Yuichi: 祐一です。
Naomi: なおみです。
Jessi: Jessi here. A Japanese discussion gone to the dogs.
Naomi: 今回のストーリーについて、祐一さん、教えてください。
Yuichi: 今回は、公園で犬の散歩をしている２人の話です。
Jessi: In this story, two people are walking their dogs in the park.
Yuichi: 男の人と女の人の会話なんですね。
Yuichi: はい。佐藤高広と早川玲奈（はやかわれな）の会話です。２人は、初めて会ったので、丁寧な日本語を話しています。
Jessi: In this story, they're meeting each other for the first time, so they will be speaking formal Japanese.
Naomi: 文法のポイントは何ですか？
Yuichi: 使役です。
Naomi: ジェシーさん、使役は英語でなんですか？
Jessi: The Causative, which translates to make or let in English. Can you give us an example?
Yuichi: 親が子どもに勉強させる。
Jessi: "The parents make their child study."
Yuichi: それでは聞いてみましょう。

（犬の吠える声）
佐藤高広:こら、ポチ！吠えちゃだめ。すみません。
: （あ、この人、めちゃくちゃ綺麗な人だな。）
早川玲奈:あ、大丈夫ですよ。かわいい洋服を着ていますね。トイプードルですか。
佐藤高広:そうです。そちらこそ、スカートを履かせて、可愛いですね。名前は何と言うんですか。
早川玲奈:マリアです。
: 母が「チワワは寒がりだから」って言って、洋服を身につけさせているんです。
佐藤高広:ああ、抜け毛の防止にもなるそうですね。
早川玲奈:あ、そうなんですか。
: すごいんですよ。母は、マリアにクラシックを聞かせたり、音楽にあわせて、歌わせたりしているんですよ。
佐藤高広:へー。すごいですね。僕は今、ポチに芸を覚えさせているんですよ。
: 一輪車に乗らせて、皿を回させたいんです。
早川玲奈:ええーそんなことさせているんですか？
佐藤高広:今から、そこのドッグカフェで、昼ご飯を食べさせようと思っているんですが、良かったら、一緒に行きませんか？
早川玲奈:あ、いいですね。是非。

佐藤高広:こら、ポチ！吠えちゃだめ。すみません。
English: No, Pochi! No barking! I'm sorry.
: （あ、この人、めちゃくちゃ綺麗な人だな。）
English: (Oh wow, this person is really pretty.)
早川玲奈:あ、大丈夫ですよ。かわいい洋服を着ていますね。トイプードルですか。
English: Oh, don't worry, it's fine! Your dog is wearing such cute clothes! Is it a toy poodle?
佐藤高広:そうです。そちらこそ、スカートを履かせて、可愛いですね。名前は何と言うんですか。
English: That's right! Your dog is also cute wearing a skirt. What's her name?
早川玲奈:マリアです。
English: Her name's Maria.
: 母が「チワワは寒がりだから」って言って、洋服を身につけさせているんです。
My Mom says that Chihuahuas are sensitive to the cold, so she always makes her wear clothes.
佐藤高広:ああ、抜け毛の防止にもなるそうですね。
English: It's also good for preventing shedding, apparently.
早川玲奈:あ、そうなんですか。
English: Oh really?
: すごいんですよ。母は、マリアにクラシックを聞かせたり、音楽にあわせて、歌わせたりしているんですよ。
English: My Mom is something else; she makes Maria listen to classical music and makes her sing along to it.
佐藤高広:へー。すごいですね。僕は今、ポチに芸を覚えさせているんですよ。
English: Wow, that's quite something! Right now, I'm making Pochi learn some tricks.
: 一輪車に乗らせて、皿を回させたいんです。
English: I want to make him learn how to ride a unicycle and spin plates.
早川玲奈:ええーそんなことさせているんですか？
English: Wow, you're making him learn how to do that?!
佐藤高広:今から、そこのドッグカフェで、昼ご飯を食べさせようと思っているんですが、良かったら、一緒に行きませんか？
English: Hey, I'm thinking of going to that dog café over there and getting Pochi a bite to eat. Would you like to come along?
早川玲奈:あ、いいですね。是非。
English: Sounds great!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuichi: 今回のダイアローグみたいに、ペットの散歩で知り合う人がいるみたいですね。
Naomi: あっ、確かに。でも、ペットを飼ってる人って、良い人に思いませんか？
Yuichi: なるほど。動物が好きな人は、良い人みたいなことは、ありますよね。
Jessi: そうですね。
Yuichi: 僕は、ペットは、今飼っていないんですけど、２人は、ペット飼っていますか。
Jessi: はい、私、昔飼っていました。ジャバという名前のラブラドールを飼っていました。
Naomi: へー、ジャバっていうのが名前？
Jessi: そうですね。
Naomi: いいですね。
Jessi: なおみさんは？
Naomi: 私は、ポンタという名前のビーグル犬を飼っています。
Yuichi: 　ポンタですか？
Naomi: はい、ポンタ。あのね、すごいバカなんですけど（笑）　おじいちゃんです。すごい、おじいちゃんです。
Jessi: I used to have a dog, a labrador retriever named Java, and Naomi-sensei has a dog that's apparently very old.
Naomi: そうそう。おじいちゃんです。
Yuichi: ところで、二人は、ペットに服を着せることについてどう思いますか。
Jessi: うーん。そうですね。正直犬がちょっとかわいそうじゃないかなと思いますけど。～寒さ対策のためだったら、多分納得できると思いますけど。
Naomi: うちは、雨が降っている時に、犬にレインコートを着せます。
Jessi: でも、可愛いですね。（笑）
Naomi: すごい喜んで、雨の時でも、外に喜んで行きます。
Jessi: あー、なるほど。

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Jessi: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Yuichi: 最初の単語は、「身に付ける」
Jessi: to wear でも、「着る」も to wearですよね。
「身に付ける」と「着る」は同じですか。
Naomi: 今回のダイアログの場合は、同じと考えていいですね。辞書によると、「身に付ける」は、服を着るという意味があります。「身に付ける」には、他にも意味があるので、気を付けてください。
Jessi: So according to the dictionary, the definition of 身に付ける is to wear something,so just cloth.So in this dialog, 着る and 身に付ける mean the same thing. However, you need to be careful because 身に付ける also has another meaning.
Yuichi: 例えば、外国語を身につけるとか言いますね。
Jessi: That's right. To acquire or to learn is another meaning of 身に付ける.
Naomi: 　技術や知識を手に入れることです。
Jessi: 身に付ける is used when talking about obtaining some kind of knowledge or skill.
例文をお願いします。
Yuichi: ２年で、日本語を身に付けたい。
Jessi: I want to acquire Japanese proficiency in two years.
The next word is
Naomi: 「防止」
Jessi: prevention
Naomi: 今回のダイアローグでは、どう言う風に、使われていました？
Yuichi: 抜け毛の防止
Jessi: which is hair loss prevention. The dialog was talking about dogs, though, so the word shedding was used.
Naomi: そうそうそう。気を付けてね、祐一さん。抜け毛。
Yuichi: はい。「犯罪の防止」
Jessi: ちょっと、早くないですか。（笑）
Yuichi: ま、抜け毛の防止にね、しっかり気を付けます。
Naomi: 「～の防止」という形でよくつかいますね。他の例をお願いします。
Yuichi: 「犯罪の防止」
Jessi: Crime Prevention
Naomi: 動詞だと、「する」をつけて、防止する（to prevent)となりますね。
Jessi: Right. If you attach suru to the word 防止, it becomes a verb. 例文をお願いします。
Yuichi: 目覚まし時計で、朝寝坊を防止する。
Jessi: I prevent myself from oversleeping in the morning by using an alarm clock.
Naomi: 一個じゃ、防止できないですね。（笑）3個ぐらいいりますね。じゃ、最後の単語は何でしょう。 The last word is
Yuichi: めちゃくちゃ
Jessi: extremely, insanely
Yuichi: 「とっても」という意味ですね。
Naomi: そうですね。「とっっても」って感じですね。
Yuichi: そう。でも、これ結構、カジュアルな場面で良く使うんですよね。なので、カジュアルな場面で、「とっても」と言う意味で使って見てください。
Jessi: Right. So Mechakucha is a really casual word, when you use adverb like this.So it is very good to use only with your close friends. So let’s look at an example. Let’s say that Yuichi and Naomi are very close friends and are talking about Naomi's bag.
Yuichi: そのかばんめちゃくちゃ可愛いっすね！
Naomi: でしょぉー。ちゃちゃくちゃ高かったんだよ。
Jessi: Yuichi said Naomi's bag was extremely cute and Naomi said it was extremely expensive
Naomi: 仲の良い友達と使うと、フレンドリーで、とっても良いとおもいます。
Yuichi: そうですね。
Jessi: In this lesson, we'll learn how to form and use the causative in Japanese. The meaning of the causative form can be divided into two categories according to context. This lesson focuses on the coercive causative, which means "to make someone do something." The second usage is going to be covered in the next lesson.
First, let's take a closer look at how to make the causative form. For example, How do you say " to return home."
Naomi: 帰る
Jessi: Then you drop the final "u", and attach "-aseru".
Naomi: 帰らせる
Jessi: As for class 2 verbs, you drop the final "ru", and attach "-saseru". So, 食べる to eat becomes,
Naomi: 食べさせる
Jessi: And the case of two class 3 verbs, suru becomes saseru. Kuru becomes kosaseru.
Now, let's check the sentence structure. What particles do we use when using the causative form? It's important to think about who is forcing the action and who is performing the action.Coulｄ you give us an example from the dialog?
Yuichi: 僕は今、ポチに芸を覚えさせているんですよ。
Jessi: "Right now I'm making Pochi learn some tricks."
Jessi: The one causing the action is usually marked by a topic marking particle wa.And The one performing the action is marked by ni. Let's break down the sentence.
Yuichi: 僕
Jessi: I
Yuichi: は
Jessi: は marks the one causing the action.
Yuichi: 今
Jessi: now
Yuichi: ポチに
Jessi: ni marks the one performing the action
Yuichi: 芸を覚えさせている。
Jessi: making one learn some tricks
And here's what you have to be careful. The one performing the action is marked by ni, but it sometimes can be marked by o, too. In this lesson, we don't want to make things too complicated, so we stick to the particle ni to mark the one performing the action for close of sentences we can always use the particle. Yuichi: じゃあ、例文を見ていきましょう。
Naomi: 私は、いつも祐一さんに重い荷物を運ばせる。
Jessi: I always make Yuichi carry heavy luggage.
Yuichi: そうなんですよね。ま、でも男なので、しょうがないですかね。
Jessi: Right. Because you are a guy, Yuichi. So it can't be helped.
Naomi: ま、あまり持ってくれないですけどね。（笑）
Yuichi: そんなことないですよ。直美さん、質問です。なおみさんは、誰かに何かさせたいことありますか？
Jessi: So Yuichi asks, ‘Naomi, Is there anything that you want to make someone do?’
Naomi: 私は、彼にたばこをやめさせたいです。
Jessi: Naomi wants to make her boyfriend quit smoking.
Naomi: 健康に悪いからですね。
Jessi: そうですね。
Yuichi: はい、今日はcausativeについて勉強しました。次も別の新しいcausativeについて説明しますので、しっかり復習してください。
Naomi: じゃあ、また。
Jessi: See you next time.
