INTRODUCTION
Yuichi: 祐一です。
Naomi: なおみです。
Jessi: Jessi here. What did you expect?
Naomi: 今日は、探偵の話のシリーズの最後ですね。
Yuichi: 今日は、キミさんと探偵は出てきません。キミさんと探偵のドラマを見た二人が話しています。
Jessi: So this time Kimi-san and the detective are not in today's dialog. Instead two people who watched the drama will be talking about what they saw.
Yuichi: この二人はカップルでリビングで話をしているようです。カップル同士なので、カジュアルな会話です。
Jessi: The conversation takes place in a living room between a couple, Mari and Hiroki. Because they are a couple, they will be speaking informally.
Naomi: 今日のの文法のポイントは何でしょう？
Yuichi: はずだ。 as in　君が犯人のはずだ。
Jessi: You must be the culprit. In this lesson, you will learn how to express your expectations.
Yuichi: それでは聞いてみましょう。
DIALOGUE
プツーン（テレビの電源が切れる音）
佐藤真理:この推理ドラマ微妙な話だなぁ。
: しかも、結末は来週？
: 私は、鳥が犯人だと思うな。
山田広樹:そうかな。鳥が錦鯉をくわえられるはずがないよ。
: やっぱり、人間が犯人のはずだよ。
佐藤真理:確かに、錦鯉って本当に高いし、犯人は、盗んだ錦鯉をネットオークションで売るかもしれないよね。
山田広樹:そうそう。犯人は、錦鯉をどこかで売るはずだよ。
: だから、犯人がどこで売るかを探して、逮捕すればいいと思う。
佐藤真理:でも、犯人は、そんな簡単に売らないはずよね。
: すぐ売ると、ばれちゃうだろうし。
山田広樹:ははっ、そうだな。そんな間抜けな犯人いないよな。
: あと、徳川キミっておばさん、わざわざ探偵に頼む必要なかったね。
佐藤真理:あのおばさんは、一人でもこの事件を解決できたはずだよね。
今度は英語が入ります。
プツーン（テレビの電源が切れる音）

佐藤真理:この推理ドラマ微妙な話だなぁ。
English: The story on this detective drama is kind of lame.
: しかも、結末は来週？
And they’re putting off the ending until next week?
: 私は、鳥が犯人だと思うな。
I think a bird did it.
山田広樹:そうかな。鳥が錦鯉をくわえられるはずがないよ。
English: Really? But a bird couldn’t hold a whole colored carp.
: やっぱり、人間が犯人のはずだよ。
I think a human must have done it after all.
佐藤真理:確かに、錦鯉って本当に高いし、犯人は、盗んだ錦鯉をネットオークションで売るかもしれないよね。
English: Well, it is true that colored carp are really expensive. The culprit might want to sell the stolen carp on an Internet auction.
山田広樹:そうそう。犯人は、錦鯉をどこかで売るはずだよ。
English: Yeah, they probably just want to sell the carp somewhere.
: だから、犯人がどこで売るかを探して、逮捕すればいいと思う。
I think they just need to find out where this criminal is planning to sell them and arrest him.
佐藤真理:でも、犯人は、そんな簡単に売らないはずよね。
English: But the culprit couldn’t sell them that easily.
: すぐ売ると、ばれちゃうだろうし。
If he tries to do it too soon, he might get caught.
山田広樹:ははっ、そうだな。そんな間抜けな犯人いないよな。
English: Haha, you’re right. No criminal is that stupid.
: あと、徳川キミっておばさん、わざわざ探偵に頼む必要なかったね。
But it does seem like Kimi Tokugawa didn’t really need to go out of her way to hire a detective.
佐藤真理:あのおばさんは、一人でもこの事件を解決できたはずだよね。
English: Looks like the old lady could have solved the case all by herself.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuichi: 今回が、「探偵の話」の最後でした。みなさんも推理してみてください。
Jessi: This is the final episode of the detective story. Everyone please try and guess who the culprit is.
Yuichi: 真理と広樹が犯人を推理していましたよね。
Jessi: Yeah, that’s right. So Mari and Hiroki were trying to guess the culprit.
Naomi: いろんなこと言っていましたよね。犯人は鳥だ。。。とか人間だ。。。とかですね。
Yuichi: そうですね。「錦鯉をネットオークションで売るかもしれないよね。」と真理は言っていました。ちなみに、ネットオークションは、インターネットオークションの略です。よくインターネットをネットって言いますよね。これは、英語でも一緒ですよね。
Jessi: That’s right. We use 'net' all the time, as in 'surf the net'.
Naomi: 日本語でも「ネットサーフィンする」っていいますもんね。
Yuichi: 僕調べたんですけど、実際に、錦鯉はネットで買えるみたいですよ。
Jessi: へー。 So, they actually sell colored carp through internet auctions.
Yuichi: はい。
Jessi: すごいですね。
Naomi: ねー、不思議。
Jessi: そうですね。不思議な感じがしますね。
Naomi: 生きてるんでしょ？
Yuichi: あっ、もちろん（笑）もちろん、そうですよ。はい。配達で届くんですよね。
Jessi &Naomi: へー。
Yuichi: 何でも買える時代ですね。
Jessi: そうですね。
Naomi: 不思議。
Jessi: お二人に聞きますけど、ネットオークションってしますか。Do you ever use internet auctions?
Naomi: 私はしないですね。ちょっと怖いので。
Jessi: なるほど。じゃ、祐一さん。
Yuichi: 僕もしないですね、オークションは。でも、インターネットで本とかを注文します。
Naomi: あっ、Amazonね。
Jessi: いいですね。便利ですね。
Yuichi: はい。

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Jessi: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Yuichi: The first word is 微妙
Jessi: subtle, difficult, questionable
Yuichi: ダイアログでは、「この推理ドラマ微妙な話しだなぁ。」と、使われていました。（The story on this detective drama is kind of lame.）このように「よくない」という意味で使われることが多いです。もともと微妙は、subtleの意味だったんですけどね。
Jessi: 微妙 literally means subtle, or delicate, but it also is used when you want to express the idea that while something isn't bad, it isn't good either. Kind of like "questionable" or "iffy".
Naomi: When you don't want to be so direct, but still want to express that you are not quite satisfied, 微妙is a good word to use, I think. たとえば、皆さんは、最近微妙なもの、微妙なこと、ありましたか？例えばね、私は駅を見に行ったんですが、ま、微妙でした。ま、面白くなくはないけど、すごく面白かったということではない。
Yuichi: 僕も、あのー、この前、映画のDVDを見たんですけど、ちょっと微妙だったかな。
Naomi: 何が微妙？
Yuichi: ストーリーが。
Naomi: ストーリーが微妙。
Yuichi: はい。微妙でしたね。
Naomi: じゃあ、ストーリーが好きじゃなかったっていう意味ですよね。
Jessi: そうですね。あー、なるほど。私は、コンビニで、新発売のチップスを買ってみたんですね。
Naomi: あるあるある。
Jessi: で、すごくおいしそうだったのに、微妙でした。（笑）
Yuichi: なるほど。
Jessi: よくありますよね。
Naomi: よくありますね。
Yuichi: あんまり美味しくなかったってことですね。
Jessi: はい。
Naomi: こんな風に、微妙っていうのは、毎日使う言葉だと思いますね。
Yuichi: すごい便利な言葉なので。
Jessi: そうですね。
Yuichi: はい。みなさんも使ってみてください。
Naomi: 次の単語は、ばれる。（to leak out (a secret), to be exposed）
これずいぶんくだけた表現ですね。This is a casual expression.formalな場面では使わないでください。
Jessi: 例文をお願いします。Can we have sample sentences?
Yuichi: うそがばれる。（The lie was exposed.）秘密がばれる。（The secret is out.）
年齢がばれる。（My age was revealed.）
Naomi: なんでね、最後の時だけ私の顔見るのかわからないですけど。（笑）
Yuichi: ちょっと微妙でしたね、いまね。（笑）はい、次の単語お願いします。
Naomi: 間抜け
Jessi: Idiot, dunce
Naomi: 間 means timing or rhythm で、抜けはto fall out とか missingと言う意味ですね。リズムやタイミングが悪い人のことをもともとさしたそうです。
Jessi: So manuke originally describes a person who can't really keep up very well.
Naomi: たとえば、みんなで、太鼓を演奏していて、一人だけ、変なところで、太鼓をトンとたたいちゃうような人です。Not right for the occasionって言う意味もあるかもしれないですね。
Jessi: For example, at a taiko drum performance, everyone's in sync except for one person who is hitting the taiko at the wrong time.
Yuichi: でも今は、そういう意味はないですね。idiotとかstupidの意味だけです。Jessi: A stupid comment
Naomi: ま、バカとか、アホよりは、ちょっとソフトな感じですかね。
Jessi: あー、そうなんだ。
Yuichi: そうですね。例えば、間抜けなコメント(A stupid comment)
Naomi: 間抜けな人
Jessi: an idiot
Naomi: 間抜けな行動
Jessi: stupid behavior
Naomi: という風に使いますが、バカとかアホよりは、やっぱりね、少しは弱い。可愛い感じがします。では、例文お願いします。
Yuichi: 彼の間抜けなコメントに笑ってしまった。
Jessi: I laughed at the stupid comment he made.
Naomi: 間抜けというのは名詞nounですけど、na-adjectiveにもなります。
Jessi: Let’s move on to the grammar.
Naomi: 次は文法です。
Jessi: The focus of this lesson is the word hazu, which is a noun used to indicate one's assumptions or expectations. It corresponds to "should be" or "ought to be" in English.
Hazu directly follows verbs and -i adjectives in informal form.
Yuichi: 犯人は、錦鯉をどこかで売るはずだよ。.（"The culprit's probably going to sell the carp somewhere."）じゃ、細かく見ていきましょう。
Jessi: 「うる」 "informal non past to sell " plus 「はず」"should be" 「売るはずだ。」They should be selling it or They'll probably sell it. Next, can we have "i-adjective plus はず " sentence?
Yuichi: 犯人はお金が欲しいはずだ。（"The culprit wants money."）
Jessi: 「欲しい」 "want" it's an i adjective　plus 「はず」　"should be" 「欲しいはずだ」so meaning ‘They should be wanting. or They probably want.’
Jessi: As for na adjectives and nouns, -na adjectives are followed by "na", and nouns followed by the particle "no.", because hazu functions as a noun. Any examples from the dialog that use a noun?
Yuichi: 人間が犯人「の」はずだよ。.("I think a human must have done it after all. ")
Jessi: 犯人 is a noun, so it's followed by の. How about na-adjective plus はず?
Yuichi: 夜、この辺は静かなはずだよ。(This place should be quiet at night.)
Jessi: 「しずかな」　pre-nominal form of na adjective しずか meaning quiet plus 「はず」 should be 「静かなはず」It should be quiet.
Yuichi: 夜この辺は静かなはずだよ。
Naomi: レッスン９から１２はずっと錦鯉の話でしたね。そして、文法は可能性 probability possibility でしたね。９から１２で勉強したことを復習しましょう。まず、レッスン９では ---かもしれない
Yuichi: 明日雨が降るかもしれない
Jessi: It might rain tomorrow.
Naomi: 40-60%ぐらいですかね。。
Jessi: I think かもしれない is a pretty low possibility.
Naomi: レッスン１０では---と思う
Yuichi: 明日、雨が降ると思う。
Jessi: I think it will rain tomorrow. You can express your opinion with "と思う。"
Naomi: レッスン１１では　---だろう
Yuichi: 明日雨が降るだろう。
Jessi: It will probably rain tomorrow.
Naomi: これは、多分、スピーカーは、ちょっとリサーチをしていますね。で、その結果、雨が降ると考えている。多分、70%から90%くらいですかね。
Jessi: だろう can indicate relatively higher probability
Naomi: 結構、高いですよねー。
Yuichi: そうですね。
Naomi: そしてこのレッスン１２では--のはずだ
Yuichi: 明日雨が降るはずだ。
Jessi: It should rain tomorrow.
Naomi: ほとんど間違いないと思っている感じですかね。
Jessi: So はず indicates what you are assuming your assumptions.
Naomi: 例えば、次のサッカーのワールドカップは「イギリスが優勝するだろう」。
Jessi: England will probably win the World Cup.
Yuichi: いや、ブラジルが優勝するはずです。
Jessi: No, Brazil's gotta win.
Naomi: いやあ、でも、フランスが優勝するかもしれない。
Jessi: Or maybe France will win.
Jessi: 私は、イタリアが優勝すると思います。I think Italy will win.
Yuichi: ま、こういう風に皆さんも、自分の意見を言うときに使ってください。それではまた。
Naomi: じゃ、また。
Jessi: See you next time.
