客: りょうしテレポーテーション装置が付いてるのか?
店員: もちっすよ。
客: むむ。りょうしテレポーテーション装置か…
Rie: Rieです。
Yuuki: Yuukiです。
Marky: Marky here. Welcome to part 2 of our Niigata dialect expose.
Rie: 新潟弁講座その2へようこそ。
Marky: Oh yeah!
Yuuki: Oh yeah!
Rie: Oh yeah!

Lesson focus

Marky: All right. So as you can tell, today we are joined once again by Yuuki and the lovely Rie and we are going to get down and dirty with the Niigata dialect. Let’s jump right into it. Yuuki, who are our two characters today?
Yuuki: Kenshin and Shiori
Marky: Kenshin, is this an everyday name?
Yuuki: Kenshin is from 上杉謙信. He was born in Niigata and 戦国武将.
Marky: So Uesugi Kenshin was a famous general from Niigata, well what is now Niigata in the Sengoku era so the Warring States period in Japanese history. He is a very famous guy.
Rie: 上杉謙信、かっこいいな。 And Shiori is my sister’s name.
Yuuki: Shioriちゃん、かわいいな。
Marky: All right, so we are going to listen to the conversation between these two people and it looks like there is a little bit of a misunderstanding. Here we go.
詩織: やぃや、いとぉーしげらねぇ。おなごのこらかね?
謙信: 男ん子らよ。
詩織: おーここ、なにね、そうらけ?あんまいとしげらすけ、おなごのこらかと思たてぇ。かんべしてくんなせや。なんて名前らいや?
謙信: 浩介らよ。
詩織: こんがさぁべ所にいねぇて、はよ帰らせ!ぼぼ、風邪こと引くこてね。
謙信: そーせば、帰るこてさ。
Rie: 標準語でお願いします。
詩織: うわぁ、かわいいね。女の子?
謙信: 男の子だよ。
詩織: あらららら、なんだって。そうなの!?とってもかわいいんで、女の子かと思ったよ。ごめんごめん。なんていう名前?
謙信: 浩介だよ。
詩織: こんな寒いところにいないで、早く帰りなよ。あかちゃん、風邪を引いちゃうよ。
謙信: それじゃ帰るわ。
Rie:
Rie: 次は英語が入ります。
詩織: やぃや、いとぉーしげらねぇ。おなごのこらかね?
Oh wow! So cute. Is she a girl?
謙信: 男ん子らよ。
He is a boy.
詩織: おーここ、なにね、そうらけ?あんまいとしげらすけ、おなごのこらかと思たてぇ。かんべしてくんなせや。なんて名前らいや?
Oh really, I thought he was a girl because he is so cute, I am sorry. What’s his name?
謙信: 浩介らよ。
His name is Kosuke.
詩織: こんがさぁべ所にいねぇて、はよ帰らせ!ぼぼ、風邪こと引くこてね。
You should go home now, it’s cold here. The baby might catch a cold.
謙信: そーせば、帰るこてさ。
All right. Then we will go home.
Yuuki: Rieさん、この会話はどう思いましたか?
Rie: またまた、これも道端でよく聞かれる会話です。
Yuuki: This conversation is often heard on the street.
Marky: Yeah I think so. Babies are usually very cute but the really young ones, it’s hard to tell if it’s a boy or girl. So let’s take a look at today’s lesson’s vocabulary. First we have
Yuuki: いとしげ
Marky: Cute.
Yuuki: いとしげ。いとしげ。
Marky: Can you give us an example?
Rie: いとしげなあかごらね。
Yuuki: かわいい赤ちゃんですね。
Marky: That’s a cute baby, isn’t it? Next we have
Rie: おなご
Marky: A girl.
Rie: おなご。おなご。
Marky: So this seems like a combination of two words.
Yuuki: なand ご
Marky: What’s ご?
Yuuki: ご is こ which means kids.
Marky: So in this case,
Yuuki: 女の子 the girl. Rieさん、新潟弁で「男の子」は何ですか?
Rie: 「おとこんこ」です。
Marky: And this is also two words
Yuuki: おとこ and こ
Marky: So a boy, right. So can you give us an example how to use this word?
Yuuki: あのおなご、いとしげやのう。
Rie: あの女の子かわいいね。
Marky: That girl is so cute, isn’t she? Okay next we have.
Rie: おーここ。
Marky: Wow!
Rie: おーここ。おーここ。おーここ、もう12時らて。
Yuuki: あらら、もう12時だよ。
Marky: Whoa it’s already 12 AM, next we have
Yuuki: なにね?
Marky: What?
Yuuki: なにね。なにね。
Rie: なにね。よう聞こえねえてば。
Yuuki: え?よく聞こえないよ。
Marky: What? I can’t really hear you. Okay next.
Rie: あんま
Marky: Very.
Rie: あんま。あんま。
Marky: Last time, we learned the word ばか for very. Is this word different or the same or what’s going on here?
Yuuki: I think this means the same but this あんま is usually attached to negative sentences.
Rie: This is same as あんまり
Marky: Okay. So that’s pretty familiar for us. Can you give us an example how to use this?
Rie: あんま安くねえのう。
Yuuki: あんまり安くないな。
Marky: That’s not so cheap. That’s not really cheap. Next we have
Rie: かんべ。
Marky: To be sorry. To ask for forgiveness.
Rie: かんべ。かんべ。あー、また宿題忘れてしもうたて。かんべしてくんらせや。
Yuuki: あー、また宿題忘れてしまった。勘弁して下さい。
Marky: Oh I forgot my homework again, please forgive me.
Yuuki: This かんべ originally comes from 勘弁 means just forgive me. Ask forgiveness.
Marky: So you can use this in standard Japanese if we use the regular pronunciation?
Yuuki: We use this with 下さい which is 勘弁して下さい。
Marky: Please forgive me.
Yuuki: 勘弁 is usually used to ごめんなさい。
Marky: And it’s a kind of casual way to do it right?
Yuuki: Right.
Marky: Okay. So next we have
Rie: はよ。
Marky: Quickly, quick.
Rie: はよ。はよ。
Marky: Okay this sounds familiar to all of us I am sure.
Yuuki: 早く。
Marky: Okay. So quickly, can you show us how to use this?
Rie: はよ行こてば。
Yuuki: 早く行こうよ。
Marky: Hurry up, let’s go and finally we have
Rie: そっでは。
Marky: Then.
Rie: そっでは。そっでは。そっでは、まず。
Yuuki: それでは、さようなら。
Marky: Well then, goodbye. Okay couple of points of interest in this conversation. The first we are going to talk about are
Yuuki: やいや and おーここ
Marky: And these are both interjections.
Yuuki: Rieさん、これ使いますか?「おーここ」と「やいや」
Rie: そうですね。新潟人は、驚いたときにとっさに出てきます。
Marky: So people from Niigata instinctively use this word she said and this can be used for both good situations and bad situations.
Rie: そうですね。
Marky: Also we saw an interesting interrogative construction.
Yuuki: かね。
Marky: What is this in standard Japanese?
Yuuki: ですか?なの?
Marky: And in the dialogue what did we see, Rieさん?
Rie: おなごのこらかね?
Marky: Is this a girl? Rieさん、 Can you give us an example how to use this?
Rie: 明日は会社に来るんかね?
Yuuki: 明日は会社に来るのか?
Marky: Are you coming to the office tomorrow? Are you coming to work tomorrow?
Rie: ちゃんと宿題はやったんかね?
Yuuki: ちゃんと宿題をやったの?
Marky: Have you finished your homework yet. Now Yuuki san, what is this こてね and こてさ?
Yuuki: This means in the standard Japanese, it is like ちゃう、なんだよ、でしょう。
Marky: So it has a kind of negative meaning.
Yuuki: Yeah it’s like inferring regulating and warning for the future.
Marky: What was the example we saw in the dialogue
Rie: ぼぼ、風邪こと引くこてね。
Yuuki: 赤ちゃん、風邪ひいちゃうよ。
Marky: Your baby might catch a cold. So in this example こてね was attached to the plain form of the verb ひく. Is it a standard formation?
Rie: そうですね。そのまま動詞の後に付けます。
Marky: So let’s try a couple more examples.
Rie: そんげがん食ったら、腹こわすこてね。
Yuuki: そんなの食べたら、腹こわすよ。
Marky: If you eat that kind of food, you will have stomach trouble.
Rie: そんげことしたら、かかぁに怒られるこてね。
Yuuki: そんなことしたら、お母さんに怒られちゃう。
Marky: If I do those kinds of things, my mom gets angry at me.
Rie: だすけ、Marky、そんげことやめろて言うたこて。
Marky: Oh I am in trouble again.
Yuuki: Rieさん、お母さんは「かかぁ」ですけど、お父さんは何て言いますか?
Rie: お父さんは新潟弁で、「つぁつぁ」と言います。
Marky: Can you say that one more time?
Rie: つぁつぁ
Yuuki: So みなさん have you noticed that in Niigata dialect, there is ら sound instead of だsound.
Marky: Yeah. I think we saw that last time. I remember seeing らの
Yuuki: だよ。
Marky: So this seems like a very important aspect of dialect. So can you give us a couple more examples?
Rie: おとこんこらよ。
Yuuki: 男の子だよ。
Marky: He is a boy.
Rie: おなごの子らかと思たて。
Yuuki: 女の子だと思ったよ。

Outro

Marky: I thought she was a boy. All right guys, I think that’s all the time we’ve got today. I had a lot of fun, how about you?
Yuuki: Me too.
Rie: 超たのしかった。
Marky: So you guys, we have one more coming up. So you don’t want to miss it. Be sure to check out the PDF.
Rie: PDFで勉強して新潟に遊びに来てくんなせや。
Marky: And be sure to try to leave a post in the Niigata dialect on the message board. Impress your friends and other Jpod users. Oh yeah!
Rie: そっでは、まず。

Mina-san, how much of it could you catch? Can you hear the intonation differences? If you're interested in this dialect, we highly recommend trying out the Line By Line Audio in the Learning Center. You'll astound your Japanese friends if you can get this intonation down pat.

Man, I love the 新潟弁 lessons. Do you have any plans to do any other dialects? I'm sure there are plenty of people who want to know 大阪/関西弁. 鹿児島弁もワッゼ面白いよ!

This time I understood all the conversation.

Perhaps because I spent a few days in Himi. Is it the same dialect?

I didn't understand a single thing...apart from thair having to go back to some place.

It feels slightly weird knowing you're listening to japanese but not getting a single word... I love the sounds in this dialect.

I think なにね is pretty cool ! This is one word I'm bound to use and abuse :mrgreen:
