おめでとうございます (omedetō gozaimasu)
Peter: The first word おめでとう (omedetō), rising on the second syllable め (me) stays high, second word ございます (gozaimasu), rising on the second syllable ざ (za) and falls on the last syllable す (su).
Naomi: おめでとうございます (omedetō gozaimasu)
Peter: Next.
Naomi: 皆さん (mina-san)
Peter: Everyone.
Naomi: (slow) みなさん (mina-san) (natural speed) 皆さん (mina-san)
Peter: Rising on the second syllable な (na), falling on the second to last syllable さ (sa).
Naomi: 皆さん (mina-san)
Peter: Next.
Naomi: 何月 (nan-gatsu)
Peter: What month.
Naomi: (slow) なんがつ (nan-gatsu) (natural speed) 何月 (nan-gatsu)
Peter: Starts high, falls on the second syllable ん (n) stays low.
Naomi: 何月 (nan-gatsu)
Peter: Next.
Naomi: 七月 (shichi-gatsu)
Peter: July.
Naomi: (slow) しちがつ (shichi-gatsu) (natural speed) 七月 (shichi-gatsu)
Peter: Rising on the second syllable and stays high.
Naomi: 七月 (shichi-gatsu)
Peter: Next.
Naomi: 何日 (nan-nichi)
Peter: What day, how many days.
Naomi: (slow) なんにち (nan-nichi) (natural speed) 何日 (nan-nichi)
Peter: Starts high, falls on the second syllable ん (n) stays low.
Naomi: 何日 (nan-nichi)
Peter: Next.
Naomi: 七日 (nanoka)
Peter: The 7th.
Naomi: (slow) なのか (nanoka) (natural speed) 七日 (nanoka)
Peter: Rising on the second syllable の (no) and stays high.
Naomi: 七日 (nanoka)
Peter: Next.
Naomi: ちょっと (chotto)
Peter: Bit, a little.
Naomi: (slow) ちょっと (chotto) (natural speed) ちょっと (chotto)
Peter: Falls after the first syllable, stays low.
Naomi: ちょっと (chotto)
Peter: Next.
Naomi: うれしい (ureshii)
Peter: Happy, glad.
Naomi: (slow) うれしい (ureshii) (natural speed) うれしい (ureshii)
Peter: Rises on the second syllable れ (re), falls on the last syllable い (i).
Naomi: うれしい (ureshii)
Peter: Okay Naomi-sensei, let’s have a look at the usage for some of the words. First word we will look at is
Naomi: ちょっと (chotto)
Peter: Can you give an example sentence, please?
Naomi: これはちょっと高いです。(Kore wa chotto takai desu.)
Peter: This is a bit expensive. So here ちょっと (chotto) is acting as an adverb modifying the adjective.
Naomi: そうですね。ちょっと難しいです。(Sō desu ne. Chotto muzukashii desu.)
Peter: A little difficult.
Naomi: ちょっとハンサムです。(Chotto hansamu desu.)
Peter: A little handsome. ちょっとわかんないですが。(Chotto wakannai desu ga.) How about a little busy?
Naomi: ちょっと忙しいです。(Chotto isogashii desu.)
Peter: A little busy. How about another example?
Naomi: すみません、ちょっと寒いです。(Sumimasen, chotto samui desu.)
Peter: Excuse me but it’s a bit cold.
Naomi: ええ、ちょっと暑いです。(Ee, chotto atsui desu.)
Peter: Hah, it’s a bit hot. So they are obviously fighting over their air conditioner.
Naomi: 私はちょっと暑いです。ピーターさんは?(Watashi wa chotto atsui desu. Pītā-san sa?)
Peter: ちょっと寒いですね。(Chotto samui desu ne.)
Naomi: うそ。(Uso.)
Peter: Finally let’s take a look at a phrase that could be used when you want to congratulate someone. That phrase is
Naomi: おめでとうございます。(Omedetō gozaimasu)
Peter: Congratulations. Now when someone says to you おめでとうございます (omedetō gozaimasu), what did you say to them?
Naomi: ありがとうございます。(Arigatō gozaimasu.)
Peter: Thank you. So it’s that fixed pattern.
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.) In a polite situation, yes.
Peter: Okay, and of course this is the polite Japanese.
Naomi: はい。おめでとうございます、ピーターさん。(Hai. Omedetō gozaimasu, Pītā-san.)
Peter: ありがとうございます、ナオミ先生。(Arigatō gozaimasu, Naomi-sensei.)
Naomi: In a casual situation, we drop ございます (gozaimasu) and say おめでとう (omedetō).
Peter: ありがとう。(Arigatō.) So simple exchange right there, the ございます (gozaimasu) makes it that much more polite.

Lesson focus

Peter: Let’s have a more thorough look at the grammar used in this lesson. What do we cover in this lesson, Naomi-sensei?
Naomi: How to say the date in Japanese.
Peter: And the phrase related to this first appeared in what line?
Naomi: I think that’s in the fifth line. 東さんの誕生日は何月ですか。(Higashi-san no tanjōbi wa nan-gatsu desu ka.)
Peter: What month is your birthday, Higashi? let’s take a look at this sentence component by component. First we have
Naomi: 東さん (Higashi-san)
Peter: Higashi.
Naomi: の (no)
Peter: Possessive. Higashi’s
Naomi: 誕生日 (tanjōbi)
Peter: Birthday. Higashi’s birthday.
Naomi: は (wa)
Peter: Topic marking particle. So we are talking about Higashi’s birthday.
Naomi: 何月 (nan-gatsu)
Peter: What month.
Naomi: 何 (nan) is
Peter: What.
Naomi: 月 (gatsu) is
Peter: Month.
Naomi: So 何月 (nan-gatsu)
Peter: What month, very straightforward.
Naomi: ですか (desu ka)
Peter: Is it. So literally Higashi’s birthday, what month is it? What month is your birthday, Higashi?
Naomi: 今日 (kyō) is today, right? So 今日は何月ですか (kyō wa nan-gatsu desu ka) would be
Peter: What month is today?
Naomi: 今 (ima) means now. 今、何月ですか。(Ima, nan-gatsu desu ka.)
Peter: Now what month is it?
Naomi: 夏 (natsu) is summer. 休み (yasumi) is vacation or holiday. 夏休み (natsuyasumi) is summer vacation. 夏休みは何月ですか。(Natsuyasumi wa nan-gatsu desu ka.)
Peter: What month is summer vacation or what month is your summer vacation. Now in Japan, the normal order for the year, month and day is?
Naomi: Year, month and day.
Peter: So if you ask somebody, what day is it today?
Naomi: 今日は何月何日ですか。(Kyō wa nan-gatsu nan-nichi desu ka.)
Peter: Today is what month, what day and with this, you can ask about various events and particular days.
Naomi: 誕生日は何月何日ですか。(Tanjōbi wa nan-gatsu nan-nichi desu ka.)
Peter: What day is your birthday?
Naomi: Yeah, but instead of what day is your birthday, you usually even in English, you usually ask when is your birthday, that’s more natural, right?
Peter: That’s right.
Naomi: It’s same in Japanese. We usually use いつ (itsu). 誕生日はいつですか。 (Tanjōbi wa itsu desu ka.)
Peter: But for this lesson, since we are focusing on the date, we are kind of crafting it.
Naomi: I think both sentences are fine. 誕生日は何月何日ですか。誕生日はいつですか。(Tanjōbi wa nan-gatsu nan-nichi desu ka. Tanjōbi wa itsu desu ka.) Not much difference.

Outro

Peter: All right. So that’s going to cover today’s lesson. Again stop by and check out the PDF. Inside the PDF, a detailed write up of what we covered today. It’s covering months and days. Okay Naomi-sensei, maybe we should ask all of our listeners when their birthday is.
Naomi: はい。皆さんの誕生日は何月何日ですか。(Hai. Mina-san no tanjōbi wa nan-gatsu nan-nichi desu ka.)
Peter: That’s going to do for today. Be sure to stop by and leave us a comment including your birthday.
Naomi: お願いします。(Onegai shimasu.)
