Please don't get lost when I read the manga.
Okay?
As usual, first we are going to watch the new anime episode.
After that, we read through the manga together, break down the dialogue, explain the vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation, and help you understand everything step by step.
Anna and Nana are once again here to guide us through a lesson in ordering food at the restaurant and talking about what you cannot or don't eat.
A practical skill we all need to know and understand in Japan.
Nana has to stick to the budget even more after the cooking disaster for dinner, but Anna really wants something yummy because she is starving.
Anna and Nana's adventures continue with this anime short made especially for you.

Okay, now we have read the manga.
The ramen was cheap, but Anna didn't seem all too satisfied, huh?
The main idea here is ordering food at the restaurant, and talking about dietary preferences and restrictions.
These manga are supposed to help you with skills you would be able to apply in everyday life.
So, let's dive a bit deeper, and really get to understand everything Anna and Nana said.

Pretty simple concept, right?
Key patterns and grammar are next.
So let's switch into learning mode and make sure you have no doubts left by the end of this video.
Lesson 5: Ordering Food.
Learning goals.
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to: Check.
Order food and drinks.
Just like in manga, you'll learn how to order food and drinks in Japanese.
Check 2.
Explain dietary preferences and restrictions.
Restrictions.
So learn how to tell the waiter what you don't like or can't eat.
Okay, let's have a look at the dialogue first.
Select all.
Dialogue.
Situation: Ordering food and drinks.
塩ラーメンを二つと、お水を二つお願いします。(Shio rāmen o futatsu to, o-mizu o futatsu onegai shimasu.)
ねぎ抜きにしてください。(Negi nuki ni shite kudasai.)
So 塩ラーメンを二つと、お水を二つお願いします。(So Shio rāmen o futatsu to, o-mizu o futatsu onegai shimasu.)
ねぎ抜きにしてください。(Negi nuki ni shite kudasai.)
Two salt ramen and two glasses of water, please.
Please remove the green onions.
Okay, so let's have a look at the vocabulary.
塩(shio)
salt
ラーメン(rāmen)
ramen
お水(o-mizu)
water
お願いします(onegai shimasu)
please
ねぎ(negi)
green onion
抜き(nuki)
remove
Key pattern.
First one, thing をお願いします (o onegai shimasu).
So this is how you can order food and drinks.
Thing, food or drink, をお願いします (o onegai shimasu).
Thing, please.
Here, making requests with をお願いします (o onegai shimasu).
Use をお願いします (o onegai shimasu) to place your order with the waiter.
Item をお願いします (o onegai shimasu).
Easy, right?
サラダをお願いします。(Sarada o onegai shimasu.)
Salad, please.
サラダをお願いします。(Sarada o onegai shimasu.)
Or, um, let's say if you want Coca-Cola, コーラをお願いします (kōra o onegaishimasu), something like that.
Just thing you want and お願いします (onegai shimasu).
Easy.
Next key pattern.
Food は食べられません (wa taberaremasen).
So this is the second part here, explain dietary preferences and restrictions.
I cannot eat food.
For example, let's explain a little bit more here.
Expressing what you do not eat with 食べません (tabemasen).
So use は食べません (wa tabemasen) to clearly state what food you avoid.
Food category or food, drink は食べません (wa tabemasen).
You can also say 飲みません (nomimasen) if it's...
アルコールは飲みません。(Arukōru wa nomimasen.)
And food だったら (dattara), food は食べません (wa tabemasen).
For example, if you don't eat fish, you say 魚は食べません (sakana wa tabemasen).
I do not eat fish.
You can also say 食べません。
食べませんじゃない、食べられません。(Tabemasen ja nai, taberaremasen.)
So, 食べません (tabemasen)...
It's quite a straightforward way of saying you do not eat something, but if you want to say you cannot eat because of the allergy or because of your, you know, other reasons, you can also say 食べられません (taberaremasen), I cannot eat.
So for example, 魚は食べられません (Sakana wa taberaremasen), I cannot eat fish.
Or お肉は食べられません (Oniku wa taberaremasen), I cannot eat meat.
Or 甲殻類は食べられません (Kōkakurui wa taberaremasen).
I cannot eat shellfish, かな (kana)?
It's a bit difficult word, 甲殻類 (kōkakurui).
Like shrimp, crab.
What else?
甲殻類
甲殻類(Kōkakurui)
Right?
Okay, so next.
Vocabulary memorization.
Ordering food.
Ordering from a menu.
Okay, so すみません (Sumimasen), ラーメンをお願いします (Rāmen o onegai shimasu).
Excuse me, I'd like ramen.
You can replace this part, this blue highlighted part.
Why am I always so shaky?
So you can replace here.
For example, if you want the menu, you say すみません、
すみません、(sumimasen,)
メニューをお願いします。(Menyū o onegai shimasu.)
Excuse me, I'd like the menu, please.
お水をお願いします。(Sumimasen, o-mizu o onegai shimasu.)
Usually, in Japanese restaurant, water is free.
So you can get water for free.
You can just ask them, you know, "Can I have a water?"
すみません、お水をお願いします。(Sumimasen, o-mizu o onegai shimasu.)
すみません、お水をお願いします。
Even politer with "Excuse me," right?
And then how about, hmm, maybe I can introduce few more.
コーヒー。(Kōhī.)
すみません、コーヒーをお願いします。(Sumimasen, kōhī o onegai shimasu.)
(Sumimasen, kōhī o onegai shimasu.)
ホットですか?(Hotto desu ka?)
アイスですか?(Aisu desu ka?)
Or 温かいのですか?
Or 冷たいのですか?
So hot coffee or cold coffee.
You can choose.
And then next, how about this one?
すみません、セットをお願いします。(Sumimasen, setto o onegai shimasu.)
What is セット (setto)?
So セット (setto), a combo meal or a set meal.
In Japan, many restaurants often offer a set menu.
So, you know, which includes a main dish and one or more side dishes for a lower price.
セット(Setto)
このセットメニューをお願いします。
すみません、セットをお願いします。(Sumimasen, setto o onegai shimasu.)
Or you might even hear 定食 (teishoku).
定食(teishoku)
Main dish, rice, and miso soup, and some small things.
That's 定食 (teishoku).
So yeah, similar to set, but 定食 (teishoku) is like that, you know, main, rice, and miso.
All right, so examples.
Casual.
ラーメン、ちょうだい。(Rāmen, chōdai.)
Give me ramen.
Make sure you don't use this for the people in the restaurant.
You can say this to your friends or family when they are trying ramen and you say, "Oh, I wanna try that too."
ラーメン、ちょうだい。(Rāmen, chōdai.)
Okay, this is okay.
But when you want to order and you say, "ラーメンちょうだい (rāmen chōdai)," no, no, no, this sounds rude, so be careful.
Sometimes in a restaurant you might hear people ordering like this, but maybe they know each other or something like that.
Or some older men, you know, they talk like this.
It's like, ラーメンちょうだい (rāmen chōdai).
Yeah, that's okay, but I don't think you wanna use this in a place where you've never been, so make sure use the next one.
ラーメンをお願いします。(Rāmen o onegai shimasu.)
I'd like ramen, please.
Good.
Formal, so little more polite.
ラーメンをお願いできますか?(Rāmen o onegai dekimasu ka?)
Could I possibly trouble you for a ramen?
It sounds to me the translation is even more, but yeah.
ラーメンをお願いします。(Rāmen o onegai shimasu.)
ラーメンをお願いできますか?(Rāmen o onegai dekimasu ka?)
みたいな感じですかね。(Mitai na kanji desu ka ne.)
So if you don't know which one to use, just use the polite one.
Okay, next page.
Grammar understanding.
Ordering food and explaining dietary restrictions, preferences.
ラーメンをお願いします。(Rāmen o onegai shimasu.)
Ramen, please.
Ordering food.
ねぎが苦手だから、ねぎ抜きでお願いします。(Negi ga nigate da kara, negi nuki de onegai shimasu.)
Dietary restrictions.
Okay, so, um, so...
Explaining reasons, too.
First, ordering food.
To order food or drinks at the restaurant, you place the direct object particle を (o) after the item you want, followed by お願いします (onegai shimasu).
It's like a puzzle.
So if you look up here, it's easy.
Item, noun, を (o), お願いします (onegai shimasu).
You can actually omit を (o) too, but it sounds politer if you add を (o).
So ラーメン、お願いします (Rāmen, onegai shimasu), okay.
ラーメンをお願いします。(Rāmen o onegai shimasu.)
ちょっと声が裏返っちゃいましたけど。(Chotto koe ga uragaeratchaimashita kedo.)
ラーメンをお願いします。(Rāmen o onegai shimasu.)
It's maybe even better.
So, imagine if you're in Japan, what would you like to try in Japan?
Hmm.
お好み焼き(O-konomiyaki)
お好み焼きをお願いします。(O-konomiyaki o onegai shimasu.)
Or sushi?
寿司をお願いします。(Sushi o onegai shimasu.)
But sushi, you need to tell them which sushi you want, so イクラをお願いしますとかね。(But sushi, you need to tell them which sushi you want, so Ikura o onegai shimasu to ka ne.)
いくらって salmon egg かな?(Ikura tte salmon egg ka na?)
Yeah, so something like that.
Just add をお願いします (o onegai shimasu).
If it's drink, オレンジジュースをお願いします (Orenji jūsu o onegai shimasu).
Orange juice, please.
Okay, so next we have dietary restrictions.
To state what you do not eat or drink, use the negative verbs 食べません (tabemasen), do not eat, or 飲みません (nomimasen), do not drink.
お酒は飲みません。(O-sake wa nomimasen.)
お酒は(O-sake wa)
I don't drink alcohol.
お酒は
(O-sake wa)
飲みません。(Nomimasen.)
So you can replace this part with food or drink, other food or other drinks.
Um, 何がいいかな。(Um, nani ga ii ka na.)
何がいいかな。(Nani ga ii ka na.)
食べ物だったら...
Yes, if it's food, let's say you don't eat shrimp, えび (ebi).
エビ。(Ebi.)
えびは食べません。(Ebi wa tabemasen.)
I don't eat shrimp.
お肉は食べません。(O-niku wa tabemasen.)
お肉は食べません。(O-niku wa tabemasen.)
I don't eat meat.
Okay?
So just replace this part with 飲みません (nomimasen) or 食べません (tabemasen).
Then explaining reasons.
When you want to give a reason for a preference or a request, attach から (kara) to the end of your reason.
It translates directly to "because it is" or "so."
So here, example.
Reason is, "I don't like green onions, so please leave them out."
ねぎが苦手(Negi ga nigate)
You know, you don't like ねぎ (negi).
から (kara), ねぎ抜きでお願いします (negi nuki de onegai shimasu).
ねぎが苦手だから、ねぎ抜きでお願いします。(Negi ga nigate da kara, negi nuki de onegai shimasu.)
Am I pronouncing ねぎ (negi) okay?
そ ねぎが苦手だから、ねぎ抜きでお願いします。(Negi ga nigate da kara, negi nuki de onegai shimasu.)
I don't like green onions, so please leave them out.
You can also say, instead of 抜き (nuki), you can say なし (nashi).
なし(Nashi)
None.
ねぎが苦手だから、ねぎなしでお願いします。(Negi ga nigate da kara, negi nashi de onegai shimasu.)
That's totally fine.
Right, so, um, yes, or は食べられません (wa taberaremasen) is quite useful here.
は(Wa)
食べられない(taberarenai)
食べられない
から(Kara)
Or ので (node) is also fine.
から (kara), I'm gonna stick with から (kara) here.
So for example, ねぎが苦手 (negi ga nigate) means you don't like green onions, right?
But if you say ねぎは食べられない (negi wa taberarenai), means you can't eat green onions.
So let's say meat.
お肉は食べられないからお肉抜きでお願いします。(O-niku wa taberarenai kara o-niku nuki de onegai shimasu.)
Okay?
Or you can just say, お肉抜きでお願いします (o-niku nuki de onegai shimasu).
ねぎ抜きでお願いします。(Negi nuki de onegai shimasu.)
お肉なしでお願いします。(O-niku nashi de onegai shimasu.)
お肉なしでお願いします。(O-niku nashi de onegai shimasu.)
Something like that.
Side-by-side translation.
The sisters decided to eat out at the nearby shop.
Still intent on keeping expenses low, Nana tries her best to ensure Anna doesn't order too much.
She surely did.
Okay, let's have a look again.
Do, do, do, dun, dun.
Do, do, do, dun, dun.
Tururun, turururun.

Excuse me, bill please.
ナナ、本当に大丈夫?(Nana, hontō ni daijōbu?)
Nana, are you really all right?
大丈夫。(Daijōbu.)
ちょっと疲れてるだけだから。(Chotto tsukaretiru dake dakara.)
I'm fine.
Just a little tired.
帰ろう。(Kaerō.)
Let's go home.
あ!(A!)
コンビニ寄っていい?(Konbini yotte ii?)
Ah, can we stop by the convenience store?
鶏肉が食べたい。(Toriniku ga tabetai.)
I want to buy some chicken for a snack.
家にチョコレートがあるでしょ、デザート用に。(Ie ni chokorēto ga aru desho, dezāto yō ni.)
You have your chocolates as dessert at home, don't you?
でも夕食の前に食べちゃった。(Demo yūshoku no mae ni tabechatta.)
But I finished them before dinner.
知らない!(Shiranai!)
知らない!(Shiranai!)
I don't care.
Phew!
You've aced ordering in Japanese now, haven't you?
Now that the learning is over with, let's practice.
I'll show you how to do the first few questions on the practice pages, then it's up to you to finish them on your own.
I know you can do it.
Reading.
Answer the questions below based on the story you just read.
So you need to remember the story.
Let's have a look at the first question.
A, what was Nana's issue with the chashu ramen?
Why she didn't want Anna to order chashu ramen, remember?
A.
It was already sold out.
B.
It was too expensive for them to order a bowl each.
C.
She doesn't find it appetizing.
D.
It looks too spicy for her.
But Anna wanted to order, so it's not she doesn't find it appetizing.
It's not it looks too spicy for her.
It was B, too expensive for them to order a bowl each.
Her budget was 2,000 yen, and chashu ramen was more than 1,000 yen per person.
B.
Okay.
So like this you can answer B, C, D by yourself.
Okay.
Next page.
Vocabulary.
Your task is to translate and then to find and circle the vocabulary words hidden in the grid.
So this pool of characters mixed with hiragana and katakana, you need to find first ビール (bīru).
ビール (bīru) in English, how do you spell?
Let me try.
Beer.
Good.
Okay.
So ビール (bīru), beer.
Can you find ビール (bīru) in here?
I can.
ビール
(bīru)
Da, da, da, da, da, dun.
Da, da, da, da, dun.
And then next, おみず (omizu).
お水 (o-mizu) in English, water.
That I can spell.
Water.
お水
(omizu)
どこかな。(Doko ka na.)
(Doko ka na.)
Ten, ta, ra, ra.
Na, na, na, na, na.
はい、あります。(Hai, arimasu.)
(Hai, arimasu.)
お水
(omizu)
お水
(omizu)
Water.
So like this way you can complete from C to J by yourself.
I know you can do it.
Grammar.
Look at the pictures.
Fill in what you are asking for in part one, and in part two, fill in the appropriate negative responses.
So let's have a look this example.
A, asking for menu first.
メニューをお願いします。(Menyū o onegai shimasu.)
Remember?
You just need to add を (o) お願いします (onegaishimasu) after the thing you want.
The thing you want here is menu.
メニューをお願いします。(Menyū o onegai shimasu.)
Simple, right?
And then, um, G, negative responses.
So you want to say you don't eat cheese.
How do you say it?
Cheese is チーズ (chīzu).
チーズは食べません。(Chīzu wa tabemasen.)
チーズは食べません。(Chīzu wa tabemasen.)
チーズは食べません。(Chīzu wa tabemasen.)
(Chīzu wa tabemasen.)
I don't eat cheese.
Or if you want to say, "I can't eat cheese," you say, チーズは食べられません (chīzu wa taberaremasen).
Yes, I got confused.
チーズは食べられません。(Chīzu wa taberaremasen.)
So チーズは食べません (chīzu wa tabemasen).
チーズは食べられません。(Chīzu wa taberaremasen.)
Okay, so like this you can do B to L.
Let's try writing.
Look at the image and write down Anna's order with help of words in the word bank.
So let's see this photo.
Photo?
Picture.
And, um, Anna wants to order ramen and water.
So let's make a sentence using this word bank.
Ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba.
By the way, it's really hard to write with this.
That's why it looks like this.
I'm just telling you.
Okay.
So first, um, salt ramen in Japanese is 塩ラーメン (shio rāmen).
So 塩 (shio) ラーメン (rāmen).(So shio rāmen.)
So 塩 (shio) ラーメン (rāmen).
Do you know what comes next?
So this one is used, 塩ラーメン (shio rāmen).
You wanna say "and", と (to)?
What is this?
It's お水 (omizu).
So 塩ラーメンとお水 (shio rāmen to omizu)...
Ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba.
Can you make the sentence?
Let's try.
I hope you enjoyed Anna and Nana ordering ramen at the restaurant.
Nana seems to be in a bit of a predicament.
I hope she gets better.
There is more to come, so keep an eye out so you can master more everyday life situations in Japanese.
Don't forget to go over the practice pages to test your understanding of the lesson.
And I will see you in the next video.
Bye.
