INTRODUCTION
Yuichi: ゆういちです。
Naomi: なおみです。
Jessi: Jessi here. I Am Already Prepared for Our Japanese Adventure.
Naomi: ゆういちさん、今回のストーリーについて教えてください。
Yuichi: はい。今回は、レポーターが歴女の家に行きます。
Naomi: 「歴女」というのは、「歴史が好きな女の人」なんですね。
Jessi: This story takes place at the house of a 歴女, or a girl who is really into history.
Yuichi: レポーターと歴女の会話ですね。
Jessi: The conversation is between a news reporter and the 歴女. They will be speaking formally.
Naomi: 今回の文法のポイントは?
Yuichi: 「ておく」と「てある」の違いです。
Jessi: In this lesson, you will learn the difference between ておく and てある.
Yuichi: それでは聞いてみましょう。
DIALOGUE
Yuichi: 今度は英語が入ります。
レポーター:みなさんは、「歴女」という言葉を聞いた事はありますか?
Jessi: Everyone, have you ever heard the word "rekijo"?
レポーター:「歴史が好きな女の人」を短くして、「歴女」ですが、今回は、そんな「歴女」さん、山田花さんのお家を訪問したいと思います。
Jessi: "Rekijo" is made by shortening the phrase "girls ('joshi') who like history ('rekishi')." This time, I'd like to visit the house of Ms. Yamada, who is one of those "rekijo."
(ピンポーン)
(Doorbell)
山田花:はーい。(ガチャ)
Jessi: Coming! (door opens)
レポーター:こんにちは、よろしくお願いします。
Jessi: Thank you for having me.
山田花:こちらこそ。
Jessi: Thank you for coming!
レポーター:お邪魔します。
Jessi: Please excuse my intrusion.
(歩く音)
(footsteps)
レポーター:おっと、ものすごい数のプラモデルが飾ってありますね。
Jessi: Wow, you've got a large number of plastic models on display!
山田花:はい。これは、戦国武将のプラモデルなんです。
Jessi: Yes. These are plastic models of feudal warlords.
レポーター:おおお、本棚は、さすがに歴史関係の本ばかりですね。
Jessi: Ohh, and as expected, your bookshelf is filled with history-related books.
レポーター:これは年代順に並べてあるんですね?
Jessi: It looks like they are in chronological order?
山田花:はい。これが、私の歴史ファイルです。
Jessi: Yes. And this is my history file.
(ページをめくる音)
(pages turning)
山田花:集めた資料をファイルしておくんです。
Jessi: I file away documents I've collected.
山田花:あと、休日に訪れたお城の写真も入れておきますね。
Jessi: I also put in pictures of castles I've visited on my days off.
山田花:これを眺めるのが好きなんですよー。
Jessi: I just love looking at them!
レポーター:すごいですねー。
Jessi: That's quite something!
レポーター:ところで、どうして歴史が好きになったんですか?
Jessi: By the way, how did you come to like history?
山田花:うーん。前に付き合っていた彼氏が、歴史のゲームをしているのを見て、面白そうだな・・・と思ったのが、きっかけです。
Jessi: Hmm...I got into it after seeing my ex-boyfriend play historical video games, and I thought they looked interesting.
レポーター:なるほど。
Jessi: I see.
山田花:気付いたら、彼氏よりも歴史の方が好きになっていましたが・・・ははは・・・。
Jessi: Before I knew it, I came to like history more than my boyfriend...ha ha ha...
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuichi: 今回のテーマは、歴女でした。
Naomi: 歴女ねぇ・・・。じゃあ、歴男(れきだん)っているの?歴男(れきおとこ)とか歴男(れきお)とか。
Jessi: あ〜、いい質問ですね。
Yuichi: なるほど。歴史が好きな男の人、ということですか?
Naomi: そう、そう、そう。
Yuichi: うーん、ま、そういう人は多いんじゃないですかね。
Naomi: 例えば、歴男(れきお)とか歴男(れきだん)っていう言葉はあるんですかね?
Yuichi: あ〜、言えるとは思うんですけど、やっぱりクローズアップされるのは、「歴女」だと思いますよ。
Jessi: ふ〜ん、それはどうしてですか?
Yuichi: まああの、男の人は普通日本の歴史が好き、というのがステレオタイプであると思うんですけど、女の人はそうでもない、ということがあります。だから、歴史が好きな女の人は珍しい、ということで「歴女」という言葉ができたんだと思います。
Jessi: う〜ん、なるほどね。It might be because people have this image that men like history, and women aren't particularly interested in it... so when a woman is really into history, it's seen as rare or unusual. It’s a kind of like what we saw with the 弁当男子, if you remember. They were focused on more because they were seen as somewhat rare. I think it's the same in this case.
Yuichi: そうですね。このダイアログの歴女みたいに、今回は、ゲームをして、戦国武将とかが好きになる人が多いようです。
Jessi: ゲームに出てくる戦国武将がかっこいいんでしょうね。
Naomi: あと、NHKの大河ドラマから歴史が好きになった、なんていう話も聞きますよね。
Jessi: So - it's interesting, some people actually develop crushes on historical figures in Video games, because they're presented as really strong and handsome. Other people watch Samurai dramas on the channel NHK and develop an interest in Japanese history that way.
Naomi: じゃあ、アメリカに歴女とか、歴史がものすごく好きな人って、多いんですかね?
Jessi: あー、いないと思います。私聞いたことないですね。
Naomi: あ、こういうふうにね、今回のダイアログのように、本当にのめり込んでるような人っていうのは、あんまり・・・?
Jessi: いないと思いますね、はい。
Naomi: あー、なるほど。私も、そんなに詳しくはないんですけど、日本の歴史って面白いですよね、ゆういちさん?
Yuichi: そうですね、はい。中学校の時から勉強しましたし、とても楽しかったです。
Naomi: なるほど。
Yuichi: それでは、皆さんの国には「歴女」「歴男」はいますか?教えてください。

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Jessi: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Yuichi: 最初の単語は、年代順
Jessi: chronologically. Let's break it down into two parts.
Yuichi: 年代
Jessi: means "generation," and
Yuichi: 順
Jessi: means "order."
Naomi: これは「順番」の順なんですね。じゃ、順を使った単語を確認しましょうか。
Jessi: The latter word, 順, can attach to many words to express the order of something. For example,
Naomi: 番号順
Jessi: “the numbering order”
Naomi: 書き順
Jessi: “stroke order”
Naomi: 手順
Jessi: “procedure”
Naomi: じゃ、ゆういちさん、例文をお願いします。
Yuichi: 漢字の書き順を覚える必要がありますか。
Jessi: "Do we need to remember the stroke order for Kanji?"
Naomi: うーん、よくされる質問ですけどね。
Jessi: そうですね。
Naomi: 先生、どうでしょう?
Yuichi: そうですね。基本的な書き順は、覚えた方が役に立つと思います。左から右に、上から下に書く、ということですね。
Jessi: そうですね。I agree! This is really important. Could you give us one more sample sentence?
Naomi: プリントに、詳しい手順が書いてあります。
Jessi: "The detailed procedure is written on the handout."
Jessi: And the next word?
Naomi: 眺める
Jessi: to view, to gaze at
Naomi: 「見る」と意味は似ています。例文をお願いします。
Yuichi: 景色を眺める
Jessi: "to gaze at the scenery"
Naomi: 「眺める」という言葉は、遠くのものを見るときに使いますよね。
Jessi: Right, so 眺める implies that you look at something in the distance.
Yuichi: あ、でも、ダイアログでは「これを眺めるのが好きなんですよー。」(I just love looking at them!) と使われていました。
「これ」というのはファイルですよね。このファイルはそんなに遠くにないんじゃないですかね。
Naomi: あ〜、確かにそうですね。
Yuichi: それは、どうしてでしょうかね。
Naomi: あの、辞書をひくと「眺める」には、遠くのものを見るように、全体を見る、つまり細かいものを読むんじゃなくて、広い範囲をぱらぱらと見る、という意味もあるんだそうです。
Jessi: So this 眺める that with in the dialogue means something more like "to gaze vacantly at." You are not looking at something in detail, rather you are just casting a wide glance. Can we hear another sample sentence, please?
Yuichi: 子供の時の写真を眺めながら、いろいろなことを考えた。
Jessi: "I thought about a lot of things as I gazed at pictures from my childhood."

Lesson focus

Jessi: In this lesson, we're going to learn ておく.
Now, the verb おく means "to put" or "to set". When おくfollows another te form of a verb, it becomes a helping verb and means "to do something in advance for future convenience".
Can we hear a sample sentence?
Naomi: 部屋を掃除しておく。
Jessi: “I (will) clean the room.”
Yuichi: どうしてですか。
Jessi: Why is that?
Naomi: 友達が来るからです。
Jessi: Here, you perform an action in preparation for something. In this case, Naomi is going to clean the room because her friend is visiting.
Naomi:「部屋を掃除する」も
Jessi: “I'm going to clean the room.”
Naomi: ですね。でも、「ておく」を使って、
Yuichi:「部屋を掃除しておく」
Naomi: というと、「何かのために」部屋を掃除する、何か理由があるので部屋を掃除する、という意味なんですね。
Jessi: So both 部屋を掃除する and 部屋を掃除しておく can be translated as "I'm going to clean the room" in natural English. But 部屋を掃除しておく means that you're going to clean your room in preparation for something or to get ready for something.
Naomi: じゃ、もう少し例を見てみましょう。
Jessi: Let's look at more examples.
Yuichi: レストランを予約しておきました。
Jessi: “I made a reservation at a restaurant.”
Naomi: 人気のあるレストランはとても混みますから、待たなくてもいいように、予約をしたんですね。
Jessi: So in this case, Yuichi made a restaurant reservation so that he doesn't have to wait to get in.
Naomi: ゆういちさん、これ「レストランを予約しました」でも大丈夫なんですよね。
Yuichi: はい、大丈夫です。でも「予約しておきました」というと、「待たなくてもいいように」とか「いい席に座れるように」とかを考えて、予約をした感じがしますね。
Jessi: 予約しました by itself is also okay. But 予約しておきました implies that you were thinking about why you should reserve in advance - so you don't have to wait, so you can get a good seat - that kind of thing.
Okay now, let's hear examples talking about what we should do in advance for coming to Japan. あの、私の友達が今度日本に来るんですが、日本に来る前に、何をしておいたらいいですか。
Yuichi: うーん、やっぱり、日本語を勉強しておくといいと思います。
Jessi: あ、でも3日間だけなんです。
Naomi: あ、3日間だけ!じゃ、どうでしょうね。「すみません」と「ありがとうございます」を覚えておけば、十分ですかね。
Yuichi: あ、それなら、All About のレッスンを見ておけば大丈夫だと思いますよ。
Naomi: なるほどね、それが一番早いですね。
Jessi: なるほど。いいと思います!
Yuichi: あと、「ておく」と「てある」の違いを、PDFに詳しく書いておきましたので、チェックしてください。
Jessi: Right! If you want to know the difference between ておく and てある, be sure to check out the PDF.

Outro

Jessi: Well, that's going to do it for this lesson. See you next time.
Yuichi: さよなら。
Naomi: じゃ、また。
