こちらの住人なのですが、キッチンのトースターが故障してしまいました。

よし、掃除はこれで終わり。
ナナお腹ペコペコ。
近くのラーメン屋に行こう。
洗濯は後でいい。
えー、ステーキが良かった。
無駄遣いしなくなったら考えてあげる。
もうわかった。
まずトイレ。
ハクション!
掃除中のほこりのせいかな…
Okay, now we have read the manga.
I wonder what's wrong with Nana.
Hmm.
The main idea here is soft commands and talking about changing states.
...help you with skills you would be able to apply in everyday life.
So, let's dive a bit deeper and really get to understand everything Anna and Nana said.
Issue 4: Doing Chores.
前回、アンナとナナは料理をしました。
でも、キッチンが大変なことになってしまいました。
この絵を見るとすごく汚れているのがわかりますね。
今回のトピックは Doing chores。
日本語で家の仕事、つまり家事というトピックです。
それでは見てみましょう!
(Sore dewa mite mimashō!)
Okay.
じゃあさっさと掃除して外に食べに行くか。
この「さっさと (sassato)」というのは「早く (hayaku)」「急いで (isoide)」という意味ですね。
早く掃除をしてご飯を食べに行きましょうという意味です。
ナナ…
(Nana...)
アンナ、
(Anna,)
床を拭いて。
(Yuka o fuite.)
Okay, next.
ゴシゴシゴシ、ゴシゴシゴシ。
でも、この焦げがなかなか落ちない…
「なかなか (nakanaka)」
「なかなか」というのは簡単に落ちないということです。
焦げが落ちるのが難しいですということですね。
なかなか落ちません。
そしてアンナさんが「ナナ、見て」。
この「て (te)」もまた今日のレッスンフォーカスの指示をする時、ソフトコマンドの言い方です。
「ナナ、見て」
Look, look.
All right.
Next.
「あとはここだけー」
「あと」
この「あと」というのは「残りは」ということです。
なので、掃除する残りはここだけということですね。
で、最後の掃除をしようとしてる時に、アンナさんが「はい、ナナ、一つどうぞ!」と言ってチョコレートを差し出しています。
「チョコレートをどうぞ。」
「一つどうぞ。」
なんで?
(Nande?)
なんで今チョコレート食べてるの?
この「なんで (nande)」は「どうして (dōshite)」という意味なんですが、この場面では驚きや呆れた気持ちも表しています。
なんで今!
(Nande ima!)
Right?
食べてるの
(tabeteru no)
デザートじゃないの?
(Dezāto ja nai no?)
この「じゃないの」という表現は、よいしょ。
何々でしょう。
(Naninani deshō.)
何々ですよね。
(Naninani desu yo ne.)
ということですね。
(to iu koto desu ne.)
デザートではデザート。
チョコレートはデザートでしょう。
という感じです。
(to iu kanji desu.)
お腹すいた〜
(Onaka suita~)
だから早く掃除して。
だから。
(Dakara.)
(Nikushoku desu ne.)
無駄遣いしなくなったら考えてあげる。
この「考えてあげる」というのは、相手のために何かをするという意味ですが、この場面では少し上目線で考えてあげてもいいよというニュアンスになっています。
なので「無駄遣いしなくなったら考えます」じゃなくて、「無駄遣いしなくなったら考えてあげる」っていう感じです。
もう、わかった。
(Mō, wakatta.)
まずトイレと言って、アンナさんトイレに駆け込みます。
そしてナナさんが。
掃除中のホコリのせいかな。
せいかな…
(Sei ka na...)
「かな」は、何々かもしれない、どうかなという軽い独り言や推測を表します。
ああ、くしゃみ、さっき掃除の時のホコリのせいかな?
っていうことですね。
(Tte iu koto desu ne.)
大丈夫でしょうか、ナナさん。
いいですね。
(Ii desu ne.)
You have no problems understanding chores in Japanese now, do you?
Key patterns and grammar are next, so let's switch into learning mode and make sure you have no doubts left by the end of this video.
Lesson four, doing chores.
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to: check, talk about making something happen using にする (ni suru), and delegate tasks using て (te).
Okay, so first let's have a look at the dialogue.
Situation, asking someone to do something.
キッチンを掃除して。
Clean the kitchen.
(Kitchin o sōji shite.)
私は皿洗いとカウンターをきれいにします。
(Watashi wa saraarai to kauntā o kirei ni shimasu.)
I will make the plates and countertop clean.
And here the vocabulary in case if you didn't understand the whole dialogue.
(fuku)
clothes
(fuku)
洗濯
(sentaku)
laundry
This is old way to do laundry.
きれい
(kirei)
clean
It also means beautiful, but here it specifically means clean.
So key pattern, Task して (shite).
So this is the way to ask someone to do something casually, right?
It's this one.
Key pattern.
Task して
(shite)
Do task.
Explanation is here.
Grammar, て (te) form for soft commands.
By using the て (te) form of a verb by itself, you create a casual soft command.
So it's really easy to make a soft command.
Verb する (suru).
Do you remember the て (te) form of the verb する (suru)?
Yes, that is して (shite).
So change する (suru) to して (shite).
For example, 洗濯する (sentaku suru), do the laundry.
And you wanna ask someone to do the laundry.
You need to make する (suru) into て (te) form.
洗濯する becomes 洗濯して。
洗濯して
(sentaku shite)
Here.
するがしてになります。
(suru ga shite ni narimasu.)
Do the laundry.
And how about 休む (yasumu)?
Meaning to take a rest, but you wanna say to someone, "Take a rest."
How do you say that?
In this case, て (te)-form of 休む (yasumu) is 休んで (yasunde).
休んで
(yasunde)
So you say to someone, "休んで (yasunde). You need to take a rest."
休む (yasumu) becomes 休んで (yasunde).
Okay?
And the second key pattern is adjective, noun, にする (ni suru), くする (ku suru).
Make it adjective or noun.
So this is this.
So explanation is here.
Changing states with にする (ni suru).
When you want to say you are making something change into a certain state, you use the grammar pattern にする (ni suru).
How you attach the adjective depends on whether it is a な (na)-adjective or an い (i)-adjective.
So for example, object を (o), な (na), if it's な (na)-adjective, plus にする (ni suru).
きれい (kirei) is a な (na)-adjective, right?
So きれい (kirei) becomes きれいにする (kirei ni suru).
Just add にする (ni suru).
きれいにする
(kirei ni suru)
Or next one: [Object] を (o), い (i)-adjective minus い (i), plus くする (ku suru).
So if it's an い (i)-adjective, you remove い (i) from the adjective, and then add くする (ku suru).
For example, 安い (yasui), remove い (i), and attach くする (ku suru), 安くする (yasuku suru).
安くする
(yasuku suru)
Meaning to make cheaper.
安い
(yasui)
Cheap.
安くする
(yasuku suru)
To make cheaper.
All right?
Vocabulary memorization: Doing chores.
Asking to perform a task.
So here, キッチンを掃除して (kitchin o sōji shite).
Clean the kitchen.
You can use this pattern, して (shite).
Oops.
When you want to ask someone casually to do something.
For example, you wanna ask someone to do the laundry.
How do you say it?
Just remove this part, blue highlighted part, and you say, 洗濯して (sentaku shite).
Do the laundry.
If you want to sound more polite, you say, 洗濯してください (sentaku shite kudasai).
Or 洗濯してくれる (sentaku shite kureru)?
There's different ways of saying it, but 洗濯してください (sentaku shite kudasai).
How about you want to ask someone to do, hmm, 料理 (ryōri).
Cooking.
料理して
(Ryōri shite)
Do the cooking, かな (kana)?
料理して
(Ryōri shite)
Be careful again, because this may sound a little bit, how do you say, um, bit like a command.
So you can use for your children or someone close to you, but, you know, might sound a bit strong depending on how you say it.
Okay, so next one, ゴミ出し (gomidashi).
It's important, right?
Take out the trash, and you want to ask someone to do ゴミ出し (gomidashi).
How do you say this?
ゴミ出しして
(Gomidashi shite)
Do ゴミ出し (gomidashi).
Take out the trash.
Okay?
So ゴミ出しして (gomidashi shite).
Okay.
And here are three examples, casual as it is.
キッチンを掃除して。
Clean the kitchen.
So yeah, キッチンを掃除してください (Kitchin o sōji shite kudasai) is a bit polite, as I mentioned, right?
キッチンを掃除してください。
(Kitchin o sōji shite kudasai.)
Please clean the kitchen.
And if you want to sound more polite, you can say, キッチンの掃除をお願いします (Kitchin no sōji o onegai shimasu).
I would like to request the cleaning of the kitchen, please.
So it's a bit more polite than キッチンを掃除してください (Kitchin o sōji shite kudasai).
So here, I'm just going to add, if you want to ask someone close to you, you wanna ask キッチンを掃除して (Kitchin o sōji shite), you can say as it is, but you can also say, キッチンを掃除してくれる?
キッチンを掃除してね。
Bit soften the sentence, I recommend you to.
Okay, next.
Grammar Understanding, な (na)- and い (i)-adjectives.
皿洗いとカウンターをきれいにする。
皿洗いとカウンターをきれいにする。
Make the plates and countertop clean.
(Saraarai to kauntā o kirei ni suru.)
So as I mentioned, this is にする (ni suru), to change the state, right?
Changing of state using な (na)-adjective in this case because きれい (kirei) is な (na)-adjective.
きれい plus にする, きれいにする。
How about い (i)-adjectives?
Let's review.
So い (i)-adjectives, true adjectives.
These adjectives inherently end in the hiragana character い (i).
Right out of the dictionary.
They can modify nouns directly, and they change their endings to show tense or state changes.
So how to use?
Base form.
Let's have a look with this 安い (yasui).
Base form, cheap, 安い (yasui), meaning cheap.
And modify nouns, so for example, you wanna say, "This bread is cheap."
"Cheap bread."
How do you say?
安いパン
(yasui pan)
Just together.
Put it directly in front of the noun.
安いカバン
(yasui kaban)
Cheap bag.
How about when you want to changing states?
安い (yasui), cheap, and you want to say to make cheap.
安くする
(yasuku suru)
Drop the final い (i) and add くする (ku suru).
安くする
(yasuku suru)
Other example, quite useful i-adjective, for example, ボーノボーノ、おいしい。
So base form is お (o)-い (i)-し (shi)-い (i), and this is also an i-adjective, right?
And modify nouns, how about you wanna say, "Tasty bread"?
Okay, so remember, put it directly in front of the noun.
So noun here is パン (pan), bread.
おいしいパン。
(Oishii pan.)
おいしいパン
(Oishii pan)
Delicious bread.
Tasty bread.
How about changing states?
Maybe the bread wasn't so good and you want to make it into tasty bread.
How do you say that in Japanese?
おいしい
(Oishii)
So remove い (i), drop the final い (i), and add くする (ku suru).
おいしくする。
(Oishiku suru.)
おいしくする
(Oishiku suru)
To make it tasty, to make it delicious.
Clear?
Okay, so exceptions.
A few words end in the sound い (i) but are actually な (na)-adjectives.
So it might be confusing if you don't know what's な (na)-adjective and い (i)-adjective.
You can check the JapanesePod101 site.
Right, there's more explanation there.
Okay, so some examples include きれい (kirei) or 有名 (yūmei).
Both of these adjectives end with the い (i), right?
But these are actually na-adjectives.
I know it's confusing, but yes, you get used to it.
So na-adjectives, adjectival nouns.
These adjectives do not naturally end in い (i).
What does it mean?
In fact, they behave a lot like nouns.
They only get the syllable な (na).
That's why it's called na-adjective.
When they are placed directly before a noun to describe it.
So let's have a look at the example.
Base form, きれい (kirei).
きれい
(kirei)
Clean.
So when you modify nouns with this adjective, it becomes not きれい部屋 (kirei heya) or きれ部屋 (kire heya).
It turns into きれいな部屋 (kirei na heya).
So insert な (na) between the adjective and the noun, きれいな部屋 (kirei na heya).
And when you want to changing state きれい (kirei), you want to make it clean, how do you say?
きれいにする
(kirei ni suru)
So in this case, add にする (ni suru) directly to the base word.
So when you modify nouns, it might become confusing, but just adding な (na).
Okay?
So other example, let's say, um, na-adjective.
静か
(shizuka)
静かな
(shizuka na)
How about that?
静か
(shizuka)
Okay?
静か (shizuka) meaning quiet.
Modify noun.
I want to say a quiet room.
It's like a movie's title, but how do you say that?
So insert な (na) between the adjective and the noun.
So this 静か (shizuka) is the adjective and noun is 部屋 (heya).
So you say 静かな部屋 (shizuka na heya).
静かな部屋
(shizuka na heya)
Quiet room.
How about changing states?
So 静か (shizuka), and you want to change the state into quiet, quiet state, like quiet, make it quiet.
So 静か (shizuka), and just add にする (ni suru) directly.
So 静かにする (shizuka ni suru).
静かにする。
(Shizuka ni suru.)
To make it quiet.
Okay?
Side by Side Translation.
Having ruined their dinner plans, the sisters decided to eat out at a nearby restaurant.
Before that, they planned to first clean up the mess in the kitchen.
Anna keeps getting distracted while cleaning, and this continues to test Nana's patience, as usual.
Okay, so もう一度 (mō ichido), I'm going to read that line by line with English translation.
Let's go.
First, はあ、じゃあ…
(Hā, jā...)
じゃあさっさと掃除して外に食べに行くか。
Guess we will clean this quick and go out for dinner...

(Ato wa koko dake.)
Now we just need to clean...

(Hai, Nana, hitotsu dōzo!)
Here, Nana, have one!
なんで今チョコレートを食べてるの?
Why are you eating chocolate now?

Isn't that supposed to be your dessert?
お腹すいた〜
(Onaka suita~)
But I am hungry~
だから早く掃除してご飯の前に食べるのやめて。
Then focus on cleaning and stop snacking before a meal!
あ、そうだ、

We can't use this now.
じゃあ、新しいの買える。
That means we can buy a new one.
もしもし。
(Moshimoshi.)
Hello.

I am the resident here. Our toaster just got damaged.
修理していただけますか?
Is it possible to get it repaired?
デデデンデデデンデデデン。
よし、掃除はこれで終わり。
Okay, cleaning is done for now.
ナナ、お腹ペコペコ。
Nana, I am starving.
ふむ、
(Fumu,)
近くのラーメン屋に行こう。
洗濯は後でいい。
(Sentaku wa ato de ii.)
Let's go to the ramen store nearby.
We can leave the laundry for later.
えー
(Ē)
ステーキがよかった。
(Sutēki ga yokatta.)
Oh, I was hoping for steak.
無駄遣いしなくなったら考えてあげる。
We can consider that when you learn not to spend impulsively.
もう、わかった。
(Mō, wakatta.)
Geez, fine.
まずトイレ!
(Mazu toire!)
I'm going to the bathroom first.
ハクション!
(Hakushon!)
掃除中のほこりのせいかな。
Must have been all the dust while cleaning.
Wonderful.
Now that the learning is over with, let's practice.
I'll show you how to do the first few questions on the practice pages, then it's up to you to finish them on your own.
I know you can do it.
Reading.
Answer the questions below based on the story you just read.
Okay, so first, question A.
Why does Nana insist they clean the kitchen before dinner?
Do you remember what they said?
What she said?
A.
She wants to punish Anna for messing up.
B.
She wishes to clean the stains before they set.
C.
She wants to eat in a clean kitchen.
D.
She believes the cleaning won't take too long.
Do you remember which one it was?
She said something like, "Don't wanna come back in a messy kitchen, messy room."
So that's answer B.
She wishes to clean the stains before they set.
So she didn't explicitly say that, but that's probably the reason why she didn't wanna leave before cleaning.
Okay, so there are more B, C, D.
I know you can do it.
Vocabulary.
Your task is to translate and then to find and circle the vocabulary words hidden in the grid.
Okay, so first I need to translate.
A.
そうじ
(sōji)
そうじ
(sōji)
Cleaning.
Or to clean.
Oh, okay.
And so now I need to find this word in here, this pool of characters.
Okay, so...
ちら
(chira)
Okay, here.
(so)
(u)
う、じ
(u, ji)
掃除
(sōji)
This one is a little more flexible than normal ones.
Usually it goes this way, but it can go this way too.
So, you know, be aware for that.
So next one we have 整理 (seiri), meaning to organize.
Organizing.
Organizing.
To organize.
So where is this?
Again, it's here.
たん、たん、たん
(tan, tan, tan)
(gyaku)
整理
(seiri)
So like this, you can finish up to J.
Grammar.
Look at the pictures.
Imagine you are talking to Nana and Anna.
Write the verbs in the て (te) form.
So here, imagine you're asking Anna and Nana to do something, a little bit like a teacher asking them to do something, or parents.
First, you wanna ask to Nana.
掃除
(sōji)
How do you ask her to do 掃除 (sōji)?
Remember, て (te) form of the verb する (suru).
掃除する
(sōji suru)
掃除して
(sōji shite)
So, Nana, 掃除して (sōji shite).
Nana, clean.
Clean up.
So something like this, this time with Anna.
You want to ask her to be quiet.
静か
(shizuka)
OK?
静か
(shizuka)
アンナ、図書館では静かにして。
(Anna, toshokan de wa shizuka ni shite.)
静かにして。
(Shizuka ni shite.)
アンナ、図書館では静かにして。
(Anna, toshokan de wa shizuka ni shite.)
Anna, please be quiet in the library.
So like this, you can do B to F and H to L.
I know you can do it.
Writing.
Imagine Nana is trying to get Anna to help clean the kitchen while describing her own tasks.
Use the words in the word bank to delegate task.
So here in this case, she want to ask Anna to do kitchen.
キッチン
(kitchin)
Next is を (o).
キッチンを
(kitchin o)
Blah, blah, blah, blah.
Can you make the sentence asking Anna to clean the kitchen?
And then while describing her own tasks.
So Nana said, 私 (watashi).
私は
(watashi wa)
What am I going to do?
What is she going to do?
Blah, blah, blah, blah.
So complete these two sentences.
キッチンを掃除して。
私は皿洗いとカウンターをきれいにします。
キッチンをきれいにして。
私は皿洗いとカウンターをきれいにします。
Next issue, ordering food.
アンナさんとナナさん、掃除が終わって外にご飯を食べに行く様子ですね、こちらは。
またどんなアドベンチャーを見せてくれるんでしょうか。
お楽しみに。
(Otanoshimi ni.)
バイバイ。
(Baibai.)
I hope you enjoyed Anna and Nana doing chores, well, cleaning up after the cooking disaster.
There is more to come, so keep an eye out so you can master more everyday life situations in Japanese.
Don't forget to go over the practice pages to test your understanding of the lesson.
And I will see you in the next video.
Bye.
