Yuichi: 祐一です。
Naomi: なおみです。
Jessi: Jessi here. Japanese Embedded Questions. I don’t know who will come.
Naomi: では、今回のダイアログのストーリーについて教えてください。
Yuichi: 今回も、ある会社での話です。
Naomi: ある会社・・・。この間と同じ会社ですか？
Yuichi: いいえ、違う会社です。ある違う会社です。
Jessi: So this conversation takes place at a different company from last time.
Naomi: 会話には、誰が出てきていますか。
Yuichi: 直子、祐二、ジェニー、そしてペーターです。
Naomi: あれっ？ちょっと、どっかで聞いたことあるような名前ですね(笑）
Jessi: そうですね。In the conversation, we have Naoko, Yuji, Jenny and Peter. They are co workers, so they will be speaking formally.
Naomi: 今回の文法のポイントは何でしょう？
Yuichi: A question followed by ～か。 as in　どこに行くか知らない。
Jessi: In this lesson, you will learn about Embedded Questions. Sentences like "I don't know where we're going". There's a question word in there, so we call it an embedded question.
Naomi: なるほどね。I see.
Yuichi: それでは聞いてみましょう。
DIALOGUE
直子:誰が来るか分からないんだよね。
直子:ペーターさんの引越しパーティー行く？
祐二:はい。ペーターさんの新しい新居見てみたいですね。
ジェニー:私も参加します。誰が来るんですか。
直子:誰が来るか分からないんだよね。
: いつ開くかもまだ決めてないみたい。
祐二:じゃ、僕、ペーターさんにちょっと聞いてみます。
祐二:ペーターさん、いつ引越しパーティーをするか決めましたか。
ペーター:来週の金曜の夕方にするつもり。みんな、来れる？
祐二:行けますよ。
ジェニー:私は、仕事を片付けてから、行きます。
直子:私も仕事が何時に終わるかわからないけど、たぶん行きます。
（パーティーの前の日）
祐二:直子さん、明日のパーティーに何を持っていくか決めました？
直子:あ・・・まだ。そうだ、みんなで引越しのプレゼント一緒に買わない？
ジェニー:いいですね。プレゼント何にするか考えましょう。
次は英語が入ります。
直子:ペーターさんの引越しパーティー行く？
English: Are you going to Payter’s moving party?
祐二:はい。ペーターさんの新しい新居見てみたいですね。
English: Yes, I want to get a look at Payter’s new place.
ジェニー:私も参加します。誰が来るんですか。
English: I’m going too. Who else is coming?
直子:誰が来るか分からないんだよね。
English: You know, I’m not sure.
: いつ開くかもまだ決めてないみたい。
It sounds like the start time isn’t even decided yet.
祐二:じゃ、僕、ペーターさんにちょっと聞いてみます。
English: Well, okay, I’ll ask Payter.
祐二:ペーターさん、いつ引越しパーティーをするか決めましたか。
English: Payter, have you decided when you’re going to have your moving party?
ペーター:来週の金曜の夕方にするつもり。みんな、来れる？
English: I’m planning to have it in the evening next Friday. Can everyone come?
祐二:行けますよ。
English: Yeah, we can come.
ジェニー:私は、仕事を片付けてから、行きます。
English: I’ll be there after I take care of things at work.
直子:私も仕事が何時に終わるかわからないけど、たぶん行きます。
English: I’m also not sure what time I can get off work that day, but I should be going too.

祐二:直子さん、明日のパーティーに何を持っていくか決めました？
English: Naoko, did you decide what you’re taking to the party?
直子:あ・・・まだ。そうだ、みんなで引越しのプレゼント一緒に買わない？
English: Oh, not yet. Oh yeah, why don’t we all chip in for a moving present?
ジェニー:いいですね。プレゼント何にするか考えましょう。
English: Great. Let’s think about what kind of present to get.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuichi: 今日のストーリーはどうでしたか。
Naomi: これ４人出てきていますよね。
Yuichi: そうですね。
Naomi: こういう何人も、出てくる会話って言うのは、誰が誰にformalを使っていて、誰が誰にinformalを使っているのかで、人間関係がわかって、面白いですよね。
Jessi: そうですね。 So interesting. Because you can tell what kind of relationship that speakers have depending on who uses informal language and who uses formal language.Really interesting.
Yuichi: そうですね。そういう人間関係がわかって、面白いというのもあります。後、今回の会話では、新しい家に、引っ越すと言う事だったので、アメリカの引っ越しについて、ジェシーさんに聞いてみたいと思います。
Jessi: あ、はい。
Yuichi: アメリカでは、新しい家に引っ越すと、パーティーをしますよね。
Jessi: そうですね。Housewarming partyをしますね。日本では、あまりhousewarming partyみたいなものはしませんよね。Are housewarming parties not that common in Japan?
Naomi: そうですね。パーティーをする人は、あまりいないかもしれないですね。あ、でも、引っ越しをしたら、近所に挨拶をしに行く人は多いみたいですね。But it really depends on the person and the area.
Jessi: So instead, some people who move to a new house or apartment will go say hello to the neighbors.
Naomi: あのー、アパートはわかりませんけど、新しい家に引っ越したときには、挨拶をする人は多いでしょうね。
Yuichi: で、その時に、何かプレゼントを渡しますね。
Jessi: 例えば、何を渡しますか。
Yuichi: お菓子とか、洗剤とかですかね。残らないものを渡すそうです。
Jessi: So something like sweets or detergent. Something that doesn't last very long.
Naomi: 祐一さんは、引っ越しはしたことあります？
Yuichi: はい、したことありますね。マンションなんですけれども、近所に何か渡していたと思います。
Naomi: 何を渡しました？
Yuichi: タオルですかね。後、蕎麦（ソバ）を渡すことも、よくあるみたいです。
Jessi: Soba as in noodles?
Yuichi: はい、そうです。
Naomi: ああ、Playing on words って言うんですか？言葉遊びですね。「そば」という単語には、他にも意味がありますからね、わかります？
Jessi: Ah, like nearby?
Naomi: そうそうそう。
Yuichi: そうです。そばに引っ越してきました。I moved to the house near you.という意味ですね。
Jessi: あー、なるほど。面白いですね。実は、アメリカでは、逆ですね。引っ越した人が近所の人にプレゼントをもらいます。
Yuichi: もらえるんですね。
Jessi: そうですね。
Naomi: 新しい人が、古い人からプレゼントをもらう。
Jessi: はい、そうです。
Naomi: なるほど。
Yuichi: じゃあ、たくさん引っ越ししたほうが、いいですね。（一同笑）
Naomi: でも、パーティーしなくちゃいけないんですもんね。アメリカはねー。皆さんの国では、引越しをしたときには、何をしますか。

Jessi: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Jessi: The first word is?
Naomi: 片付ける
Jessi: to tidy up, to finish up
Yuichi: 「片付ける」には、ふたつ意味があります。ひとつは、ものをしまうことです。
Jessi: 片付ける has two meanings. One is "to tidy up"
Yuichi: 例えば、机の上に、漫画、ＤＶＤ、お皿、紙、鉛筆、お菓子、そしてカバンがあります。
Naomi: 汚いですよね。
Yuichi: で、ノートが置けないので、勉強できません。
Jessi: Let's say you have a bunch of stuff on your desk and you have
no place to put your notebook. What do you do?
Naomi: そしたら、机の上を片付けます。（I'll tidy up the desk.）
Yuichi: で、あと、もうひとつの意味は、終わらせる(to finish)という意味です。
Jessi: The other meaning of 片付ける is "to finish"
Yuichi: 実は、今回のダイアローグの「片付ける」は「終わらせる」という意味でした。直美さん、例文をお願いします。
Naomi: 今日中に、仕事を片付けたい。
Jessi: I want to finish up my work by the end of today.「今日中に仕事を終わらせたい」も同じ意味ですね。
Naomi: そうですね。仕事を片付けたい。仕事を終わらせたい。want to finish up my work.同じ意味です。
Yuichi: じゃあ、次の単語をお願いします。
Naomi: 参加する
Jessi: to join, to participate in
Naomi: 「パーティーに行く」とか、「ミーティングに出る」とかを「パーティーに参加する」「ミーティングに参加する」と言ってもオッケーです。でも、参加するの方が、formalな感じがしますよね。
Yuichi: そうですね。漢字も使っていますからね。
Naomi: そうですね。じゃあ、祐一さん、例文をお願いします。
Yuichi: 東京マラソンに参加したい。
Jessi: I want to participate in the Tokyo Marathon.
Naomi: え？ホント？祐一さん。
Jessi: Really? じゃ、直美さん、一緒に、応援行きましょう。
Naomi: いいですねー。
Yuichi: じゃあ、
Naomi: ほんと走るの？
Yuichi: 二人とも応援しないで、みんなで三人で、東京マラソンに参加しましょう！
Jessi: ちょっと無理ですね。（笑）
Yuichi: 参加しましょうよ。参加しましょう。
Naomi: 私ちょっと仕事が…（一同笑）ジェシー、私たち忙しいもんね。

Yuichi: じゃ、次の単語は、開く
Jessi: to open, to throw, as in to throw a party
Naomi: Lower Intermediateのリスナーの皆さんは「開く」がto open という意味なのは、多分知っていると思うんですね。
Jessi: So if you've been listening to these lower Intermediate lessons, you're probably already familiar with the word 開く meaning "to open"
Naomi: 例えば、歯医者さんdentistなんかで、
Yuichi: 口を開いてください
Jessi: Please open your mouth
Naomi: これよく言われますね。
Jessi: You often hear this at the dentist's office.
Naomi: でも、今回のダイアログでは「開く」は、パーティーをする、イベントを行う　という意味でしたね。
Yuichi: ドアをopenするので、みなさんパーティーに来て下さいという意味ですね。
Naomi: おー、賢い！そういうことか。
Jessi: So when you throw a party or 'パーティーを開く', you open the door and welcome the guests. That's why this verb,　開く or to open is used. 例文をお願いします。
Yuichi: ミーティングを開く
Jessi: We hold a meeting.
Naomi: さっきの「参加する to join」を使ってもいいですね。例えば、
３時からミーディングを開くので、参加してください。
Jessi: We're going to have a meeting at 3, so please attend.
Jessi: In this lesson and the next lesson, we will learn about embedded questions. So first, let me explain what embedded questions are. Embedded questions are questions within another statement or question. In English, sentences like.."I don't know who's coming" or "Can you tell me what time it is?" are embedded questions. Let's look at the first one. "I don't know who's coming" - we saw this in the dialogue. We have a full question; "who's coming?" embedded inside the statement.
Now, how do you say "I don't know who's coming?" in Japanese? That's what we're going to learn. In this lesson we'll focus on embedded WH-questions, and in lesson 15, we'll focus on embedded yes-no questions.
Naomi: じゃ、"I don't know who's coming" を最初に見てみましょう。
Jessi: First, let's think of the WH-question. It is...
Yuichi: 誰が来る? (Who's coming?)
Jessi: And then you add　-かto it. 誰が来るか。And then you put it inside the phrase "I don't know".
Yuichi: 私は分からない。
Jessi: So how do you insert 誰が来るか in that phrase?
Yuichi: 私は誰が来るか分からない。
Jessi: "I don't know who's coming" Note that the verb that comes before か has to be in the informal form.　来る. Okay, let's look at another example.
How do you say "I don't know which is cheap" in Japanese?
Yuichi: 私はどれが安いか分からない。
Naomi: So the WH-question is どれが安い? And then we add か.
Jessi: And we put that question inside the sentence; 私は分からない。
Naomi: That becomes 私は、どれが安いか分からない。
Jessi: So did you notice where we put the question? Right in between 私は"I" and わからない "don't know". And remember - you don't always need to say 私は - it can sound unnatural if you use it too much. So let's practice some sentences without it. How do you say, "I don't know what time it is."
Yuichi: 何時かわからない。
Jessi: Let's use a different verb instead of the verb "わからない" How about "I'll ask who's coming."
Naomi: 誰が来るかきく
Yuichi: or 誰が来るかたずねる
Jessi: How about "I'll check which is cheap"
Yuichi: どれが安いか調べる。
Naomi: どうでしょうか。今回のお話はパーティーについてでしたが、もし、パーティーをするなら、どこでパーティーがしたいですか。
Jessi: スペイン料理が好きなので、スペイン料理がある店がいいです。
Naomi: いいですね。
Yuichi: いいですね。じゃあ、僕が、どこでスペイン料理が食べられるか調べますね！
Jessi: Yay, Yuichi says he'll look up a restaurant where we can have Spanish food.
Naomi: お願いしマース。
Jessi: 楽しみです。
Naomi: じゃ、このレッスンはこの辺で。
