えーっす!えーっす!(Ēssu! Ēssu!) Hi everyone. Welcome to Kanji time. Today, let’s review N4 kanji. 参りましょう。(Mairimashō.) If you want to do the quiz first, please go to these times.
This kanji means ray, light. The on-reading is コウ (kō) as in 観光 (kankō) meaning sight-seeing. And the kun-reading for this kanji is ひかり、ひか (hikari, hika) as in 光る (hikaru) meaning to shine, glitter.
This kanji means public, prince, official, governmental. The on-reading is コウ、ク (kō, ku) as in 公園 (kōen) meaning park and the kun-reading for this kanji is おおやけ (ōyake) as in 公の場 (ōyake no ba) meaning public appearances.
This kanji means copy, to be photographed, describe. The on-reading is シャ (sha) as in 写真 (shashin) meaning photograph. And the kun-reading is うつ (utsu) as in 写す (utsusu) meaning to copy 写す (utsusu) to copy.
This kanji means winter. The on-reading is トウ (tō) as in 冬至 (tōji) meaning winter solstice. And the kun-reading is ふゆ (fuyu) as in 真冬 (mafuyu) meaning middle of the winter. 真冬、寒い。 (Mafuyu, samui.) Middle of winter is called 真冬 (mafuyu) and middle of the summer is 真夏 (manatsu). 真夏は暑い。真冬は寒い。(Manatsu wa atsui. Mafuyu wa samui.)
This kanji means cut, cut off, be sharp. The on-reading is セツ、サイ (setsu, sai) as in 大切 (taisetsu) meaning important. 大切。 (Taisetsu.) And the kun-reading is き (ki) as in 切る (kiru) meaning to cut.
