| In this lesson, you’ll learn conversational phrases to answer the question, "What are you doing?" After watching this video, you’ll be able to answer this question and tell someone something about what you’re writing. |
| Now, let’s take a look at some conversational phrases! |
| Listen to the dialogue. |
| なにをしているんですか。 (Nani o shite iru n desu ka.) |
| にっきをかいています。 (Nikki o kaite imasu.) |
| Once more with the English translation. |
| なにをしているんですか。 (Nani o shite iru n desu ka.) |
| “What are you doing?” |
| にっきをかいています。 (Nikki o kaite imasu.) |
| “I'm writing my journal.” |
| First of all you'll need to learn how to say “What are you doing?” |
| That's: |
| なにをしているんですか。 (Nani o shite iru n desu ka.) |
| Listen to it again: |
| なにをしているんですか。, なにをしているんですか。 (Nani o shite iru n desu ka., Nani o shite iru n desu ka.) |
| This Japanese sentence literally translates as “What doing is it?” |
| But it means "What are you doing?" |
| Now, how do you answer this question? |
| The pattern is: |
| [object]をかいています。 ([object] o kaite imasu.) |
| This Japanese sentence translates as "[object] writing I am." |
| But it means "I'm writing [object]." |
| For example: |
| “I'm writing my journal.” |
| にっきをかいています。, にっきをかいています。 (Nikki o kaite imasu., Nikki o kaite imasu.) |
