DIALOGUE

Yuichi: 今度は英語が入ります。
さくら:ねえねえ、愛。最近彼とどうなった?
Jessi: Hey, Ai. Whatever happened with that guy recently?
愛:彼の気持ちがわからない。彼、気分屋だし・・・。
Jessi: I don't know how he feels. He's pretty moody.
さくら:はい、これプレゼント。
Jessi: Here's a present for you!
愛:何?この本。
Jessi: What? What's this book?
愛:『B型自分の説明書』。おおー。
Jessi: "An Instruction Manual for Your Type-B Self." Whoa!
さくら:これ読むと、彼の気持ちがわかるかもよ。
Jessi: If you read this, you might be able to understand how he feels.
翼:あ、愛ちゃん。
Jessi: Oh hey, Ai.
愛:あ、つ、つ、翼君!ひさしぶり。ははは。
Jessi: Ah, Ts-Ts-Tsubasa! Long time, no see, ha ha!
愛:どうしたの?い、今から授業?
Jessi: What's up? Y-You have class now?
翼:そうそう。たまには、授業に出ないと、卒業できないからね。
Jessi: Yeah. 'Cause If you don't show up to class every once in a while, you can't graduate, sooo...
翼:あ、その本、今すごい人気だよねー。
Jessi: Oh, those books are really popular right now, huh!
翼:あれ?愛ちゃんはB型?
Jessi: Wait, Ai, are you a Type-B person?
愛:う、ううん。わたしはA型。
Jessi: No, no. I'm Type A.
翼:ちょっと見せて。
Jessi: Lemme see.
愛:あ、うん。もちろん!!
Jessi: Ah, sure! Go ahead!
さくら:(小さい声で)ねぇねぇ、愛、この人?
Jessi: Hey, Ai, is this the guy?
愛:(小さい声で)そう!
Jessi: Yeah!
翼:へー。B型は変わっているって言われるとうれしい。・・・へー。
Jessi: Wow, it says that Type-B people like to be called strange or unusual. Hmm...
愛:や、やっぱりさ、翼君も、個性的だね・・・って言われるとうれしいの?
Jessi: S-So, I guess you like to be called unique, too, Tsubasa?
翼:え?俺?別に。ていうか、俺、O型だし。
Jessi: Huh? Me? Not really. I mean, I'm Type-O anyway.
愛:ええ?B型じゃないの?
Jessi: What? You're not Type-B?
翼: ああ、よく間違えられるけど、O型。
Jessi: Yeah, I always get mistaken for it, but I'm Type-O.
翼:しかも、俺、占い絶対信じないし。
Jessi: Besides, I don't even believe in that kind of stuff.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuichi: 「B型の説明書」ってダイアログに出てきたんですけども、読んだことはありますか。
Naomi: え?何これ、本なの?
Yuichi: はい、そうですよ。本です。これはとてもよく売れた本なんですけども、B型の人はどういう性格かということがたくさん書いてあるんですね。なので、たとえばB型の人が、あの、自分で読んで、「あ、これ私!これ、合ってる、合ってる、合ってる」っていう風に読んだり、たとえばB型のことを知りたい人が読んでB型のことを理解しようとするために読む本ですね。とても面白いですよ。
Jessi: So basically this book is called 'The Instruction Manual for Blood Type B People', right?
Naomi: なるほどね。'Instruction Manual'?!
Jessi: Right. I guess when you literally translate it, 説明書, it's 'instruction manual'. But basically it's a book that's a part of a series about different blood type personalities, so if you open this book about blood type B people, there are all these different facts, like 'Blood type B people are this, this, and this' - and they're really popular in Japan, right? They sold a lot of copies.
Naomi: なるほど。
Yuichi: ちなみにこのB型の説明書だけじゃなくて、『A型の説明書』『AB型の説明書』『O型の説明書』も出ました。
Jessi: So there are books for the other types, such as A, O and AB.
Yuichi: でもB型の説明書が一番売れたみたいですけどね。
Jessi: えー、そうですか。
Yuichi: はい。
Naomi &Jessi: へー。
Yuichi: ところで、ダイアログの翼君っていたんですけれども、彼についてどう思いましたか。
Naomi: 若者っぽいしゃべり方しますね。
Jessi: Mm, he sounds really young when he speaks.
Yuichi: そうですね。
Jessi: Like a lot of the language that young people use?
Naomi: そう。「ていうか」「俺O型だしー」なんてね...
Yuichi: そうですね。これ、あの、この「ていうか」っていうやつですね、これやっぱり年配の人はあまり好きじゃない表現ですよね。やっぱりでも、友達同士では使うのにはとてもいいと思いますね。だけど先生とか、上司には絶対使ってはいけません。
Jessi: Mm, right. This expression ていうか is really really informal, so it's OK to use among friends, but you would not want to use it with your teachers or your superiors. And by the way, what does it mean, ていうか?
Naomi: えーとね、文書にもよるんですけど、この場合は「そうじゃなくて」っていう意味ですね。
Jessi: Mm, so it depends on the context but basically, Aっていうか B means 'not A but B'.
Naomi: Right.
Yuichi: そうですね。あと、翼君の「俺、O型だし」と「俺、占い絶対信じないし」のこの「し」っていうこの最後の言葉も、若者言葉ですね。
Jessi: Mm, yeah, I hear this a lot, actually. And if you were to look up this し in a textbook, it's the same one that you use when you're giving more than one reason.
Naomi: Right. 例えば「このカレーは、安いし、おいしいし、私はとても好きです」
Jessi: “I really like this curry because it's cheap, it tastes good, etc.” So, what is the difference between this し and the し used by young people?
Yuichi: I think they're basically the same. But, they tend to use it even when they're not really talking about reasons, just for emphasis.
Naomi: そうですね。「し」で文章を終わりにすると、なんとなく若者っぽいですね。これもカジュアルなので、先生や上司には使わない方がいいと思います。
Jessi: Right, so please be careful about using this in formal situations.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Jessi: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Yuichi: The first word is 気分屋
Jessi: moody, temperamental
Yuichi: これ、英語に翻訳するのが、少し難しいですね。
jessi: そうですね。
Naomi: あ、そうなんですね。例えば、自分の気分のいい時は、とてもやさしくてとってもいい人だけど、気分が悪い時、機嫌が悪い時は、話しかけても無視しちゃうとか、ちょっといじわるなこと言うとか。そういう人のことですね。気分によって言うことや態度が変わるような人のことを「気分屋」と言います。
Jessi: なるほど!So, for example someone who is really nice when they're in a good mood but completely ignores people when they're in a bad mood... that would be a 気分屋. So, someone whose attitude changes frequently along with their mood.
Naomi: そうです。
Yuichi: 結構これ、悪い意味で使いますね。
Naomi: 間違いなく、悪い意味ですよね。
Yuichi: なおみさんは、気分屋ですか。
Naomi: え、何?私のこと気分屋だと思ってますか?!その質問がショック!
Yuichi: という風に悪いニュアンスがあるので、気をつけて使ってください。
Naomi: はい。次の単語は?
Yuichi: 説明書
Jessi: operating manual, instruction book
Let's break down the kanji for this word. They can be divided into two parts.
Yuichi: 説明
Jessi: explanation, instruction
Yuichi: 書
Jessi: book, document
Yuichi: この二つ目の漢字の「書」には、色々な単語が前につきますよね。
Jessi: Right, you can attach several kinds of words to 書. For example,
Naomi: ビジネス書
Jessi: business books
Naomi: 専門書
Jessi: specialized books
Yuichi: 本屋さんに行くと、「ビジネス書」があるコーナーとか、「専門書」があるコーナーという風に書いてあると思います。
Naomi: この場合「書」は “book”、「本」の意味ですね。
Jessi: Right, and you can find sections in bookshops that actually use these different names.
Yuichi: ところで、この「説明書」は、電化製品を買うときに、必ず付いてきますよね。
Jessi: Right. 説明書 always come with home appliances when you buy them.
Naomi: では、次の単語をお願いします。
Yuichi: 変わっている
Jessi: strange
Naomi: これは形容詞 adjective ですね。別の日本語で言うと「変な」という意味です。同じ漢字を使っています。例えば、
Yuichi: あの人の服は、変わっているね。
Jessi: “That person's clothes are strange.”
Naomi: あの人の服は変だね。
Jessi: This also means “that person's clothes are strange.”「変わっている」と「変だ」は、同じ意味ですか。
Naomi: うーん。「変だ」の方がずっと強いですね。
Yuichi: そうですね。
Jessi: なるほど。So 変 sounds a lot stronger than 変わっている, so I think it's a bit safer to use 変わっている if you're going to use one of them!
Naomi: そうですね。ま、あの、unique みたいなニュアンスだと思います。
Yuichi: 「変わっている」がですよね。だから「なおみさん、変だね」って言われたら、少しショックですよね。
Naomi: うん、悲しいですね。
Yuichi: 悲しいですよね。でも「あ、直美さんって、変わっていますよね」って言われたら、どうですか。
Naomi: ま、それもうれしくはないですけど、「変」よりはいいですよね。
Yuichi: 「変」よりはましですかね。
Jessi: じゃ、「変だ」っていうのが ”strange”、「変わってる」っていうのが “unique” っていう感じに近いですね。あと「変わっている」の元の動詞は何ですか? What's the original verb from 変わっている?
Yuichi: 変わる
Jessi: to change
Yuichi: 例えば、「ジェシーの性格が変わった。」
Jessi: “Jessi's personality has changed.” えー、でもそんなことないと思いますよ。
Naomi: ね!じゃ、こんな文章はどうでしょう?How about this sentence?
「ジェシーは、日本語を話すと性格が変わる。」“Does your personality change when you speak Japanese?”
Jessi: うーん、どうでしょうかね...。
Naomi: 私は変わるかな、と思ってたんですけど。
Jessi: あ、本当ですか。
Yuichi: 少し変わるかもしれないですね。というわけで、「ジェシーは日本語を話すと、性格が変わる・・・かもしれません。」この「と」が、今日の文法ポイントです。

Lesson focus

Jessi: In this lesson, we'll look at the と conjunction. This と is similar to the たら that we covered in the previous lesson. It implies that when A happens, B also happens. The difference is that the event that occurs in B happens naturally when you use と. It's a natural consequence of A. Could you give us an example?
Yuichi: このボタンを押すと、おつりが出ます。
Jessi: “When you press this button, your change will come out.”
Jessi: Let's break down this sentence.
Yuichi: このボタン
Jessi: this button
Yuichi: 押す
Jessi: to press
Yuichi: このボタンを押すと、
Jessi: So this means "when you press this button". And next we have?
Yuichi: おつりが出ます。
Yuichi: おつり
Jessi: change
Yuichi: 出ます
Jessi: come out
Yuichi: おつりが出ます
Jessi: So this means "change comes out".
Naomi: First, このボタンを押す then next おつりが出ます.
Jessi: So, it means that when you press this button, the change always comes out.
Naomi: そうですね。ま、あれば、ですね。Right. If there is any change.
Jessi: So note that the と was attached to the informal present form of the verb 押す. Next, let's use the target grammar in different situations. Listen closely to the conversation among us. Yuichi wants to lose weight and asks us for advice.
Yuichi: あ~、最近太ったな、運動してないから。あ~、痩せたいなあ。
Naomi: 朝、バナナを食べると、痩せますよ。
Jessi: 毎日走ると、痩せますよ。
Jessi: So did you get that? Naomi said
Naomi: 朝、バナナを食べると、痩せますよ。
Jessi: “If you eat a banana every morning, you will get thin.”
Jessi: And then I said,
Yuichi: 毎日走ると、痩せますよ。
Jessi: “If you run everyday, you will get thin.”
Yuichi: ちなみに、僕はダイエットをしたことがあるんですけども、レコーディングダイエットがおすすめです!
Jessi: レコーディングダイエット?何ですか?
Naomi: 食べたものを書くと、やせるんでしょ?
Yuichi: そうなんです!僕、このレコーディングダイエットをしたら、3キロ痩せました。
Jessi: え、ていうか、すごい細いですけど、ゆういちさん。
Naomi: ですね!
Yuichi: このレコーディングダイエットのおかげです。
Naomi: いやいやいやいや!
Jessi: Let's listen to one more conversation between Yuichi and Naomi.
Yuichi: なおみさん、僕、冬嫌いなんですよね。
Naomi: あ、私もそう。冬になると寒いし。
Yuichi: 早く春にならないかな。
Naomi: そうですよね。春になると、暖かいし、桜が見れるしね。
Jessi: Did you notice how Naomi used と?
Naomi: 冬になると寒いし。
Jessi: “In winter, it's cold.” Literally, when it becomes winter, it's cold.
Naomi: 春になると、暖かいし、桜が見れるし。
Jessi: “In spring, or when it becomes spring, it's warm and you can see cherry blossoms.” 早く春になるといいですね。So I hope spring comes quickly. So in Lesson 1, we went over たら and in this lesson, Lesson 2, we went over と. They're quite similar, and if you find yourself wondering about the real differences, don't miss the next lesson. There, we'll compare and contrast たら and と. All right, that's all for this lesson!
Yuichi: このレッスンは、ここまでで。

Outro

Naomi: じゃまた。
Jessi: See you next time!
