POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Chris: ワンちゃん は 犬ですね。

Chris: 大人はあまり使わないですよね。大人はdogを「犬」と呼びますよね
Naomi: そうですね。小さい子とか、若い女の子とかが使います。

Chris: にわににわにわとりがいる。庭に at a garden 二羽 two birds にわとり chicken.. Ah… so there are two chickens in a garden.
Naomi: そうです。
Chris: えー、難しい。

日本は 子供の数が減っていますね。 In Japan the number of children is decreasing ...I mean fewer and fewer babies are being born every year.

Lesson focus

Chris: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to form embedded wh-questions. So by “wh-questions,” we mean Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How. Naomi-sensei, Can we have a sample sentence?
Naomi: うちがどこかわかる?
Chris: Do you know where my house is? Let's break it down.
Naomi: うち(home, house)が(particle)どこ(where) か(question particle)わかる?(do you know?)
Chris: To insert a “wh-” question into another sentence, attach か to the informal version of the question. In the dialogue, Minoru knew where Sakurako's house is. But if he didn't know, he would have answered....
Naomi: 「どこか わからない」
Chris: I don't know where it is. Can we have more sample sentences?
Naomi: はい。何かわからない
Chris: I don't know what it is.
Naomi: 何時かわからない。
Chris: I don't know what time it is.
Naomi: どうしてかわからない
Chris: I don't know why it is.
Have you got the pattern? The formation was wh question plus か plus わからない, wasn't it?
Next, let's practice with a slightly more challenging sentence. Let's say "Ken doesn't know where the house is." "Ken doesn't know" is...
Naomi: 「ケンはわからない」
Chris: "Where is the house?"
Naomi: 家はどこ
Chris: To combine these two sentences, you have to mark the うち with が
Naomi: ケンは家がどこかわからない。
Chris: OK. Listeners, listen and repeat.
Naomi: ケンは家がどこかわからない。
Chris: OK. Time for recap quiz. Listeners, say "Ken doesn't know what his girlfriend is thinking."直美先生、ヒントお願いします.Could you give us some hints?
Naomi: You have to insert 彼女が何を考えている?(What is the girlfriend thinking?) into ケンはわからない (Ken doesn't know.)
Chris: The answer is?
Naomi: ケンは彼女が何を考えているのかわからない。
Chris: Did you get it right?
Naomi: クリスさん、男の人って、よく、「女が何を考えているかわからない」って言いますよね~。
Chris: ああ、よく言います。Yeah, men often say that they don’t know what women are thinking.
Naomi: クリスさんは分かります?女の人が何を考えているか。
Chris: いやー。分かりませんね。でも、男の考えも分からないですね。
Naomi: 他の人が何を考えているか、分からないっていうことですね。
Chris: そうですね。
Naomi: ま、確かにそうですね。他の人が何を考えているか、分からないですよね。直美先生はどうですか。男が何を考えているか わかりますか。
Naomi: 何も考えていないんじゃないですか?
Chris: そんなことないです。色々考えていますよ。
Naomi: あ、そうですか。じゃ、男の人が何を考えているか、分からないですね。

Outro
