INTRODUCTION
John: Hi everyone, I'm John.
Risa: And I'm Risa.
John: And welcome to Must-Know Japanese Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 44. Saying Something Depends on Something.
John: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for saying that something depends on something else.
PATTERN
John: For example,
John: "The price depends on the weight."
Risa: 値段は重さによります。 (Nedan wa omosa ni yorimasu.)
Risa: [slow] 値段は重さによります。 (Nedan wa omosa ni yorimasu.)
John: The pattern for saying that something depends on something else has four elements. First, the subject, in this case "the price," followed by the topic-marking particle.
Risa: 値段は (Nedan wa )
John: Second, a noun indicating the element which the first element depends on, in this case "weight."
Risa: 重さ (omosa)
John: Third, a particle indicating cause.
Risa: に (ni)
John: And last, masu-form of the verb meaning "to depend on."
Risa: よります (yorimasu).
John: Altogether, we have... "The price depends on the weight."
Risa: 値段は重さによります。 (Nedan wa omosa ni yorimasu.) [slow] 値段は重さによります。 (Nedan wa omosa ni yorimasu.) [normal] 値段は重さによります。 (Nedan wa omosa ni yorimasu.)
John: The sentence pattern to say that "something depends on something" in Japanese, is the [subject] plus the topic-marking particle, next is the noun that has an influence over or a relation to the subject, plus the particle indicating cause, followed by the verb meaning "depends on."
Again, "The price depends on the weight," is...
Risa: 値段は重さによります。 (Nedan wa omosa ni yorimasu.)
John: So remember, to say that something depends on something else, first say the [subject] plus the topic-marking particle, then state the thing that has an influence over or a relation to the subject, and finally add...
Risa: によります (ni yorimasu).
John: which means "depends on."
John: Here is another example meaning, "The way of thinking depends on the person." First is the subject, "the way of thinking" plus the topic-marking particle.
Risa: 考え方は (Kangae-kata wa )
John: Second, a noun meaning "person."
Risa: 人 (hito )
John: Third, the particle indicating cause.
Risa: に (ni)
John: And last, masu-form of the verb meaning "to depend on."
Risa: よります (yorimasu).
John: Altogether we have...
Risa: 考え方は人によります。 (Kangae-kata wa hito ni yorimasu.) [slow] 考え方は人によります。 (Kangae-kata wa hito ni yorimasu.) [normal] 考え方は人によります。 (Kangae-kata wa hito ni yorimasu.)
