Yuichi: わあ、若い!
Everybody: (laughing)
Jessi: そうですね。I first came to Japan when I was still a high school student and it was first time riding in the airplane by myself. So I was pretty nervous.
Naomi: ねー、16歳じゃねー。そうですよね。

Naomi: で、今日の会話に出てきたジャックさんなんですが、日本で和樹君と会うみたいですね。

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Jessi: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Yuichi: The first word we look at is 右側 (right side) Let's break down the word. 右(Jessi ; right)、 側(side) 右側(right side) 右側の反対は?
Naomi: 左側 (left side) 左がleft 側がside なので左側left side ですね。
Jessi: How about the seats on the airplane? Like aisle-side seat and window-side seat. How do you say aisle in Japanese?
Yuichi: 通路
Jessi: Then, Aisle side?
Yuichi: 通路側
Jessi: How do you say window?
Naomi: 窓
Jessi: Window side?
Naomi: 窓側 どちらが好きですか?窓側と通路側。
Jessi: あーそうですねー。私は窓側が好きですね。I like a window side better.
Yuichi: 僕は通路側ですね。
Naomi: 何で?
Yuichi: あの、トイレに行けます。
Naomi: あー、確かに!
Jessi: The next word we look at is...
Naomi: 緊張する to feel nervous
Yuichi: 直美先生、最近擬態語のレッスンを始めましたよね?
Jessi: Naomi-sensei, you recently started an onomatopoeia lesson, didn't you?
Naomi: あっ、はい、あの始めました。擬態語のレッスンですね。
Yuichi: この緊張するを擬態語で言うとどうなりますか。
Naomi: ドキドキする。かな?
Jessi: 心臓がドキドキする。 The heart goes thump thump??
Naomi: そうですね。なんか、心臓がドキッドキッ、ドキッドキッって感じ。
Yuichi: はい。
Naomi: わかります?
Yuichi: 緊張するとハートがドキドキしますね。
Jessi: That makes sense.
Yuichi: このドキドキは「緊張する」時以外に、いつ使いますか?
Jessi: So when can you use this doki-doki besides feeling nervous?
Naomi: うーん、恋をした時ですかね。
Jessi: Oh,when you fall in love! I see.
Naomi: 祐一さんはよくドキドキしますか?
Yuichi: いや、たまにしますね。
Naomi &Jessi: うーん…。
Yuichi: えっ、何ですか?この微妙な...
Naomi: いやいや。どっちかなあーて思って。緊張した時かなあ、それとも恋をした時かなあ。
Yuichi: うーん
Naomi: って思いました。
Jessi: The next word we look at is ….
Yuichi: 客室乗務員 (flight attendant)
Naomi: これ昔はよくスチュワーデスとも言いましたね。
Jessi: We used to call them stewardess.
Naomi: 英語でもスチュワーデスって言います?
Jessi: In the past I think. Probably this is the same as Japanese.
Naomi: なるほど。
Yuichi: これPC.ですよね。
Naomi: PC?パソコン?(笑)
Yuichi: パソコンじゃないです。Politically correctです。
Naomi: あっ、はいはいはい。
Yuichi: だから、フライトアテンダントとか、キャビンアテンダント、客室乗務員というのが正式と言うことですね。
Jessi: So these days, instead we call them flight attendant, cabin attendant or 客室乗務員. どれが一番使われますか。Which one is used most frequently?
Naomi: うーん、何だろうなあ…私の友達は、CAっていう風に言っています。
Jessi: CA?
Naomi: キャビンアテンダント
Jessi: Oh….but it’s just CA.
Naomi: うん、CA.
Yuichi: 日本人は省略するのが好きですからね。
Naomi: でもまあ、まだスチュワーデスって言うかもしれないですね。
Yuichi: 僕はスチュワーデスって今でも言いますね。
Naomi: I think we still use the word スチュワーデス in a conversation.
Jessi: Now onto the grammar.
Naomi: 次は文法です。

Lesson focus

Jessi: Today's grammar point is "o ~ kudasai." This phrase expresses a very polite request. In today's dialogue, the flight attendant makes several requests in the announcement.
Naomi: フライトをごゆっくりお楽しみください。(Please enjoy the flight.)
Jessi: Let's take a look at a formation. The formation is
Yuichi: お
Jessi: Plus the masu-stem of the verb
Yuichi: ください
Jessi: Let's practice o-kudasai in a situation. Suppose you are going to get on a bus. You hear...
Naomi: 後ろのドアからお乗りください。 Please get on the bus using the back door.
Jessi: Let’s take a verb to get on, board
Yuichi: 乗る
Jessi: masu-form
Yuichi: 乗ります
Jessi: Take away masu.
Yuichi: 乗り
Jessi: Make the phrase.
Yuichi: お乗りください 後ろのドアからお乗りください。
Jessi: Then you get on the bus. And you stop is coming closer and you were about to stand up and the announcement says,
Naomi: バスが止まってからお立ちください。(Please stand up after the bus stops.)
Jessi: Let's take a verb, to stand up.
Yuichi: 立つ
Jessi: And make the phrase.
Yuichi: お立ちください
Naomi: バスが止まってから、お立ちください。今のフレーズは日本でバスに乗るとよく聞くフレーズだと思うので、今度バスに乗る時は、是非、気をつけてお聞きください。
Jessi: So this is the phrase that you use really often on the bus. So the next time you get on the bus, try to listen for it.
Yuichi: じゃあ、最後にジェシーさんからリスナーの皆さんにrequestをお願いします。
Jessi: JapanesePod101.comに、ぜひ、お立ち寄りください。Please stop by JapanesePod 101.com.そして、コメントをお書きください。Please write comments.
Naomi: よろしくお願いします。
Yuichi: よろしくお願いします。
Jessi: よろしくお願いします。
