Chris: In this lesson, you'll learn about keigo or extra formal language.
Naomi: 今回は桃屋先生と旅行会社の人が話しています。
Chris: This conversation is between Mr. Momoya and a travel agent.
Naomi: 旅行会社のカウンターではなしていますね。桃屋先生は奥さんと温泉に行きたいみたいです。
Chris: The conversation takes place at a counter in a travel agency. Mr. Momoya wants to go to a hot spring resort.
Naomi: それでは会話を聞いてみましょう。
Chris: Let's listen to the conversation.

Lesson conversation

Naomi: 今度は英語の訳と一緒に聞いてみましょう。
係員: いらっしゃいませ。
Chris: Welcome.
: こちらの番号札をお取りになって、お待ちください。
Chris: Please take this number ticket and wait.
桃屋: はい。
Chris: All right.
係員: 三番の番号札をお持ちのお客様、カウンターへどうぞ。
Chris: Would the customer with ticket number three please come to the counter?
桃屋: あ、はい。
Chris: Uh, yes.
: 今週末、妻と一緒に温泉に行こうと思っているんですが、まだ予約できますか。
Chris: I'm thinking about going with my wife to a hot spring resort this weekend, but can I still make reservations?
係員: どちらの温泉をお考えですか。
Chris: Which hot spring resort are you considering?
桃屋: 名前はちょっと分からないんですが、この写真の温泉旅館です。
Chris: I'm not sure what it's called, but it's the Japanese-style inn and hot spring in this photo.
係員: あ、これは秋田県の旅館ですね。今は夏なので、雪はございませんが…。
Chris: Ah, this inn is in Akita prefecture. It's summer now, so there won't be any snow, but...
桃屋: 大丈夫です。
Chris: That's fine.
係員: 二名様、一泊二日ですね。お煙草はお吸いになりますか。
Chris: So it's two people for two days and one night, is that right? Do you smoke?
桃屋: 吸いません。
Chris
: あ、でも、妻の腕にタトゥーがあるんですが…。
Chris: No, we don't. Oh, but my wife has a tattoo on her arm...
係員: タトゥーがある方は温泉にお入りになれないんですよ・・・。
Chris: Sir, those with tattoos cannot enter hot springs, you know...
: この旅館には貸し切りの露天風呂がないので、他の旅館にしたほうがいいと思います。
Chris: This inn doesn't have a private outdoor bath, so I think it would be better if you went for another inn.
: こちらはいかがですか。
Chris: How do you feel about this one?
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Chris: 温泉・・・いいですね。
Naomi: う~ん。行ったことあります?
Chris: はい。たくさんあります。できたら毎年、二~三回ぐらい行きたいんですけどね。
Naomi: あぁ、特に冬は気持ちいいですよね。
Chris: 冬は気持ちいいですね。
Naomi: 秋から冬に温泉に行くのはね、本当に気持ちいいですよね。雪を見ながらあったかいお風呂に入ったりしてね。
Chris: 最高ですね!
Naomi: ところで、クリスさんはタトゥーがありますか。
Chris: タトゥーはないですんね。日本だと、タトゥーがある人は温泉に入れないんですか?
Naomi: そうですね。温泉だけじゃなくて、プールもだめかもしれませんね。
Chris: So you're not allowed to go into public baths or swimming pools if you have any tattoos. 何でですか? Why is that?
Naomi: 日本語だと tattooは刺青 というのですが、
Chris: いれずみ?
Naomi: そうです。いれずみ。 イレズミは、悪いイメージがあるんです。反社会的(anti-social)なことをしているイメージですね。だから、刺青を見て、「こわいな」と思う日本人はとても多いんです。これは、文化的なものだと思います。
Chris: 他のお客さんのために、お店は タトゥーのある人を 温泉やプールに入れないんですね。
Naomi: そうです。
Chris: Traditionally or culturally in Japan, tattoos carry an anti-social image. Some Japanese people will feel uneasy when they see a tattoo. That's why some hot springs or swimming pools prevent people who have tattoos from entering.
Naomi: でも、絆創膏とかで他のお客さんに見えないようにすれば大丈夫です。
Chris: Oh, that's good to know. Even if you have tattoos, as long as you cover them and make them invisible from others, you'll be allowed in.
Naomi: あとは、貸し切りの温泉を使うのもいいと思います。
Chris: Or you can always go to a private hot spring!
So Naomi just asked me if I would ever see any strange tattoos before. And I explained that I’ve seen the kanji for “foot” on someone’s arm, which was quite funny. And she also pointed out that Japanese people often wear T-shirts that have the death word(?) English for none as well. So it’s kind of even-Steven, I guess.
Naomi: では、単語に入りましょう。

KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Chris: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. 最初の単語は?The first word is?
Naomi: 貸し切り
Chris: “Privately reserved, chartered, booked.” This word is a noun form of a verb, kashikiru, meaning "to privately book" or "to fully reserve".
Naomi: 2つの単語から出来ています。貸す
Chris: "to lend" "to hire"
Naomi: と 切る
Chris: It's a suffix meaning "completely" or "fully". 「貸しきる」の例文お願いします。
Naomi: マイケルジャクソンは東京ディズニーランドを貸し切った。
Chris: "Michael Jackson privately booked the whole of Tokyo Disneyland."
本当ですか?
Naomi: 本当ですよ。1987年に夕方から貸しきったそうです。
Chris: So it's true. やっぱりお金持ちなんですね。
Naomi: それから、レストランとかで、プライベートパーティーがあるときには、入口に
「本日、貸し切り」というカードが出ています。
Chris: When restaurants or cafes are closed for a private party, you'll see a sign saying "本日 貸し切り". Literally, "Today, we're privately booked".
Chris: 次の単語は何ですか?What's the next word?
Naomi: 方 (かた)
Chris: This word has several meanings but in the case of this dialogue, kata means "person".
Naomi: 人"person"と同じ意味ですけれど、もっと丁寧です。
Chris: Kata is a formal or polite way to say "hito" meaning "person" or "people".
Naomi: 例えば、「あの人の名前は何ですか。」
Chris: What's the name of that person?
Naomi: この 「人」を「方」に変えて、「あの方のお名前は何ですか」
ということができます。
Chris: ていねいに話すときは、動詞だけじゃなくて、名詞も丁寧にするんですね。
Naomi: そうですね。名前 じゃなくて お名前。たばこ じゃなくて おたばこ。これ じゃなくて こちら とか。
Chris: So if you're speaking formally, you need to use the formal version of nouns, if there is one. I found this tricky. 難しいですよね。お名前、ご住所・・・Sometimes the polite prefix o- is used and sometimes go- is used....
Naomi: そうなんですよ~。ややこしいですね、すみません。これは是非がんばって覚えていってください。

Lesson focus

Chris: In this lesson, you'll learn how to be extra formal reviewing sonkei-go or honorific language.
Naomi: 尊敬語は前にも勉強しましたが、もう一度復習しましょう。
Chris: Please remember that we use sonkei-go, or honorific language, when describing the actions of someone else to show respect.
Naomi: じゃ、動詞の尊敬の形を復習しましょう。
Chris: In this audio lesson we'll focus on reviewing the regular honorific forms of verbs.
Naomi: 形 formation は "o + [masu stem of a verb] + ni naru or ni narimasu."
Chris: Let us show you some examples.
How do you say "to smoke"?
Naomi: タバコをすう and the verb is すう
Chris: The -masu form is?
Naomi: すいます
Chris: Drop -masu to get the -masu stem.
Naomi: すい
Chris: Attach お in the front
Naomi: おすい
Chris: And add になる
Naomi: お吸いになる。
Chris: So... how do you ask if someone smokes in an extra-formal way?
Naomi: タバコをお吸いになりますか。
Chris: "Do you smoke?" OK, listeners, listen and repeat. "Do you smoke?"
Naomi: タバコをお吸いになりますか。
Chris: (pause)
Let's do one more. How do you say "to return","to go back" or "go home"?
Naomi: 帰る
Chris: What's the -masu stem?
Naomi: 帰り
Chris: Attach お in the front it and になる after it.
Naomi: お帰りになる
Chris: How do you say "The company president has already gone home."
Naomi: 社長はもうお帰りになりました。
Chris: Listeners, listen and repeat. "The company president has already gone home."
Naomi:
Chris: Next, let's check the potential form. To form the potential honorific form of a verb, you simply change なる or なります to it's potential form. Which are なれる or なれます
Naomi: So... あそこで、お煙草をお吸いになれます means?
Chris: "You can smoke over there."
Naomi: ここでは、お煙草をお吸いになれません means?
Chris: "You cannot smoke here."
Can we hear a sentence from the dialogue?
Naomi: タトゥーがある方は温泉にお入りになれないんです。
Chris: "Those with tattoos cannot enter hot springs." Let's break this sentence down.
Naomi: タトゥーがあるかた Those with tattoos は particle 温泉 hot springs に particle お入りになれないんです cannot enter.
Naomi: じゃ、復習しましょう
Chris: Let's recap this lesson with a quiz. Naomi-sensei, how do you say, "It'll take some time, but are you going to wait? "
Naomi: 少し時間がかかりますが、待ちますか?
Chris: OK. listeners, can you rephrase this sentence in an extra formal way?
All you need to change is まちますか。 Don't worry about the first part.
Naomi: (pause.)答えは 「少し時間がかかりますが、お待ちになりますか」です。
Chris: An extra-formal way of saying "are you going to wait?" is おまちになりますか。直美先生、「どちらの温泉をお考えですか。」"Which hot spring resort are you considering?" is also extra formal speech, right?
Naomi: そうです。ダイアログの文章ですね。o + masu stem + copula は、present progressive になります。
Chris: For example?
Naomi: 先生がお待ちだ。
Chris: "The teacher is waiting".
Naomi: なので、「どちらの温泉をお考えですか?」は「どこの温泉を考えていますか?」と言う意味です。
Chris: なるほど・・・。やはり難しいですね。
Naomi: そうですね。Lesson notesに詳しくい説明と、練習問題があるので、是非読んでいてもらいたいですね。
Chris: You can find more detailed explanation and practice questions in the lesson notes. So be sure to read it.Go to JapanesePod101.com to download the lesson notes for this lesson now.
