INTRODUCTION
Yuichi: ゆういちです。
Naomi: なおみです。
Jessi: Jessi here. Tell Me What Your Japanese Crystal Ball Says.
Naomi: ゆういちさん、今回のストーリーについて教えてください。
Yuichi: はい。今回は、ある家族が家で話しています。
Jessi: In this lesson, a family is having a conversation at home.
Yuichi: お父さん、お母さんと、女の子が話しています。その女の子は、多分幼稚園生くらいですかね。家族ですから、カジュアルに話しています。
Jessi: A Father, mother and kindergarten-age daughter are talking. They will be speaking informally.
Naomi: 今回の文法のポイントは何でしょう?
Yuichi:「ようだ」
Jessi: As in?
Yuichi: 彼は、旅行に行くようだ。
Jessi: “It seems like he's going on a trip.”
Yuichi: それでは聞いてみましょう。
DIALOGUE
Yuichi: 今度は英語が入ります。
お天気キャスター:今日は、午後から雨の予報ですので、傘を忘れないでください。
Jessi: The forecast for today calls for rain in the afternoon, so don't forget your umbrella.
お天気キャスター:また、今週一杯は、雨が続くようです。
Jessi: Also, it looks like the rain will continue all week.
プチッ(テレビの消える音)
(TV turns off)
娘(幼稚園生):えー、雨が降るのー?
Jessi: Oh, no. It's going to rain?
娘:なーんだ。公園でお弁当食べたかったのにー。
Jessi: Aww, I wanted to eat lunch in the park...
母:そうね。じゃあ、プランを変更する?
Jessi: Yeah. Should we change our plans?
父:いや、大丈夫。
Jessi: Nah, it'll be fine.
父:公園に行けば、晴れるから。
Jessi: When we go to the park, it'll clear up.
娘:本当!?
Jessi: Really?
父:そうだ。お父さんは、晴れ男なんだよ。
Jessi: Yup. I'm a fair-weather man, you know.
娘:晴れ男?
Jessi: Fair-weather man??
父:お父さんが、大事なイベントで、外に出かけるときは、雨が降らないんだよ。
Jessi: When I go out to an important event, it doesn't rain.
父:そういう人を「晴れ男」「晴れ女」って言うんだ。
Jessi: Those kinds of people are called fair-weather men and fair-weather women.
娘:すごーい!!
Jessi: Wow!
母:そう言っても・・・外を見てよ。雨が降りそう。
Jessi: But even so...look outside. It looks like it's going to rain.
父:そんなことを言っているから、雨が降っちゃうんだよ。
Jessi: It rains because you keep saying things like that!
母:予報も言っているし。今日は、家でのんびりしない?
Jessi: That's what the forecast says too. Why don't we just take it easy at home today?
娘:えー、お外行きたい。
Jessi: Aww, I want to go outside.
娘:昨日、照る照る坊主つくったの。だから、雨降らないよ。
Jessi: I made a doll for good weather yesterday. So it won't rain!
父:晴れ男と照る照る坊主で、鬼に金棒だろう?
Jessi: A fair-weather man AND a doll for good weather...that's unbeatable, don't you think?
母:うーん。
Jessi: I don't know...
父:どうして、そんなに嫌なんだよ?
Jessi: Why don't you like the idea?
母:実は、私、雨女なのよ。
Jessi: Well, actually, I'm a rain woman (it rains wherever I go).
父:そうか、雨女だったのか・・・。
Jessi: Oh, so you're a rain woman…
父:それは、困ったな。
Jessi: that makes things tough.
娘:もー、お外行こうよぉー。
Jessi: Come on, let's go outside already!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuichi: 僕は、小学生のとき、運動会の前の日に、照る照る坊主を作ったことがあります。雨が降らないように、お願いをするんですよね。
Jessi: Yuichi made a 照る照る坊主 the day before an athletic meet when he was an elementary school student.
Naomi: 照る照る坊主って、英語でなんて言うんですか?
Jessi: うーん、照る照る坊主... this is something that’s a traditional Japanese object, so there's not a word for it in English. But basically what it is is a little doll made of cloth or paper that is supposed to drive away rainy weather. So when you want it to stop raining, or want to prevent it from raining, you make one of these and hang it up by a window. I called it a doll, but the shape looks kind of like a ghost, Don’t you think?
Naomi: う〜ん。
Yuichi: はい。
Jessi: It’s gotten no leg. It’s just a head, like a cape.
Yuichi: おばけですね。
Jessi: It's kind of cute looking, I think.
Yuichi: なおみさんは、作ったことありますか?
Naomi: うーんと、運動あんまり好きじゃないんで、運動会の前には作りませんでした。
Yuichi: あ、なるほど。
Jessi: 雨が降ってほしい、みたいな。
Naomi: 雨降ってほしい。雨降れ降れ降れ・・・(笑)でも、遠足の前には作りました。
Yuichi: あ、なるほど。アメリカには、照る照る坊主みたいなのはないんですか?
Jessi: ないですね。でも、歌はあるんですけど、あの・・・"rain rain, go away~ Come again another day~" みたいな。
Naomi: あ〜、かわいい!
Jessi: 歌はあるんですけど。
Naomi: ありますよね。聞いたことあります。でも、日本にも「照る照る坊主、照る坊主〜、明日天気にしておくれ〜♪」っていう歌があります。
Yuichi: はい、そうですね。あの、ちょっと話は変わりますけど、僕、照る照る坊主を、最高6つくらい作ったことありますよ。
Naomi: 何で6つも作るの?
Yuichi: え?それは、やっぱりこう、雨が降ってほしくないのでたくさん作った、ということです。
Naomi: で、その時は晴れたんですか?
Yuichi: はい、晴れました。
Naomi: へー、よかったですね。
Jessi: よかったですね。

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Jessi: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Yuichi: まず最初は、鬼に金棒
Jessi: an ogre with an iron club
Naomi:「鬼」は?
Jessi: an ogre
Naomi:「金棒」っていうのは、金属の棒のことですね。
Jessi: So this refers to a metal rod, or a club.
Yuichi: 鬼は強いですよね。で、その強い鬼が金棒を持っているので、もっと強くなるという意味です。「強いものが、ますます強くなる」という意味ですね。
Jessi: Right, so this expression refers to how an ogre which is already strong itself becomes even stronger when it has an iron club - so the meaning is that something that is already strong becomes even stronger.
Yuichi: では「鬼に金棒」の例はありますか?
Naomi: う〜ん、あ、例えばサッカー。いい監督といい選手の組み合わせ。
Jessi: Ah, so for example, “a good soccer coach plus a good soccer team” makes a really good combination.
Yuichi: はい。いい監督といい選手がいれば、よりいいチームが作れる、ということになりますね。
Naomi: 強いチームが作れますよね。
Yuichi: はい。じゃあ、他に例文をお願いします。
Naomi: このチームに君が入れば、鬼に金棒だ。
Jessi: “If you join this team, we'll be even stronger.”
Yuichi: 次は?
Naomi: のんびりする
Jessi: to feel at ease, to relax, to take it easy
Naomi:「のんびり」は、ゆっくりしていることです。じゃ、例文をお願いします。
Yuichi: 休日は、のんびりしたい。
Jessi: "I want to relax on the days off."
Naomi: のんびりした人のことを「のんびり屋」とか「のんびり屋さん」なんて言いますよね。
Jessi: Here's a related word - のんびり屋 refers to an easygoing person. The word at the end, 屋(ya), can be attached to a personality trait, meaning "someone who has that personality trait."
Yuichi: なおみさんは、のんびり屋さんですよね?
Naomi: なんでわかりました?すごいのんびり屋です。(笑)
Yuichi: この「屋」ですが、他にも
Naomi: 頑張り屋
Jessi: a person who tries hard, a person who makes an effort
Naomi: ジェシーは、頑張り屋ですね。
Jessi: あ、そうですか?
Yuichi: はい。
Naomi: そう思います。
Yuichi: そうですよね。ジェシーさんは頑張り屋だから、日本語がこんなにうまく話せるようになったんだと思います。
Jessi: ちょっと、なんて言えばいいか・・・。(笑)
Naomi: 困りますよね。
Yuichi: 晴れ男、雨女は、PDFに詳しい説明を載せておいたので、チェックしてください。
Naomi: はい。面白い言葉だと思います。

Lesson focus

Jessi: In this lesson, we'll focus on ようだ. Using ようだ, the speaker can make a judgment or conjecture based on what they see or saw.
Yuichi:「ようだ」は英語で、どう言いますか?
Jessi: ようだ would be something similar to "it looks like ---" or "it seems like ---" in English.
Naomi: 例えば、「雨が降った」は
Jessi: “It rained.”
Naomi: 「雨が降ったようだ」は
Jessi: “It seems like it has rained.” See that formation? It's not that hard, right?
Ok, so now let's practice. I'll give a situation, and Naomi-sensei is going to make a judgment based on what she sees. Here’s the situation. Yuichi keeps glancing at his watch.
Naomi: ゆういちさんは、急いでいるようだ。
Jessi: “Yuichi seems to be in a hurry.”
Yuichi: 時間がないので、時計を何度も見ているんですね。 もう一つ、例を見ましょうか。
Jessi: All right. Here’s the next situation. Naomi's stomach grumbling during the recording.
Yuichi: なおみさんは、お腹が減っているようですね。
Jessi: “It seems that Naomi is hungry.” Or you could also say...
Yuichi: お昼を食べてないようです。
Jessi: “It seems that Naomi hasn't eaten lunch.”
Yuichi: では、次に「ようだ」と「そうだ」の違いを勉強しましょう。
Jessi: Okay, so now let's take a look at the difference between ようだ and そうだ. We covered そうだ in Lower Intermediate season 4 lessons 17,18,19 and 20. If you need to, go back and review those lessons. The lesson numbers are also written in the PDF.
Yuichi: では、今から二つの文を聞いてください。違いが分かりますか?
Naomi: 1. あそこのケーキ屋のケーキは、おいしいようだ。
2. あそこのケーキ屋のケーキは、おいしそうだ。
Yuichi: ニュアンスがちょっと違いますよね。
Jessi: Right. In the first sentence, which uses ようだ, the speaker makes a judgment based on what they see - in this case, not the cake itself, but more like the situation or circumstances surrounding it. For example, maybe the person saw a long line in front of that cake shop or something. Then they can say, おいしいようだ。
Yuichi: そうです。じゃ、二番目の文は?
Jessi: The second sentence which uses そうだ, means that the speaker has actually seen the cake itself and made a judgement - that it looks good.
Yuichi: じゃあ、次のシチュエーションをお願いします。
Jessi: The next situation is you are at a watch store, where you see a very shiny watch with diamonds. What could you say about this watch?
Naomi: この時計は、高そうだ。
Jessi: “This watch looks expensive.”
Then, at that same watch store, you saw a watch being protected by a security guard. What could you say about that watch?
Naomi: あの時計は、高いようだ。
Jessi: “It seems that that watch is expensive.”
Okay, みなさん、どうでしたか。Did you understand the difference between ようだ and そうだ?
Yuichi: はい、今回は「ようだ」と「そうだ」の勉強をしました。

Outro

Yuichi: それでは、また。
Naomi: さようなら。
Jessi: Until next time!
