Yuichi: 祐一です。
Naomi: なおみです。
Jessi: Jessi here. Radio advice for the socially inept in Japan.
Naomi: ストーリーについて祐一さん教えてください。
Yuichi: 今回は、ラジオ番組を聴いてみましょう。
Jessi: We're going to listen to a Japanese radio program.面白そうですね
Yuichi: 2人のラジオ番組の司会、DJマキコとエイサクが話しています。DJマキコは丁寧な日本語を、そしてエイサクさんはカジュアルな日本語話しています。
Jessi: In this conversation, there are two hosts doing the radio program
Naomi: 今回の文法のポイントは何ですか?
Yuichi: 使役Part3です。
Jessi: Causative part 3, which expresses some kind of psychological change or emotional response. Can you give us an example?
Yuichi: 太郎は、友達を笑わせた。
Jessi: "Taro made his friend laugh."
Yuichi: それでは聞いてみましょう。
DIALOGUE
English: Good evening, everyone! DJ Makiko here.
: 今晩も、エイサクさんと一緒に、お送りします「ニッポン101」の時間です。
English: It's now time for Nippon 101, brought to you by Eisaku and me.
: では、早速ですが、今日の質問を紹介します。
English: Without further ado, I'd like to share today's question.
: 高校2年生、ペンネーム「おっちょこちょい」さんから来ています。
English: It's from a second year high school student who calls himself Scatterbrain.
エイサク:こんばんは、おっちょこちょいくん。
English: Good evening, Scatterbrain.
DJマキコ:実は、今クラスに好きな子がいます。
English: He writes, "You see, there's a girl I like in my class.
: どうしたら、彼女に僕の気持ちを気付かせることができるか、それから、どうしたら、彼女を笑わせることができるのか悩んでいます。アドバイスお願いします!
English: I want to know what I can do to make her laugh, and I'm also wondering about how to let her know how I feel. Please give me some advice."
エイサク:最初の答えは、簡単だ。「すきだ」って言えばいい。笑わせるのは難しい。。。
English: Well the first answer is easy. Just say you like her. Making her laugh might be tough…
: そうだ!駄洒落はどう?例えば「ニューヨークで入浴する」。
English: Oh, I know! How about saying some puns? Like, "Taking a bath, nyūyoku, in New York, Nyūyōku!"
DJマキコ:・・・きっと、彼女を苦笑いさせてしまいますね。
English: That'll only make her laugh in embarrassment.
エイサク:やっぱり、無理やり笑わせようとするのは、よくないか。
English: I guess it's not a good idea to try too hard to make her laugh.
DJマキコ:あまり意識しすぎないで、色々な機会に話しかけてみることはどうですか。
English: Don't think too hard about it. Why don't you just try to find lots of different opportunities to talk to her?
: 彼女のことを知らないと、喜ばせることはできませんからね。
English: If you don't know anything about her, you can't really make her happy.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuichi: ダイアログで質問したのは、高校2年生だったみたいなんですけれども、さいしょの質問「どうしたら彼女に僕の気持ちをに気づかせることができるか」ということについて、エイサクさんの答え「好きだ」って言えばいい、ちょとっ冷たいこたえだと思いませんか。
Jessi: そうですね。Eisaku's answer to the question "how do I let her know how I feel" was just to say "I like you". Or more like "I love you" in this case. Not quite the answer he was looking for.
Yuichi: それが難しいから、多分彼は聞いていたと思うんですけど。二人だったら、この高校生の質問、どう答えますか?
Naomi: 私は、正直、えいさくさんの答えは良いと思いますけどね。シンプルでいいですよね、好きって言えばいい。
Yuichi: なるほど。ジェシーは
Jessi: やっぱり、好きだって言えばいいんじゃないですか?勇気をもって。
Yuichi: 好きだって言って、嫌いだ!って言われたら、ちょっと悲しいですよね。
Jessi: ま、ショックですけどね。
Naomi: でも、早く答えがわかって、良くないですか。(笑)次の人を見つけられるじゃないですか。(笑)
Yuichi: という、なおみさんの考えですね。
Naomi: はい。(笑)
Yuichi: たいへん参考になりました。ところで、2人は、どんなタイプの人が好きですか?あの、例えば、駄洒落を言う人は好きですか?エイサクとか。
Jessi: でも、私は、面白い人が好きですよ。
Naomi: よく笑う人が好きかもしれないです。
Yuichi: なるほど。じゃあ、みな、二人は、ダジャレのことは答えませんでしたけれど(笑)ダジャレはどうですか?
Naomi: ま、面白いダジャレだったら、良いと思います。
Jessi: でも、言いすぎだと、ちょっとあれですね。
Naomi: うっとおしいねー。
Yuichi: よく、ダジャレ(pan),ダジャレと似ているものに、オヤジギャグってありますよね。
Jessi: Ah, right. Some listeners might not be familiar with オヤジギャグ, but ダジャレ are sometimes called that. オヤジ means old men or dad because there is image that ダジャレare usually told by old men.
Naomi: 例えば、どんなのがあるの?祐一さん。
Yuichi: うっ、えっ!? 「アルミ缶の上にあるみかん」とか、こういうダジャレを言う。
Naomi: あっのー、ボキャブラリーに行きましょうか。(笑)

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Jessi: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Yuichi: The first word is 無理矢理
Jessi: forcibly, against one's will
Yuichi: 何かをやりなさいといってさせることです。
Naomi: 無理はimpossibleですよね。で、「やり」というのは、「やる、する」という意味なんです。無理する、無理にやるということで、無理やりになったそうですね。
Jessi: Right, so even when you know that it's something near impossible, you make someone do it forcibly. That's 無理やり。 例文をお願いします。
Yuichi: お腹がいっぱいだったが、無理矢理全部料理を食べた。
Jessi: I was full, but I forced myself to eat up all of the food.
Naomi: 次の単語は、
Yuichi: 駄洒落.
Jessi: pun
Naomi: この単語を、分けて考えましょう。。だ、としゃれがくっついて、だじゃれという言葉になっています。
Jessi: This word consists of two parts; da + jare.
Naomi: 「だ」は、駄目な(jessi - bad)という意味です。しゃれは、witty remark(joke)。そうですね。
なので、よくない冗談、下手な冗談という意味になります。
Yuichi: でも、この「ダジャレ」じゃなくって、この「だ」の代わりに、「お」をつけると、いい意味になりますよ!
Naomi: あー、「おしゃれ」。
Jessi: fashionable, right? Like おしゃれな駄洒落? Is that such a thing?
Naomi: というか、そのへんがちょっとダジャレっぽいよね。
Yuichi: 「おしゃれなダジャレ」って覚えてください。
Naomi: 次の単語は、
Yuichi: 入浴する
Jessi: to take a bath
Yuichi: この単語は、ダイアローグの中で、駄洒落として使われていましたね。
Naomi: 使われてましたね。どんな、ダジャレでした?
Yuichi: ニューヨークで、入浴する。
Jessi: Which I guess translates to take a bath in New York.
Naomi: そう、訳すと面白くもなんともないよね。
Jessi: そうですよね。確かに。
Yuichi: いつ苦笑いしますか?
Naomi: 入浴というのは、お風呂に入るという意味です。あの、bathtub入らないです。湯船に入らないと、入浴するというのは、あまり言わないかもしれないですね。シャワーを浴びる事には、入浴には
入らないです。では、最後の単語をお願いします。
Yuichi: 苦笑い。
Jessi: to force to smile to give an embarrassed smile to laugh nervously
Naomi: いっぱい訳があるんですね。
Jessi: そうですね。
Yuichi: いつ、苦笑いしますか?
Naomi: ま、あの、祐一さんの冗談を聞いた時とか。
Yuichi: ま、今の説明しますと、面白くない時に、あのー、苦笑いをするってことですよね。
Naomi: 顔だけ笑ってる感じですね。
Yuichi: そうそうそう。それ、悲しいですね。他にも日本人が苦笑いするときがあると思うんですけれども、どんな時ですかね?
Naomi: 失敗したときとか?気まずいときとかに、苦笑いしたりしますね。
Jessi: なるほど。When they make a mistake or when they feel awkward, Japanese people might force a smile.
Naomi: これはアメリカ人は、あまり苦笑いは、こういう時は、しないですか、ジェシーさん。
Jessi: 多分、人によると思いますね。Some people might laugh nervously, awkward situation but not everyone.
Naomi: でも、ま、苦笑いをする人が、日本人はアメリカ人に比べて多いような気はします。
Yuichi: なので、アメリカ人がですね、誰か日本人が失敗して、なんか、笑っていると、苦笑いしてるんですけれども、何であの人は笑っているんだ、みたいな感じで、ちょっと変に見えるみたいですね。
Jessi: あー、そうですね。So for example when American people see Japanese who have made a mistake laugh nervously, they might wonder why they are laughing. But, it's not unnatural for Japanese to laugh in that case.
Yuichi: なので、見たときに驚かないようにしてください。

Lesson focus

Jessi: In this lesson, we are going to look into the usage of the "emotional responsive causative." This means that one person makes another feel a certain emotion or emotionally react in a certain way. Can we hear an example sentence for the last lesson?
Yuichi: 「なおみさんとジェシーさんを怒らせました」
Jessi: I made Jessi and Naomi angry. Let's break down the sentence.
Yuichi: なおみさんとジェシーさん
Jessi: Jessi and Naomi
Yuichi: を
Jessi: object marking particle, here works as the particle to mark the one performing action which in this case is getting angry.
Yuichi: 怒らせました
Jessi: making someone angry
Jessi: Now, take a closer look at the particle used in the sentence again. The particle o is used to mark the one performing action. If you remember the last two usages of the causative, the particle ni was always used to mark the one performing action, but in this emotional responsive causative, you always use the particle o to mark it.
Yuichi: 2人は、最近誰かを怒らせたことありますか。
Naomi: 私、自分では、気づいてないですね。(笑)
もしかしたら、怒らせてるかもしれないですけど、怒らせてない…と思います。
Yuichi: なおみさんの隣に座っている人が怒っていたかもしれないですね。
Naomi: 適当な事を。
Jessi: Let's take a look at another example.
Yuichi: 直美さんを泣かせたい。
Jessi: I want to make Naomi cry.
Naomi: どういうサンプルセンテンスなんですか!なんか、人を怒らせたり、泣かせたり。
Yuichi: 直美さんは、泣き虫ですか? Do you cry often?
Naomi: 泣き虫です。よく泣きます。怒ってもなくし、悲しくても泣くし、嬉しくても泣きます(笑)
Yuichi: じゃあ、直美さんを泣かせるのは簡単ですね。
Naomi: あー、簡単ですね。
Yuichi: じゃあ、あのーなおみさんを笑わせましょう。
Naomi: でも、私、すぐ笑っちゃうから、ダメですね。
Yuichi: 簡単ですかこのゲーム
Naomi: すごい簡単。
Yuichi: ま、こういう時は、ジェシーさんの得意なダジャレでやりましょうか。
Jessi: えっ、私得意ですか?
Yuichi: はい。
Jessi: えー、嫌ですよ
Yuichi: じゃあ、しょうがない。僕がいきます
Naomi: はい、お願いします。はい、祐一さんのダジャレ、じゃじゃーん。
Yuichi: すいかは安いか?
Naomi: (苦笑)
Jessi: So did you get the pun? スイカは安いか?A watermelon is cheap.
Yuichi: なおみさんを苦笑いさせてしまいましたね。
Naomi: でも、ちょっと笑っちゃいました。
Yuichi: ちょっと、笑いました。やった!なおみさんを笑わせました。はい。ダジャレ、面白いですよね。
Naomi: スイカはやすいか(笑)ちょっと可笑しい。
Yuichi: リスナーのみなさんは、ダジャレ好きですか?やっぱりリスナーのみなさんを、楽しませたいですからね。
Jessi: そうですよね。We want to keep listeners entertained.
Yuichi: じゃ、次回のレッスンでは、causativeの復習をします。しっかり理解させます。では、また。
Naomi: じゃ、また。
Jessi: See you next time.
