INTRODUCTION
Natsuko: こんにちは。夏子です。
Naomi: 直美です。
Peter: Peter here. Supermarket Superman.
Naomi: スーパーマーケットのスーパーマン?
Peter: そうですよ。
Natsuko: え、それは誰と誰が出てくるんでしょう。
Naomi: 山中さんとうーん、スーパーマンが誰なのかちょっとわからないですけど、山中さんと竜さんの会話のようです。
Peter: So this is a conversation between Mr. Yamanaka and Ryu.
Natsuko: 多分山中さんはテレビのリポーターですね。
Peter: And Mr. Yamanaka is probably a TV reporter.
Naomi: ということは、何か事件でも起きたんでしょうかね。
Peter: So something must have happened.
Natsuko: いつ、どこで、何が起きたんでしょうか。
Peter: So that’s what we are going to find out. Now as the conversation involves a television reporter, we are going to be using polite Japanese here. Television reporters on TV of course use polite Japanese. Here we go.
DIALOGUE

YAMANAKA: This is Yamanaka, reporting on site. Yesterday, this convenience store was robbed. But one of the robbers was caught by a young man. Oh, maybe that's the young man himself...Let's go talk to him!
山中: すいません、ちょっとよろしいですか?
YAMANAKA: Excuse me. May I ask you some questions?
竜: あ、はい。
RYU: Ah, sure.
山中: アナタが、昨日ここで強盗を捕まえたという方ですか?!昨日の事を詳しく教えてください!
YAMANAKA: Are you the one that caught the robber here yesterday? Please tell us about it in detail.
竜: いやー、あれは学校から帰っているところでした。このコンビニでお菓子を買って、出るところに強盗が入ってきて。それで、強盗がお金を持って逃げようとしたんですけど、転んだんですよ。で、転んだところを押さえつけました。
RYU: Well, I was on my way home from school. I bought a snack at the convenience store, and was about to leave when the robber came in. The robber tried to run away with the money, but he tripped. That's when I pinned him down.
山中: なるほど!素晴らしいですねぇ!かっこいいですねぇ!!!で、強盗は逃げようとしたんですか?
YAMANAKA: I see. That's brilliant! That's so cool! And the robber tried to get away?
竜: いえ、全然。転んで気を失っていましたからね。
RYU: Uh, not at all. He lost consciousness when he tripped.
山中: あ、、、えっ、、それだけ?そうなんですか。あんまりかっこよくない。。。いえ、失礼しました。ドジな強盗だったんですねぇ。以上、現場よりお伝えしました!
YAMANAKA: Oh, ah, I see. That's it? I see. That's not so cool... Uh, sorry to take up your time (I didn't mean to be rude). So it was a clumsy robber. That's it from the crime scene!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Peter: 夏子さん、直美先生のご意見を聞きましょう。
Natsuko: 直美さん。今日の話、どう思いましたか?
Naomi: スーパーマンは竜さんなんですかね。
Natsuko: うーん。でも、彼が捕まえたというよりも強盗が勝手に転んだみたいですね。
Naomi: そうですね。強盗が逃げようとしたけど、転んだっていう風に書いてありますよね。
Natsuko: しかも気を失った。
Naomi: じゃ、何もしてないんですね。
Peter: So a burglar tried to escape and he fell down and he knocked himself out.
Natsuko: スーパーマンはじゃあ、結局誰なんでしょうね。
Peter: So who is superman here?
Natsuko: もしかしたら強盗かも。
Peter: Credit for himself.
VOCAB LIST
Peter: Okay, let’s take a look at the vocab words in today’s lesson because there are lot of good ones. Here we go.
Natsuko: 現場
Peter: Actual spot, scene.
Natsuko: 何か事件とか事故が起きた、その場所、そのspotというような意味ですよね。
Peter: So the place where an accident or an incident takes place.
Naomi: 後は Workplace という意味でも使われますね。
Natsuko: あ、そうですね。
Peter: Now also you use it at the workplace.
Natsuko: Working levelというニュアンスですね。現場からの声 Opinions from the working level.
Peter: Interesting, I didn’t even know that 現場。
Naomi: 交通事故の現場だと
Peter: The place, the site or scene an accident occurred.
Natsuko: だからニュースなんかではよく出てくる言葉ですね。
Naomi: 交通事故の現場を見たことがありますか?
Peter: So have you seen an actual spot of an accident.
Natsuko: うちの会社の入り口に車が突っ込んだことあるんですよ。
Naomi: え、本当に?あそこに突っ込んだんですか?
Natsuko: そう。
Peter: So a car hit the entrance to the building where we worked.
Natsuko: すごかったみたいです。私はそれを実際に見たんじゃないんですけど。
Naomi: はい。
Natsuko: 社長が写真撮ってました。
Naomi: 社長が写真を撮ってたんですか。
Natsuko: そう。貼ってあります。うちの会社にその写真、貼ってあります。
Naomi: 後で見せてもらいます。
Natsuko: 皆さん、事故には気をつけてください。
Peter: はい。次行きましょう。
Naomi: 強盗
Peter: Robbery, burglary.
Naomi: 例えば、銀行に強盗が入り、お金が盗まれた。
Peter: The robber broke into the bank and snatched the money.
Natsuko: 次は見事。
Peter: Honorable, beautifully.
Natsuko: In today’s dialogue, 見事 is used as an adverb. 強盗は青年によって見事取り押さえられました。
Peter: The young man caught the robber honorably.
Naomi: これ、本当は見事に押さえられましたのはずですよね。
Natsuko: そうですね。に、が省略されてます。
Peter: So the に is missing here but again there would be a に in between the adjective and the verb.
Naomi: 見事なだったらば、な ending adjective です。
Peter: Next.
Naomi: 取り押さえる
Peter: To seize, to capture, to arrest.
Naomi: 取るというのは To take です。押さえるが to seize.
Peter: So here we have a compound verb. We take the masu stem of the first verb 取り and combine it with 押さえる。取り押さえる. To seize, to capture, to arrest.
Naomi: 警察が犯人を取り押さえた。
Peter: The police captured the criminal.
Natsuko: 次は捕まえる。
Peter: To catch, to arrest.
Naomi: 次は押さえつける。
Peter: To press down, to hold down. Now this word isn’t just for capturing someone but it can be used in many other instances.
Natsuko: You can use this not only for physical actual action but also the state or condition.
Peter: 例えば?
Natsuko: 部下の意見を押さえつける。
Peter: To hold down the subordinate’s opinion and we also have opposed to, in the conversation. We had to hold down physically はい、次行きましょう。
Natsuko: なるほど。
Peter: Okay I see.
Natsuko: なるほど、あなたの言うとおりですね。
Peter: Really. It’s just as you said.
Naomi: 次は、気を失う。
Peter: To black out.
Naomi: 気は
Peter: Consciousness.
Naomi: 失う
Peter: To lose.
Naomi: 例えば、私は頭を打って気を失った。
Peter: I hit my head hard and I blacked out.
Natsuko: 次は、ドジな。
Peter: Silly, stupid.
Natsuko: これは友達同士でよく使ったりしますよね。
Natsuko: そうですね。カジュアルな言葉ですよね。
Peter: Fool or stupid, foolish. Used as an adjective foolish, stupid, used as a noun, fool.
Natsuko: このfoolはでも、なんていうか Acting ridiculously という意味での fool ではなくって not intentionally but makes a lot of mistakes という意味なんですね。
Peter: ああ。
Natsuko: うん。なのかな?その辺のニュアンスがちょっと難しいんですけど。だから、例えばしょっちゅう忘れ物をしたり、後は、不注意で何かによくぶつかっちゃったり。
Peter: So someone who forgets things a lot or bumps into stuff unintentionally.
Natsuko: だからなんかこう Careless という感じですかね。例えば、曜日を間違えるなんてドジだなぁ。
Peter: How foolish are you? You are confused with the days of the week.
Natsuko: あ、でもよくやるんですよね。私もね。
Peter: 私も。あ、今日は何曜日ですか?
Natsuko: 木曜日なのにね、あ、今日もう金曜日だ!なんて思ってたりしてね。
Naomi: うん。ありますよね。
Natsuko: 明日休みだ!なんて。あ、違うじゃない。

Lesson focus

Peter: Today’s grammar point is
Naomi: ところ
Peter: It’s the noun which literally means place.
Peter: Now here it’s used to point out a place in time. There are three patterns of this expression. First we have verb, plain non-past plus ところ. This expresses a state or time an action is about to occur. For example, Naomi Sensei, can we have a verb in the plain non-past, any verb?
Naomi: 食べる
Peter: To eat. When we follow this with ところ we get
Naomi: 食べるところ
Peter: To eat, place. This means about to eat. Next we have verb plain past plus
Naomi: ところ
Peter: This expresses a state or time an action just occurred. Let’s have the same verb
Naomi: 食べる
Peter: In the plain past.
Naomi: 食べた
Peter: Which means ate. When we follow this with ところ, we get
Naomi: 食べたところ
Peter: Just ate. Next we have て form of a verb plus
Naomi: いる
Peter: Plus
Naomi: ところ
Peter: This expresses a state or time an action is occurring. Let’s take the same verb and let’s put it in the ている form which is present progressive.
Naomi: 食べている
Peter: To be eating. When we follow it with
Naomi: ところ
Peter: Is eating now. Right at this point in time. So you see here how ところ is used to point the time at which something is about to happen, just happened or is happening. Gives you a clear definition of the time in which something is happening. Happened or is about to happen. So in today’s conversation, we had an example of two of the three. First one
Naomi: お菓子を買って出るところに強盗が入ってきて
Peter: When I was about to leave after buying snacks, the burglar came in 出るところ That point in time when the subject will leave. Now I want to point out what comes after the ところに. So here we have 出るところに. Some instances you see 出るところを marking that point in time when something was about to happen. So the difference here between when I was in the store, when I was about to leave, that instant when I was about to leave, something happened. Here you get a more focused point in time 出るところに、出るところを. So you notice that ところ is followed by a particle. In this sentence, we have に. In the following sentence, it’s followed by を. It can also be followed by で. Now in your mind, you should separate ところ from the particle. There is not a strong correlation between these two but rather pointing to the phrase before it or in relation to the verb coming after it. Next we have.
Naomi: 転んだところを押さえつけました。
Peter: I held him down right after he fell. Here we have the plain past followed by ところ. Although we don’t have a subject, it can be inferred. After the robber fell, I held him down and here ところ is followed by を. So the particle that follows ところ depends on the sentence. So this is a topic for another lesson in itself but it can be followed by many different particles に、を. You will see shortly also で. So many particles can follow this. So this に and を the particle that follows the ところ depends on the verb that follows that and of course the context.

Outro

Peter: So be sure to check out the PDF. Inside the PDF, a very detailed write up about this. That’s going to do for today.
Natsuko: それじゃあ、また今度。
Peter: じゃあね。
Natsuko: じゃあ、また。
